Patrick Cantlay rolls back the clock as familiar surroundings put team game specialist on course to be American hero

Ultimate team competitor scrapping to make Bethpage team in September Patrick Cantlay is rolling the clock back 14 long years to serve notice that he can again be the ultimate Ryder Cup superhero for the United States at Bethpage. The American star's failure to elevate himself to the next level in recent times has been a constant topic amongst golf fans. ‌ At one stage, Cantlay was No.3 in the world and it was assumed that Majors and titles would flow, but it has not panned out in such smooth fashion. ‌ Now aged 33, he is down to World No.20 and hasn't won a tournament on the PGA for almost three years since a success at the BMW Championship. However, during the individual win drought, Cantlay has managed to reserve some of his best stuff for the team events. In 2023, he was the one who stood tallest for the States as they were being hammered by Europe in Rome. Amid the controversy of his non-hat wearing and relentless stick from the home-team supporters in Italy, he was the one who instigated the mini-fightback for Zach Johnson's men with his brilliant display on Saturday which ended with Rory McIlroy having an argument in the car park. Cantlay didn't perform to his own levels again in 2024, yet once more, he had plenty in the tank for the team games and produced a special moment in the Presidents Cup when he holed a stunning putt in darkness on the 18th to win his match against Internationals Si-woo Kim and Tom Kim. Go back to his outings in the 2019 and 2022 Presidents Cups and also the American routing of Europe at Whistling Straits in 2021, where he didn't lose a game, and it's a record in team events which Bradley knows all about, just as he's aware of the fearsome partnership he's built with Open champ Xander Schauffele. Yet, rated as one of the best players never to have won a Major, his record in the big ones this season is poor with missed cuts at both the PGA Championship and the US Open and this could leave a big dilemma for captain Keegan Bradley. ‌ Currently 13th in the points list for the States, Cantlay is going to need a pick from his skipper for New York unless he suddenly hits the booster button with form. Logic says his past record would suggest he would get one and be deserving of it, but nothing is a gimme with so many hungry talents snapping at his heels. Cantlay needs results and, having come fourth in the Truist and tied-12th at The Memorial in the past few weeks, he looks on course for another important finish up the standings in Connecticut after two good days at the Travelers Championship. It is, of course, a special place for Cantlay. It's where it all began. At the 2011 Travelers Championship, he made PGA history as a 19-year-old. Two weeks after taking his final exams, he played his first Tour event at the US Open and was best amateur at Congressional before that terrific work carried straight into TPC River Highlands. Cantlay fired a second-round 10-under 60, the lowest round ever by an amateur on Tour, to announce himself onto the big stage. Opening rounds of 67 and 68 are not quite the incredible numbers of 14 years ago, but the comfort levels seem similar and needs to keep producing more of the same to attract Bradley's attention with a host of young guns hunting places for the clash against Luke Donald's team. Cantlay feels right at home at Travelers and, after his second round, he said: 'It's so great to see this tournament evolve over the years. It's become one of the best on tour and I know, speaking for a lot of the guys, we really look forward to coming this week. It doesn't feel like 14 years ago that I played my first one, but it's been real cool to see how much better the golf tournament's got each and every year.'

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler first to earn spot on Team USA for 2025 Ryder Cup

Fresh off a dominant win at the 2025 Memorial Tournament, Scottie Scheffler has yet another achievement to celebrate. Scheffler, who defended his title at Muirfield last week, secured his spot on the U.S. team for the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage this fall. Winner of three of his last four starts, Scheffler has already accrued enough points to lock in his bid as an automatic qualifier for Team USA. Advertisement This will be Scheffler's third time donning the red, white and blue since making his debut at Whistling Straits in 2021. 'Representing the United States at the Ryder Cup has been one of the greatest honors of my career, and I look forward to doing so for a third time this September,' said Scheffler on the Ryder Cup's official website. 'I will do whatever it takes to help our team reclaim the Cup and cannot wait to play in front of the passionate New York spectators at Bethpage Black.' Scheffler, ranked No. 1 in the world, will be joined by five other automatic qualifiers, plus six players selected by Team USA captain Keegan Bradley. As of June 4, the other automatic qualifiers are Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Russell Henley. LIV Golf star famous for his temper tantrums spots his own weakness amid push to win US Open

English star bang in the mix as he hunts Major and Ryder Cup success Fired-up Tyrrell Hatton will keep having head-off moments as he chases a stunning double at Oakmont. The English star is in the mix for a first-ever Major title at the US Open having put together three excellent opening rounds to sit just five behind leader Sam Burns. ‌ Fiery Hatton is known to lose his cool, but the torturous lay-off in Pennsylvania is leading to rivals also having temper tantrums. That suits the 33-year-old perfectly as he smiled: 'I have a 'head off' wherever I play, so everyone comes to the US Open and seems to have a 'head off' and I guess it brings them to my level for a week. I am not going to change.' ‌ Success for Hatton will signify a huge breakthrough his career and also secure his cherished place in The Ryder Cup team for Bethpage. He was a stalwart for Luke Donald alongside Jon Rahm in the Rome win over United States and, despite LIV status, looks set for New York in September. Oakmont triumph would seal the deal and he said: 'I knew at the start of the year and certainly last year when I signed with LIV that the majors were going to be very important for me. But yeah, I'd love to finish off a strong week for World Ranking points, Ryder Cup points, Race to Dubai points. There's a lot to play for. At the end of the day, I just have to go out there and try my best and I can't really worry about that. I just have to focus on one shot at a time and that's what I'll try and do. 'I'm sure if you've won majors in the past, you know that you can get over the line in a major, but still, at the end of the day, it's another golf tournament and for the most part you're playing against a lot of the guys week in, week out. On your day you have to trust that you can compete and beat anyone and have that self-belief, which I think everyone in the field this week will have that. You just go out there and try your best and see where you end up.' Hatton has dealt with the punishing track superbly, but it has still gotten under his skin at times as he said: 'I don't see the need to have so much rough in the side slopes of the bunkers. The bunkers, the faces on them are so severe, if you go in them off the tee, you're not really reaching the green for the most part. Certainly around the green, if you go in the bunker and you're short-sided anyway, they've done a hell of a job raking them this week because they're so flat and almost certainly you feel like you're on a bit of a downslope, so they're still hard to play out of. You're really struggling to hit a bunker shot close anyway. 'But that's how they've set it up this year and it doesn't matter if I don't agree with it or every player in the field doesn't agree with it. Everyone has to deal with it. It's just how it is. I've struggled this year really off the tee since the LIV season started, to be honest. I had a great week at Desert Classic, but since then I feel like I've struggled and that's been one thing that's probably held me back from finishing higher up in the tournaments I've played so far.

Keegan Bradley faces Ryder Cup dilemma as US Team Captain's form causes awkward situation

United States skipper in form to be a player and not a captain Captain Keegan Bradley is making life tricky for himself and ex-Ryder Cup star Brad Faxon says he's perfect to play at Bethpage. The 38-year-old was selected to be skipper in September as the United States aim to rip back the trophy they lost to Europe in Rome. ‌ However, Bradley's form on the course continues to push him towards the awkward situation of being a potential member of the 12-man team. ‌ The 38-year-old is producing another top-class showing at The Memorial and sits in a tie for fourth heading into the final round. Bradley has veterans Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker as assistants available to step up to the captain's role and, although he says he won't pick himself, Faxon, who played in 1995 and 1997, says he has to be a contender if he keeps up current form. Rory McIlroy 's putting coach said: 'I've always thought this Keegan Bradley story is remarkable, 38 years old, the youngest captain since Arnold [Palmer] back in 1963. And, you know, he got that call from Seth Waugh last year to be the captain and it surprised him. ‌ 'He always says, look, I'm only going to play if I finish in the top six. Well, if he made it into the top 12, he would be picked by any other captain, certainly. "And if Seth had called him not to tell him, hey you're going to be the Ryder Cup captain, if he said, look, would you rather be captain or rather play at Bethpage, he'd say, play all day, wouldn't he? ‌ 'So I think Keegan needs to be like: I could be a big part of this team. And Keegan's a guy that he's versatile, he can play either format because he's such a good hitter of the ball. And he can play with any other player. 'There are certain times when you make a pick where that particular player is only good in one format, or only is good with one or two other players. "I think Captain Bradley would be a great player and you could easily say to any of those assistant captains, you can be the captain, let me play. And the PGA America would surely give him that spot.' Bradley is delighted with his work at Muirfield Village and said: 'I feel like I got myself back in the tournament. Proud of the way I played.' Faxon believes Bradley is going to face a tough job at Bethpage whether he is captain or playing due to the strength of Luke Donald' s European side. Speaking on the Smylie Show, he said: 'How does the LIV golfers, how do they be part of the team? You think about Jon Rahm, Tyrell Hatton adding to the European team, the firepower that they have and I think they'll be the deeper of the teams, it looks like.'

Sergio Garcia sees Ryder Cup hopes hang by a thread after US Open misery

Spaniard is facing a race against form and time to make Bethpage Suffering Sergio Garcia' s Ryder Cup hopes are dangling by an even-thinner thread after his US Open failure. Europe's record points scorer is desperate to get to Bethpage in September for an 11th crack at the United States. But his latest letdown and inability to make it through to next month's US Open at Oakmont is another hugely damaging blow following his PGA Championship frustration. ‌ The former Masters champ missed the cut at Augusta in April before admitting moments after final round at Quail Hollow that he wouldn't accept a pick from captain Luke Donald if offered right now due to his poor form. Garcia immediately headed for Dallas to join 85 rivals competing to grab one of seven qualifying spots available from the 36-hole event at Bent Tree Country Club. ‌ Despite a strong first-round of 65, his second effort of 71 saw the LIV Golf ace miss out by a shot. That will see a run of 25 consecutive appearances at the tournament ended and now leave his last shot at a Major this term resting on making it through qualifiers for The Open at Royal Portrush. Although Garcia will head to Europe between LIV events to play DP World Tour events, Major performances are going to be key with skipper Luke Donald admitting last week in the build-up to the PGA that he and his staff would be looking closely at the big-four events in terms of picking their side. While talking about various aspects of how the team would be selected for Bethpage from those who do not make the automatic qualifiers, Donald said a number of factors would be taken into consideration and performance in Majors would be a vital component of the process. He said: 'We do have pretty in-depth data, even on the guys on LIV. So we can track, we know exactly how they're playing. "Then obviously the majors are important. I think that's the time when everyone gets together and on good golf courses, you have stacked fields. "And just to see how they're playing in those is another point that we take into consideration quite a lot.'
