Calls Mount for Umpire's Firing During Padres-Dodgers Game
Calls Mount for Umpire's Firing During Padres-Dodgers Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers entered Thursday night looking to complete a three-game sweep of the San Diego Padres. This National League West rivalry has been among the best in MLB the last several seasons, with exciting regular season games and playoff series being played between these two teams. Advertisement Los Angeles turned to right-handed starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto for the series finale. Entering the night 6-5 with a 2.64 ERA, Yamamoto has been among the elite starters in the National League this season. One strike away from an immaculate inning in the third, Yamamoto was robbed by home plate umpire Marvin Hudson who missed an obvious strike three call. An immaculate inning is when a pitcher strikes out the side on nine pitches. It has only happened 118 times in MLB history, with the most recent being Miami Marlins starter Cal Quantrill earlier this season (via Yahoo Sports). With Yamamoto being robbed of a historic moment, fans immediately began calling for the Hudson's firing. Advertisement "ban this ump dude what a trash call," said one. "Should be fired between innings," one added. "Roboumps immediately, that is horrendous," claimed another. "Fire him immediately, glove was set up there too. What a joke," one wrote. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto (18)Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn Images These calls have continued pouring in from baseball fans on social media. "Thats so [expletive] ridiculous. Ump should lose his job," one wrote. "@MLB this ump needs to be suspended for a game for this horrific call," another said. "Get rid of umps they ruin baseball," said another. "Not a single person has more job security than these mediocre umpires," one claimed. Shocking moment MLB star swings at fan in heated exchange during game
A heated exchange between Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dennis Santana and a fan turned violent when the reliever shockingly launched himself at the stands. With the 29-46 Pirates bottom of the National League Central, tensions appear to be taking their toll - both in the stands and the clubhouse. And during the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers, the frustrations boiled over for Santana as he lost his head. With the game heading into a rain delay, the 29-year-old was caught in a furious back-and-forth with a fan from the bullpen. But the exchange escalated to a shocking level when Santana launched himself upwards and swung his fist at the side of the spectator's face. In videos posted to social media, Santana appeared to fail to make contact and the fan quickly stepped back from the wall as the security guard accompanying the pitcher swiftly intervened. Pirates reliever Dennis Santana took a swing at a fan while in the bullpen at Comerica Park in Detroit. #MLB (via @_shadky) — The Comeback (@thecomeback) June 20, 2025 A member of the Pirates' bullpen staff could then by seen pulling Santana away before a teammate ushered him into the clubhouse to cool down. The fan appeared to be wearing a Tigers hat and a shirt honoring Pirates Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente. The Pirates have yet to address the incident but the Tigers confirmed that the fan had been ejected from Comerica Park, per The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen. The pirates had lost the opening game of the doubleheader 9–2. The second game was tied at 4-4 before heading into a rain delay in the ninth inning but Pittsburgh managed to clinch an 8-4 10th-inning win once play resumed. Santana is enjoying one of his best seasons on the mound, recording a 1.74 ERA heading into Thursday with 25 strikeouts. The journeyman is in his eighth season in the major leagues and his second with the Pirates after stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers, New York Mets, and New York Yankees. MLB will likely investigate the incident. In 2023, Angels' Anthony Rendon was punished after he grabbed an Athletics fan pestering him. He received a five-game suspension, cut to four, and paid an undisclosed fine for the incident. It isn't the only incident to have rocked the Pirates this season. In May, a Pittsburgh Pirates employee was caught in a shocking violent altercation with a fan at PNC Park. In April, a Pirates fan fell 21ft from a stadium wall and suffered serious injuries The staff member hurled punches and even attempted to whip the fan with a belt after their heated exchange of words came to blows. The game day employee was suspended by the MLB team following the wild scenes. That altercation came just one week after Pirates fan Kavan Markwood slipped off a railing and fell from a 21-foot wall onto the field during the seventh inning of Pittsburgh's win over the Chicago Cubs. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition after the horrific plunge, which left him with a broken neck, back and collarbone. Around a week after Markwood's fall, doctors revealed he had made 'really remarkable progress'. His friend, Evan Kirkwood, was arrested for buying Markwood just two beers - because he's underage. Kirkwood, 21, told police investigating the incident that he bought friend Kavan Markwood, 20, the beers during the game against the Chicago Cubs on April 30. Pirates icon McCutchen could be seen with his head in his hands in the immediate aftermath of the incident, while Pittsburgh owner Bob Nutting released a heartfelt statement, saying 'we are all deeply saddened and truly heartbroken'.

Former Red Sox Star Xander Bogaerts Faces Backlash Amid Struggles
Former Red Sox Star Xander Bogaerts Faces Backlash Amid Struggles originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox may have dodged a bullet by not signing Xander Bogaerts to an extension after the 2022 season. The current San Diego Padres' shortstop now has fans calling for his demotion after a brutal start to this season. Advertisement San Diego signed Bogaerts to a deal worth $280 million over 11 years, and the contract has looked increasingly worse as time has gone on. He was expected to be continue as one of the best shortstops in the baseball, but his play has gradually declined in every major category since he joined the team. Bogaerts has hit just .227 this season, with mediocre OPS of just .615 and a WAR of 0.3. It is by far the former Red Sox superstar's worst season since his first full year as an MLB starter. One popular podcast of Padres fans posted this on X, "Losing words to describe Xander Bogaerts. Legit DFA candidate and he's got 8.5 years left," said Devine Sports Gospel. Plenty of other San Diego fans have also been getting on the bandwagon of frustration with Bogaerts, which has become a popular topic of late. Advertisement This is a fall from grace for Bogaerts, who played very well in his first year with the Padres back in 2023. That season he had a .285 batting average with 19 homers and a solid .790 OPS. It was arguably his worst season since 2017, but still a very good year for most hitters. There was a drop-off last season, where Bogaerts slashed a .264 average, .307 on base percentage, and .381 slugging percentage. San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts (2) between innings against the Atlanta Braves in the first inning at Truist Davis-Imagn Images The fall off since 2022 and even 2023 has become jarring, but there is still some hope in store for Padres fans. Bogaerts has walked 29 times to date and is on pace for this season to be his second most career walks, while he has struck out just 50 times across 71 games. Advertisement That means the 32-year-old is having a strong approach at the plate, even if the hits are not coming. It does not mean he will return to his 2022 form with the Red Sox, a .307 AVG with an .833 OPS, but there may still be hope for results closer to 2023 or 2024. Bogaerts is now a possible trade candidate, but with a contract that big the Padres may just have to wait it out. Yankees fans find joy after sweep thanks to Stanton activation and Devers trade
Yankees fans find joy after sweep thanks to Stanton activation and Devers trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's been a rough few days for Yankees fans. The weekend sweep in Boston was historic—in the worst kind of way. But Monday night brought something resembling momentum. Advertisement The Yankees activated Giancarlo Stanton ahead of their opener against the Angels, and the fanbase did what it does best: overreact in all directions, at full volume. 'THIS PAST 24 HOURS GETS BETTER AND BETTER,' one fan posted on Twitter, still buzzing from Sunday night's twist, when Rafael Devers—fresh off yet another home run against the Yankees—was traded to the Giants. That news had already sent fans into cautious celebration. Add Stanton back to the lineup? 'FINALLYYYY,' wrote one user. 'Thank God," tweeted another. 'Yankee games just feel different when he's in the lineup,' another said. 'Man we needed this!' Yankees slugger Giancarlo Carchietta-Imagn Images Stanton hasn't played all season after being shut down in spring with elbow issues. But when he's healthy, and that's always the caveat, he changes the shape of the Yankees' lineup. Especially with the offense as flat as it's been lately. Advertisement Still, the cautious optimism was mixed with familiar, sarcastic PTSD. 'Please Stanton, please don't pull your oblique running or something random. Just hit dingers.' 'And a month of 'he had no spring training' after each strikeout and DP,' one fan quipped. Another chimed in: '...and then tomorrow get the day off.' Even Aaron Boone's most loyal defenders probably read that one twice. But for the moment, it was a win. A 24-hour mood swing that started with misery in Fenway and ended with Devers in San Francisco and Stanton in the on-deck circle. 'We are saved!' one fan posted. Let's revisit that on Thursday morning. But for one night? Hope's back in the Bronx. Pete Crow-Armstrong hints he's out on HR Derby: ‘That's not for me'
CHICAGO — Pete Crow-Armstrong's breakout season makes the Chicago Cubs center fielder an obvious selection for Major League Baseball's All-Star Game. More than 1 million fans have already voted for 'PCA' to be a National League starter. But if asked by organizers for the marquee event, he signaled he would not be interested in participating in the Home Run Derby. 'That's not for me,' Crow-Armstrong said before launching his 19th home run during Tuesday night's 5-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. 'That's a different kind of power.' SAY IT WITH US, MVPETE. — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) June 18, 2025 Yet another highlight-reel moment did not change Crow-Armstrong's mind. He feeds off the energy at the Friendly Confines, where the crowd of 38,687 chanted 'P-C-A!' and 'M-V-P!' after his eighth-inning homer off Brewers reliever Rob Zastryzny traveled an estimated 452 feet, slamming off the video board that hangs above the patio deck in right field. Advertisement 'That's 88 miles an hour that you're sending back,' Crow-Armstrong said. 'BP pop is a different kind of pop. I don't got it like that.' Crow-Armstrong puts on a show at game speed, not in batting practice. That huge left-handed swing happened during the same inning that saw him sprint from his central defensive position to make a spectacular diving catch in left field. He's a dynamic, wiry athlete who's listed at 6 feet and 190 pounds. Crow-Armstrong said he doesn't know if he 'can withstand however long the timer is' for the Home Run Derby's elimination bracket. 'That would be a struggle,' he said. At 23, Crow-Armstrong is perhaps being a little modest. He's the first player to hit that video board this season, and it marked the longest home run by a Cub this year. Either way, his chances of representing Chicago at the July 15 All-Star Game are strong. In MLB's first ballot update released Monday, Crow-Armstrong led all NL outfielders with 1,126,119 votes. To get a sense of Crow-Armstrong's popularity, Cubs teammate Kyle Tucker ranked second among NL outfielders with 700,000-plus votes. Fans want to see 'PCA' in that showcase, running around Atlanta's Truist Park with some of the best players in the world. 'That's an indication of people appreciating your play,' Crow-Armstrong said. 'I'm definitely proud of myself that I'm giving the fans a little bit better of a round this year, up to this point. But that's all it is — up to this point.'
