After raising $38M, African e-commerce startup Sabi lays off 20%, pivots to traceable exports

African B2B e-commerce startup Sabi has laid off around 20% of its workforce (~50 employees) as it pivots from its original retail-focused platform to double down on a growing business in commodity exports. The layoffs, confirmed by the company on Thursday, are part of a broader restructuring aimed at aligning resources with what it describes as rising demand for traceable, ethically sourced commodities, an area it began building out last year under a new vertical called TRACE (Technology Rails for African Commodity Exchange). Launched in Lagos in 2020, Sabi began as a software platform helping informal retailers digitize inventory and sales amid COVID-19 disruptions. It later expanded into a fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) marketplace with embedded finance, scaling across Nigeria and Kenya. By mid-2023, Sabi claimed over 300,000 merchants and $1 billion in annualized GMV. That momentum helped it secure a $38 million Series B round at a $300 million valuation. But like many startups in the B2B e-commerce space in Africa, Sabi faced structural headwinds: thin margins, capital intensity, and tough unit economics. Unlike competitors that burned through capital, Sabi maintained an asset-light model and stayed profitable. Still, the market shift has been clear. In March, the company launched TRACE as a new business line, alongside FMCG. The new vertical targets mineral and agricultural exports such as lithium, cobalt, tin, and cash crops, where global buyers increasingly demand transparency, ESG compliance, and traceability. Sabi says it now exports over 20,000 tons of such commodities monthly to buyers across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. VibeAI: The Next Interface For B2B Applications

In 2025, that prediction is playing out faster than most anticipated. What's increasingly clear is this: The most important shift isn't just in what software can do—it's in how we interact with it. We're entering the Vibe era. From Vibe Coding To VibeAI The term "vibe coding" was popularized by AI OpenAI cofounder Andrej Karpathy to describe a new software coding model where natural language and AI co-pilot technologies replace traditional code writing. Developers no longer write every line; instead, they describe their intent, and the AI builds, debugs and iterates with them. This approach isn't limited to engineering. Across every business function—from sales and marketing to accounting—we're seeing the rise of applications that behave like 'vibe collaborators.' LANDR technology is helping professional musicians use AI-mastering technology process and enhance their music. (No wonder nearly 60% of musicians now use AI technology within their music projects.) Meanwhile, management consultancy Deloitte is leveraging its AI tools and technologies to help its analysts and consultants improve efficiency, gain deeper business insights and deliver more value to clients. Pfizer is also leveraging the Tempus' AI-enabled platform to help researchers further advances in oncology therapeutic development. These vibe collaborators proactively surface ideas, act and ask for approval only when needed. They're fast. They're intelligent. And they work the way people think—not the other way around. To describe this broader shift, I'm introducing a framework that I like to call VibeAI. Vibe stands for: • You view AI-generated outputs or strategic suggestions relevant to your role. • You interact with those suggestions to preview, modify or evaluate outcomes. • You build new strategies or outputs via natural language, using AI as a co-creator. • You edit quickly and intuitively to make it your own. This isn't a new feature of software as we know it, but a completely new interface that recasts vertical and functional applications. In finance, for example, a VibeAI tool might recommend budget adjustments, run scenario planning and manage board reporting preparation—all through an interface. In HR, AI could identify employee frustration, recommend compensation levels and draft job descriptions. In product development, AI could help turn ideas into prototypes and then provide instant feedback. These VibeAI applications, in other words, leverage proprietary data and domain-specific models to create capabilities for businesses that we have never seen before. This is in contrast to general-purpose AI, which has recognizable limits. To drive real outcomes, systems need context—historical performance, intent signals, benchmarks and feedback—and the ability to act on them in real time. General-purpose AI doesn't provide this. But VibeAI will. The Vibe Is Shifting Automation is undergoing a renaissance. It happens now and then. Every few years, chips make a remarkable leap. Platforms and even individual applications do, too. And so do interfaces—the very means with which we interact with our devices and systems. Punch cards? The C prompt? And then the little GUI that said, 'Hello?' They all made significant contributions to how we interact with our machines. And lately, Google, Instagram and even X are doing similar things. Now, we are on the cusp of another massive change. The next transformation will be defined by AI. But this time, it's not just about interacting with devices and systems—it's about rethinking how work gets done. At Landbase, we've been exploring these ideas in the realm of digital demand generation—working to provide AI to make targeting and automation strategies accessible to businesses of all sizes. To prepare for this new era, you're going to have to make some changes to your organization. You'll need to develop new use cases for AI technology. Hardware platforms may need upgrading. Workflows will need to be adjusted as AI use expands and manages more tasks for workers. Employees will need to be trained in crafting effective prompts so they can iterate with AI in the most effective way possible. And guardrails will need to be erected in intelligent ways. AI will test organizations to develop detailed plans for managing intellectual property, security, privacy, quality assurance and more. This will require human intervention on an ongoing basis. New Delhi: Consumer durable companies in India are expected to report moderate growth in the first quarter of the financial year 2025-26 (April-June), according to a recent report by Goldman Sachs. The report mentioned that the overall growth for consumer durables and electrical companies is likely to slow down in the current quarter. It stated "We expect consumer durables and electricals companies' growth to moderate this quarter. While B2B categories have a better outlook". While the business-to-business (B2B) categories are performing better due to strong government capital expenditure in April and continued work on major government-led projects like PM-KUSUM, RDSS, and Bharatnet, the business-to-consumer (B2C) categories are expected to see slower growth during this period. According to the report, demand from B2C segments is still weak, and the real estate-driven demand has not yet picked up. This is especially visible in the cooling products category like air-conditioners and refrigerators, where sales have been on the lower side. As a result, the overall growth expectations for companies covered under consumer durables have come down for this quarter. Goldman Sachs added that although some positive macroeconomic factors like lower inflation, tax cuts, and favourable interest rates are present, their impact on demand and consumer sentiment is likely to be seen only in the second half of FY26. The report also highlighted that companies are facing margin pressures due to negative operating leverage, which means their fixed costs remain high while revenue growth is not strong enough to offset them. However, this margin pressure is being partially managed by lower commodity prices and selective price increases in products. In terms of raw material prices, copper and aluminium have seen a month-on-month increase in May and June. This may lead to some restocking by companies.

Moreover, with its role as the largest private investor in the European Union's IRIS² (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite) program, the public-private partnership aiming to build a multi-orbit constellation delivering secure communication services to the EU and its Member States, Eutelsat confirms its status as a central player in assuring Europe's space and connectivity sovereignty. €1.35 billion equity capital increase to be executed by year-end to fulfill strategic plan and longer-term ambitions Eutelsat is contemplating raising €1.35 billion of capital by way of (i) a reserved capital increase of €716 million at a price per share of €4 corresponding to a +32%2 premium to the 30-day-VWAP of the shares as computed on Euronext Paris (the "Reserved Capital Increase"), which would be subscribed by the French State via the Agence des Participations de l'Etat ("APE")3, Bharti Space Limited, CMA CGM, and Le Fonds Stratégique de Participations ("FSP"), and (ii) a rights issue of €634 million (the "Rights Issue"), which would be subscribed for their rights by the above investors. Prior to the approval of the Reserved Capital Increase by Eutelsat's shareholders, the APE will acquire the shares of the Company currently held by Bpifrance Participations, at a price per share equal to the subscription price of the Reserved Capital Increase. Consequently, the Board member representing Bpifrance Participations would be replaced by a representative of the French State. This capital increase would represent a pivotal step in Eutelsat's strategic and financing roadmap, enabling the execution of its strategic vision. Coupled with a dedicated debt refinancing plan, this capital increase will reinforce the Company's financial flexibility by accelerating its deleveraging and support investment in its existing Low Earth Orbit (LEO) capabilities and the future IRIS² constellation. On the back of the forthcoming capital increase, Eutelsat would reduce its leverage to c. 2.5x4 by year-end FY'2025-26, and would be well placed to tap debt capital markets, raise export credit financing and extend its bank debt maturities in order to fully cover the financing needs of its medium-term plan. The French State via the APE, Bharti Space Limited, CMA CGM, and FSP (together the "Reserved Capital Increase Investors") have entered into commitments to subscribe to the Reserved Capital Increase and the Rights Issue pro-rata their shareholding post the Reserved Capital Increase. Such commitments are subject to, inter alia, shareholders' approvals at an Extraordinary Shareholders' Meeting to be held around the end of the third quarter of calendar 2025, customary regulatory approvals, as well as the execution, under mutually acceptable conditions, of an amended, non-concerting shareholders' agreement reflecting the ownership structure post Reserved Capital Increase. The capital increase has been unanimously approved by the Eutelsat Board members present or represented. Subject to the above, the Reserved Capital Increase Investors have also committed to vote in favor of the transaction at the extraordinary shareholders' meeting (which would implement the governance5 changes in connection with the Reserved Capital Increase and during which the Company will also request new authorisations for the Rights Issue) and to maintain their share ownership until the launch of the Rights Issue. The Reserved Capital Increase and the Rights Issue are expected to be completed by the end of calendar 2025 at the latest. The Reserved Capital Increase would be subscribed by the French State via APE for €526.4 million, Bharti Space Limited for €31.4 million, CMA CGM for €100.4 million, and FSP for €57.8 million. Discussions are ongoing with other interested investors, including His Majesty's Government6, which could join the capital raise in due course. Following the two transactions, and subject to participation from investors, the French State would hold a stake of 29.99% of the capital and voting rights, while Bharti Space Limited, CMA CGM and FSP would respectively hold 18.70%, 7.81% and 5.22% of the share capital and voting rights, being specified that the Reserved Capital Increase Investors would not be in a position to launch a public takeover. Financial outlook: solid growth and an industry-leading margin Eutelsat demonstrates some of the most attractive growth and profitability prospects in the sector, with revenue expected to range between €1.5 and €1.7 billion by the end of FY'2028–297, supported by the strong momentum of LEO revenues, which are significantly outperforming the market. Operating leverage is expected to drive mid-to-high-single-digit percentage point improvements in EBITDA margin8, resulting in a margin of at least 60% by FY'2028-29. In the longer-term (post FY'2028-29), B2B connectivity market is expected to pursue its growth at a double-digit rate, mostly driven by LEO market expansion. For FY'2025-269, Eutelsat targets revenues in line with, and an adjusted EBITDA margin slightly below, those of FY'2024-25, notably due to the impact of Russian sanctions in the Video Business. Benefitting from commercial momentum, LEO revenues are expected to grow by 50% year-on-year. Eutelsat confirms its objectives for FY'2024-25, to be published on 5th August, of Operating Vertical Revenues around the same level as FY'2023-24 and an adjusted EBITDA margin slightly below the level of FY'2023-24. Gross capital expenditure is expected in a range of €500-600 million. Gross capital expenditures are expected to reach approximately €1.0 to €1.1 billion in fiscal year 2025–26, reflecting the timing of key milestones— including the order of an initial batch of 100 additional satellites starting in December 2024, as well as the procurement of 340 more satellites for the current LEO constellation. From 2025–26 onwards, gross capex will be focused on LEO activities, in line with the Group's strategic vision, primarily for the Gen-1 follow-on program (with a total envelope of €2 billion between 2024–25 and 2028–29). Gross capex will also be deployed for GEO operations to ensure service a gross capital expenditure envelope of around €2 billion will be allocated to the deployment of IRIS2, for the essential starting from 2027–28 onwards. The abovementioned capital increases would secure Eutelsat's deleveraging path, with Net Debt/EBITDA estimated at c.2.5x by year-end FY'2025-26, ensuring a robust and self-funded financing structure.
