Keegan Bradley faces Ryder Cup dilemma as US Team Captain's form causes awkward situation
United States skipper in form to be a player and not a captain
Captain Keegan Bradley is making life tricky for himself and ex-Ryder Cup star Brad Faxon says he's perfect to play at Bethpage.
The 38-year-old was selected to be skipper in September as the United States aim to rip back the trophy they lost to Europe in Rome.
However, Bradley's form on the course continues to push him towards the awkward situation of being a potential member of the 12-man team.
The 38-year-old is producing another top-class showing at The Memorial and sits in a tie for fourth heading into the final round.
Bradley has veterans Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker as assistants available to step up to the captain's role and, although he says he won't pick himself, Faxon, who played in 1995 and 1997, says he has to be a contender if he keeps up current form.
Rory McIlroy 's putting coach said: 'I've always thought this Keegan Bradley story is remarkable, 38 years old, the youngest captain since Arnold [Palmer] back in 1963. And, you know, he got that call from Seth Waugh last year to be the captain and it surprised him.
'He always says, look, I'm only going to play if I finish in the top six. Well, if he made it into the top 12, he would be picked by any other captain, certainly.
"And if Seth had called him not to tell him, hey you're going to be the Ryder Cup captain, if he said, look, would you rather be captain or rather play at Bethpage, he'd say, play all day, wouldn't he?
'So I think Keegan needs to be like: I could be a big part of this team. And Keegan's a guy that he's versatile, he can play either format because he's such a good hitter of the ball. And he can play with any other player.
'There are certain times when you make a pick where that particular player is only good in one format, or only is good with one or two other players.
"I think Captain Bradley would be a great player and you could easily say to any of those assistant captains, you can be the captain, let me play. And the PGA America would surely give him that spot.'
Bradley is delighted with his work at Muirfield Village and said: 'I feel like I got myself back in the tournament. Proud of the way I played.'
Faxon believes Bradley is going to face a tough job at Bethpage whether he is captain or playing due to the strength of Luke Donald' s European side.
Speaking on the Smylie Show, he said: 'How does the LIV golfers, how do they be part of the team? You think about Jon Rahm, Tyrell Hatton adding to the European team, the firepower that they have and I think they'll be the deeper of the teams, it looks like.'

Thomas Frank labelled 'too soft' despite brutally quitting old job over chairman
Former Denmark international defender Martin Albrechtsen played under Thomas Frank at Brondby and has now shed light on his compatriot's first ever managerial role at club level following his appointment at Tottenham Tottenham's players are going to have a ball in pre-season - once they've navigated Thomas Frank's 1km time trial. He explained: "I've had a taste of both worlds, the totally crazy pre-season regimes and also managers that think differently. "With Thomas, his coaches and physios organise the sessions but he's mindful of the bigger picture, it's not just about running 20km, there was a clear plan and he knew how to schedule things. "He thought about recovery and that if we're training tomorrow, we don't want injuries. His mindset was not about short-term gain and smashing people to their absolute limit, it was more about improving our conditioning and sharpness." Former Denmark international Albrechtsen, who retired last summer, spent four years at The Hawthorns between 2004 and 2008 and his recollections of pre-season still haunt him to this very day. The 45-year-old continued: "Life under Gary Megson was a bit special. We had this coach that would make us run in this park in Sutton Coldfield, it was the hardest thing I've ever done in my career. I lost around 5kg, I wasn't very big back then anyway so it was a real culture shock. "I don't know any player that would enjoy running in a forest for two hours non-stop, they thought we were in good shape but we were not ready to play football because our bodies were so fatigued. Thomas likes to involve the ball a lot, there were still interval runs but you were getting a feel for the ball which goes a long way." Daniel Levy recently declared Frank's ability to develop young talent speaks for itself. But now, he'll also be dealing with big-name characters at Spurs and Albrechtsen recalls he was notably "soft" throughout his time at Brondby. He continued: "I think he was maybe just a bit too soft. We were a group of older players that were used to a harder, tougher mentality so we were missing that direct, rougher managerial approach at times. That said, it was around 10 years ago now and I'd expect he's changed given his success." Ange Postecoglou was unable to appease Levy despite ending Spurs' 17-year wait for silverware and if you thought the circumstances surrounding the Aussie's exit were bizarre, Frank can go one better. He resigned as Brondby boss in 2016 after it emerged the club's chairman, Jan Bech Andersen, had been scrutinising Frank via an anonymous profile on a fans' forum site. Albrechtsen revealed: "Yes, it's true. It was a tough few years with financial struggles and we were nearly relegated so we were used to noise and stories, in a way, it just felt like another day at the office! "Still, it was really strange but perhaps it was a good thing because we weren't performing well and if we carried on, Thomas may have been sacked."

Brighton and Forest locked in Cuiabano transfer battle after three rejected bids
Brighton and Nottingham Forest are going head-to-head for Botafogo left-back Cuiabano, who is currently away at the Club World Cup Brighton are refusing to give up on the signing of Botafogo left-back Cuiabano - despite seeing three bids rejected for the 22-year-old Brazilian. Nottingham Forest have also attempted to sign Cuiabano and their interest in the player remains strong. The Tricky Trees have already agreed a £30million package deal with Botafogo for striker Igor Jesus and centre-back Jair Cunha, who will both move to the City Ground following their participation in the Club World Cup. However, so far, they've been unable to strike an agreement for Cuiabano and the race for his signature remains open. Brighton's latest offer was worth in the region of £7.7m including add-ons but it was still not enough to satisfy Botafogo's valuation. The defender has been used from the bench in both of Botafogo's Club World Cup fixtures including the impressive 1-0 scalp over European Champions PSG. Brighton are exploring the signing of a new left-back despite handing Tariq Lamptey a new contract as Pervis Estupinan has told the Seagulls that he's open to a new challenge. Estupinan told El Canal Del Futbol while away on international duty: 'The truth is they have been three years in Brighton with a lot of learning. But this will be a transfer market with a lot of movement. The club know that I would like to grow, that I would like to keep growing. 'The club have understood this. I've spoken to the club. The club have given me this bit of freedom to be able to make a decision. Now we will try to see better what is on the table and to see where we can go." Meanwhile, Forest boss Nuno Espírito Santo has signed a new three-year Nottingham Forest contract until the summer of 2028. The Portuguese boss guided the Tricky Trees to their highest league finish in 30 years to qualify for the UEFA Conference League. Next season will be the first time the City Ground has staged European football since the 1995-96 campaign. Nuno replaced previous boss Steve Cooper in December 2023 and later guided Forest to survival on the final day of the season before securing a seventh-place finish. Forest also reached the FA Cup semi-finals this term. The 51-year-old said upon penning his new deal: "I am delighted to be able to continue our journey at this fantastic football club. "Since we arrived at Forest, we have worked extremely hard to create a special bond between the players, the fans and everyone at the club, which helped us achieve great things last season."
