Shocking moment MLB star swings at fan in heated exchange during game

Daily Mail6 hours ago

A heated exchange between Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dennis Santana and a fan turned violent when the reliever shockingly launched himself at the stands.
With the 29-46 Pirates bottom of the National League Central, tensions appear to be taking their toll - both in the stands and the clubhouse.
And during the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers, the frustrations boiled over for Santana as he lost his head.
With the game heading into a rain delay, the 29-year-old was caught in a furious back-and-forth with a fan from the bullpen.
But the exchange escalated to a shocking level when Santana launched himself upwards and swung his fist at the side of the spectator's face.
In videos posted to social media, Santana appeared to fail to make contact and the fan quickly stepped back from the wall as the security guard accompanying the pitcher swiftly intervened.

A member of the Pirates' bullpen staff could then by seen pulling Santana away before a teammate ushered him into the clubhouse to cool down.
The fan appeared to be wearing a Tigers hat and a shirt honoring Pirates Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente.
The Pirates have yet to address the incident but the Tigers confirmed that the fan had been ejected from Comerica Park, per The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen.
The pirates had lost the opening game of the doubleheader 9–2. The second game was tied at 4-4 before heading into a rain delay in the ninth inning but Pittsburgh managed to clinch an 8-4 10th-inning win once play resumed.
Santana is enjoying one of his best seasons on the mound, recording a 1.74 ERA heading into Thursday with 25 strikeouts.
The journeyman is in his eighth season in the major leagues and his second with the Pirates after stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers, New York Mets, and New York Yankees.
MLB will likely investigate the incident. In 2023, Angels' Anthony Rendon was punished after he grabbed an Athletics fan pestering him. He received a five-game suspension, cut to four, and paid an undisclosed fine for the incident.
It isn't the only incident to have rocked the Pirates this season. In May, a Pittsburgh Pirates employee was caught in a shocking violent altercation with a fan at PNC Park.
In April, a Pirates fan fell 21ft from a stadium wall and suffered serious injuries
The staff member hurled punches and even attempted to whip the fan with a belt after their heated exchange of words came to blows. The game day employee was suspended by the MLB team following the wild scenes.
That altercation came just one week after Pirates fan Kavan Markwood slipped off a railing and fell from a 21-foot wall onto the field during the seventh inning of Pittsburgh's win over the Chicago Cubs.
He was rushed to hospital in critical condition after the horrific plunge, which left him with a broken neck, back and collarbone.
Around a week after Markwood's fall, doctors revealed he had made 'really remarkable progress'.
His friend, Evan Kirkwood, was arrested for buying Markwood just two beers - because he's underage.
Kirkwood, 21, told police investigating the incident that he bought friend Kavan Markwood, 20, the beers during the game against the Chicago Cubs on April 30.
Pirates icon McCutchen could be seen with his head in his hands in the immediate aftermath of the incident, while Pittsburgh owner Bob Nutting released a heartfelt statement, saying 'we are all deeply saddened and truly heartbroken'.

Ohtani and Tatis hit by pitches again as Dodgers-Padres rivalry boils over

It took seven games over 11 days for the simmer to reach full boil. The Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres flashed playoff intensity in their long-awaited first two series of the season and went face-to-face, quite literally, after 10 batters were hit during a stretch the Dodgers owned on the scoreboard. In winning five of the seven games, the Dodgers also hit Fernando Tatis Jr with pitches three times. The last of those came in the eighth inning of Thursday's 5-3 Padres victory when the benches finally cleared after Tatis was hit near the right hand. While the staredown behind home plate was more peacock feathers than fisticuffs, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and Padres manager Mike Shildt were ejected following a tense back-and-forth exchange. Afterward, the Padres' Manny Machado said his true feelings won't be known until Tatis gets results from X-rays and a CT scan. 'They gotta pray for [results] to come back negative tomorrow,' Machado said. 'They should. Us, too, but they should for sure.' After Tatis was hit, the Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani took a pitch to the back of his right (pitching) shoulder from Robert Suárez. With Dodgers players starting to move over the dugout railing, Ohtani waved back his teammates and took first base. Shohei Ohtani plays peacemaker at the end of another wild game between the Padres and Dodgers. 'Well, I think he knew it was intentional,' Roberts said. 'He wasn't hurt by it, and he didn't want any more drama, which I respect that a lot.' Ohtani was hit twice in the series, each a half inning after Tatis was hit. The Dodgers' Andy Pages also was hit twice in the series. Roberts said he hoped Tatis does not miss extended time. 'I didn't feel good about Tatis – great player, good guy – getting hit,' Roberts said. 'I didn't feel good about it. And so as [Shildt] comes out, and he's yelling at me and staring me down, that bothers me. Because, to be quite frank, that's the last thing I wanted.' Shildt said he has respect for the Dodgers but seeing Tatis get hit three times by their pitchers in less than two weeks doesn't sit right. He has also been hit by the Dodgers six times in his career, the most by any club. 'Whether it was [intentional] or it wasn't, enough is enough,' Shildt said. 'We got a guy who's getting X-rays right now, is one of the best players in the game, fortunately he's on our team, and this guy has taken shots, OK?' While the teams waited more than two months to face each other for the first time this season, there will be another two-month wait until they face off again 15-17 August at Los Angeles and 22-24 August at San Diego. 'It's going to be a fun ride,' Machado said. 'This division's freaking awesome, and it's going to be a fun ride going down the road. The Giants got better with [Rafael] Devers, and we know what these guys have on the other side. And what we have on this side. And obviously you can't count out Arizona. They've got a really good team over there. They're going to be battling. It's a four-headed monster battling it out, so it'll be an interesting second half.'

Billionaire Mark Walter, set to own controlling stake in Lakers, built fortune in investing

The billionaire slated to take over the controlling interest in the Los Angeles Lakers has built a career leading businesses investing in everything from sports franchises to artificial intelligence. Mark Walter is CEO of the global investment and advisory company Guggenheim Partners, which is estimated to have more than $325 billion in assets. He's also co-founder and CEO of holding company TWG Global. Forbes estimates Walter's net worth is $6.1 billion. The publication ranked him at No. 216 on its Forbes 400 list last year. Walter received an undergraduate degree in business administration from Creighton University and a law degree from Northwestern University, but ultimately chose business over a career in law. In the mid-1990s, he co-founded Liberty Hampshire, an investment management firm in Chicago. That business became part of Guggenheim Partners, which Walter co-founded in the late 1990s. In addition to Guggenheim, Walter co-founded TWG Global with film producer Thomas Tull. The company holds a portfolio of finance and insurance sector companies, including Guggenheim Investments, Guggenheim Securities, Group 1001 Insurance and Delaware Life. It also includes aerospace and defense technology company Shield AI. Last month, TWG Global announced a partnership with Palantir Technologies and Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, maker of Grok, aimed at developing artificial intelligence for use in the financial services industry. TWG Global also includes investments in sports, media and entertainment franchises, such as the controlling interest in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Premier League club Chelsea, the Professional Women's Hockey League and — through TWG Motorsports — ownership of several auto racing teams including Cadillac Formula 1. Beyond business, Walter and his wife, Kimbra, have founded or contributed to various philanthropic organizations, including the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, the Academy Group, Chicago Beyond and OneGoal.
