‘Door open' for Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner to play at music venue's final gig

Kane, 39, who plays with Turner in The Last Shadow Puppets, is due to play the venue's last gig on June 27, after The Leadmill announced it would have to leave its premises in the South Yorkshire city after losing a long-running eviction battle with its landlord, Electric Group. Arctic Monkeys played several early shows at the venue before the release of their first album, Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not, and Kane has said he would welcome Turner's return to the stage during an interview with Radio X. Asked whether the Sheffield-born singer, who is also 39, would join him, Kane said: 'Well, he's redecorating it (The Leadmill) at the minute, so he's making it all leopard print for us, because, you know, it's got to be done by hand. 'My door's always open for my bro, he knows that, and that's that.' Turner has not performed live since Arctic Monkeys' last gig on their tour in support of latest album The Car (2022) in 2023. The duo have seen both of their albums with The Last Shadow Puppets reach number one in the UK albums chart, and Kane said it would be an 'honour' to play The Leadmill's last gig having performed there throughout his career. He told Radio X: 'It's served me well, and Sheffield as a city as well has always had my back with gigs, that'd be one of the first to sell out or whatever. 'So, it's a complete honour, and let's give it a good send-off. I think it'll be a very special night, and it always pops off in there, and hopefully next Friday it won't be any different.' Arctic Monkeys have seen six of their seven albums reach number one, and two of their singles reach the peak of the UK singles chart in I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and When The Sun Goes Down. The band performed I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and a cover of The Beatles' Come Together at the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games in 2012, and have also headlined Glastonbury on three occasions, in 2007, 2013 and 2023.

Miles Kane is 'open' to a Last Shadow Puppets reunion with Alex Turner

Miles Kane is "open" to a Last Shadow Puppets reunion. The indie star formed the supergroup with Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner in 2007, and their last album was 2016's Everything You've Come to Expect, which was accompanied with a tour. Although there are no current plans for the pair to get back onstage together or record new music, including at the final concert at Sheffield's The Leadmill in Alex's home city, which will be headlined by Miles, he isn't ruling out future projects with his pal. Speaking to NME, Miles said of a possible reunion: 'There are no plans for it at the minute, but my door is always open.' Quizzed on whether he'd like to hit the studio again with Alex, he replied: 'Well, I would, but we'll just see where it goes. I'm always up for anything, me.' Miles is also in the supergroup The Jaded Hearts Club - also comprising Matt Bellamy (Muse), Graham Coxon (Blur), Nic Cester (Jet), Sean Payne (The Zutons), and Jamie Davis - and is keen to work with them to. He said: 'Bring it all on, mate! Bring it all on." Miles has just announced his new album, Sunlight In The Shadows, which saw him work with studio wizard and The Black Keys star Dan Auerbach - who is known for his work with Lana Del Rey. He said of the record and working with Dan: 'All roads, over 20 years, have led here. 'Dan and I love mixing T. Rex, Motown and The Easybeats and the result is this record. When we were chatting and sharing references, we were so similar in taste it was frightening and you can hear that shared passion through the music. I can't wait to take it out on the road. It's an album that needs to be played live." The album features contributions from Pat McLaughlin, Daniel Tashian and The Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney. Dan sings backing vocals and plays on every track, with further guitars by Tom Bukovac, guitarist Nick Bockrath of Cage The Elephant and Barrie Cadogan from British garage futurists Little Barrie. The producer commented: "This record was incredible to make from start to finish. I felt like I gained a life-long friend in Miles. And that doesn't always happen. When it does, it's amazing. This is an artist who could potentially make records forever." The lead single and opening track, Love Is Cruel, is out now. Miles said of the track: 'It's easy to reflect on life and to get caught up in what's happened before. "It's important not to let those thoughts control you. The track begins with 'she's a midnight scooter rider,' which is one of my favourite opening lines to a single. It sets the tone lyrically and musically for what's to come. Think Clint Eastwood and Judy Garland in the desert at dusk!' Sunlight In The Shadows is out on October 17. Sunlight In The Shadows tracklisting: 1. Love Is Cruel 2. Electric Flower 3. Sunlight In The Shadows 4. Coming Down The Road 5. Always In Over My Head 6. Blue Skies 7. My Love 8. Without You 9. Sing A Song To Love 10. Slow Death 11. I Pray 12. Walk On The Ocean

Brit awards swap London for Manchester to ‘invigorate' show

It has been one of the high points of London's music calendar for almost half a century, but the Brit awards has confirmed it is ditching the capital and moving to Manchester next year. The celebration of British music will be held at the Co-op Live arena in 2026 and 2027 – its 50th anniversary – as part of plans to 'invigorate' the show, organisers said. Next year is the first of three years of Sony stewardship for the Brit awards, responsible for some the UK's most famous music moments led by northern acts, including Jarvis Cocker mooning at Michael Jackson in 1996, Chumbawamba dumping a bucket of ice water over the then deputy prime minister John Prescott in 1998, and Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner's literal mic-drop after his speech trashing the music industry in 2014. Organisers said moving the Brits to the home of the legendary Haçienda club and Factory Records 'perfectly captures the spirit and energy' of the event. The chair and CEO of Sony Music UK & Ireland, Jason Iley, described it as a 'very exciting time'. 'Moving to Manchester, the home of some of the most iconic and defining artists of our lifetime, will invigorate the show and build on the Brits legacy of celebrating and reinvesting in world-class music,' he said. 'Hosting the show in Manchester, with its vibrant cultural history, perfectly captures the spirit and energy of the Brit awards.' 'Greater Manchester has an unparalleled music heritage known around the world, and this summer will play host to some of the biggest gigs on the planet,' he said. 'That was only made possible by our strong commitment to new talent and giving emerging artists the opportunities to make their name. 'Celebrating the Brit awards right here in the home of 24-hour party people is the next chapter in its story and you can be sure that we will help them do it in style.' The move is part of a wider trend in the music industry towards celebrating the north of England as being responsible for some of the world's biggest music stars past and present. The MTV European music awards were held at Co-op Live last year, and the Mobo awards has spent its last two years in the northern cities of Sheffield and Newcastle. The Northern music awards, recognising homegrown talent, are in their second year after their inaugural event in Manchester in 2024.
