Teen hospitalized after scooter crash

A 14-year-old scooter driver was airlifted to hospital after police say he was hit by another vehicle near the northwest boundary of Barrie Friday night. According to the Barrie Police Service (BPS), the crash occurred at around 10:30 p.m. on County Road 27 south of Dunlop Street West. The youth reportedly suffered serious injuries in the incident. Police confirmed that he was taken to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) and then airlifted to a Toronto area trauma centre. No charges have been laid yet. A spokesperson from the BPS told CTV News that the scooter likely did not have lights. Provincial police were also involved in the response and reportedly responded to a bush party in the area around the time of the crash. The BPS spokesperson added that there is 'nothing to suggest' that the scooter-car collision was related to the bush party. The area was closed in the aftermath of the crash and has since been reopened.

Barrie man among 35 others charged in large scale child exploitation investigation

A Barrie man has been charged along with 35 other individuals in connection with a large-scale, province-wide child sexual exploitation investigation resulting in a total of 128 charges laid. Provincial police say members from more than 20 police services, including the Barrie Police Service, posed as children in online chatrooms and social media apps during the two-week course of the investigation to identify and locate individuals seeking to sexually exploit children. "Although this was a luring investigation in which officers posed as children online and waited for offenders to make contact, nine real victims were identified," provincial police stated. 'One of the accused arrived at the meeting location with snacks and one arrived with sexual paraphernalia (lubricant and condoms). One of the arrested was listed on the National Sex Offender Registry.' Those accused are all men between 18 and 73 years of age, including a 55-year-old Barrie man, who is charged with three counts of luring a person under 16 and making sexually explicit material available to a child. He has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for next week. 'These results highlight a sobering reality: predators can easily reach children in online spaces. We urge parents and guardians to remain vigilant and to talk to your children about staying safe online. Just as you wouldn't leave your child alone in a city, don't let them navigate the online world alone," stated OPP Det. Staff Sgt. Tim Brown.

Three men arrested in ‘chaotic' fight

A Barrie police car at the scene of an investigation in this undated file image. Police in Barrie arrested and charged three men after responding to a fight in the south end of the city Tuesday night. According to the Barrie Police Service (BPS), officers received a report about two men fighting near Mapleview Drive East and Huronia Road, and that weapons might have been involved. One of the men was arrested as soon as the officers arrived at the scene, and police say he made threats toward the officers as they were taking him into custody. The second man allegedly fled into a wooden area before being located and arrested by the BPS Canine Unit. Additional information police say they obtained involved a third man and a woman who were unknown, and that they may have taken two of the first man's children. Police say the officers eventually ended up at a home on Shalom Way where they found the children unharmed and arrested the third man and woman. Then, due to what police describe as 'complex' issues prior to and after their arrest, the duo was hospitalized for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation continued with the help of detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division. Through the information they gathered, police say they learned that the four adults were all known to each other, spending that afternoon together before deciding to walk to a convenience store with the children. Police later confirmed that the initial fight was found to be consensual, and no weapons were involved. However, a spokesperson from the BPS told CTV News that alcohol was 'more than likely' a contributing factor. The two men in the initial fight were each charged with two counts of causing a disturbance by fighting. The first man was also charged with two counts of uttering threats for his alleged actions toward the arresting officers. The third man who was found at the Shalom Way home was charged with two counts of obstructing police and was held for a bail hearing. The woman was released unconditionally.

Police warn of summer home renovation and repair scams

With the calendar flipping to June this week, police in Barrie are warning residents to be aware of common scams involving summer renovations and repairs. In a notice by the Barrie Police Service (BPS), they explain that home renovation scams typically involve contractors overcharging, doing substandard work, or taking payments and disappearing without completing their job. Police say these scams can cost homeowners thousands of dollars and often leave properties in worse conditions than before. Renovation Scam Behaviours Common behaviours detailed by the BPS include lowball biding, storm chasing, licence or permit fraud, and unnecessary repairing. Police define lowball bidding as contractors offering unusually low estimates to win a job, then demanding more money during the project through fabricated issues or surprise costs. Storm chasers, according to police, target neighbourhoods after weather events, promising quick repairs without proper licencing or insurance. Scammers are also known to use fake licences or for failing to get required permits, resulting in homeowner liability. Unnecessary repair scammers tend to convince homeowners that urgent and expensive repair work is needed when it is not. Other red-flag behaviours listed by police include no physical address or company website, pressure for immediate action, and offers that seem to good to be true. Police advice The BPS urges homeowners to get multiple quotes and bids for a project, verify their contractor's licencing and insurance, check their contractor's reviews and references, and to use a written contract that outlines all the details of a project. In terms of payment, homeowners are urged to avoid giving large sums upfront, avoid paying before work starts, and to use checks or credit cards to keep a paper trail instead of using cash. Police say the standard upfront payment is between 10 and 30 per cent of a total project's cost. Chimney scam The BPS confirmed that they are aware of a scam in the city that involves chimney and home repair and are warning residents to be advised. Police urge homeowners to be cautious of contractors who show up uninvited and point out a problem with their home.
