Brit awards swap London for Manchester to ‘invigorate' show
It has been one of the high points of London's music calendar for almost half a century, but the Brit awards has confirmed it is ditching the capital and moving to Manchester next year.
The celebration of British music will be held at the Co-op Live arena in 2026 and 2027 – its 50th anniversary – as part of plans to 'invigorate' the show, organisers said.
Next year is the first of three years of Sony stewardship for the Brit awards, responsible for some the UK's most famous music moments led by northern acts, including Jarvis Cocker mooning at Michael Jackson in 1996, Chumbawamba dumping a bucket of ice water over the then deputy prime minister John Prescott in 1998, and Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner's literal mic-drop after his speech trashing the music industry in 2014.
Organisers said moving the Brits to the home of the legendary Haçienda club and Factory Records 'perfectly captures the spirit and energy' of the event.
The chair and CEO of Sony Music UK & Ireland, Jason Iley, described it as a 'very exciting time'.
'Moving to Manchester, the home of some of the most iconic and defining artists of our lifetime, will invigorate the show and build on the Brits legacy of celebrating and reinvesting in world-class music,' he said.
'Hosting the show in Manchester, with its vibrant cultural history, perfectly captures the spirit and energy of the Brit awards.'

The Greater Manchester mayor, Andy Burnham, pointed to the 'unparalleled music heritage' of the city, which has spawned artists such as Oasis, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays and Take That.
'Greater Manchester has an unparalleled music heritage known around the world, and this summer will play host to some of the biggest gigs on the planet,' he said. 'That was only made possible by our strong commitment to new talent and giving emerging artists the opportunities to make their name.
'Celebrating the Brit awards right here in the home of 24-hour party people is the next chapter in its story and you can be sure that we will help them do it in style.'
The move is part of a wider trend in the music industry towards celebrating the north of England as being responsible for some of the world's biggest music stars past and present.
The MTV European music awards were held at Co-op Live last year, and the Mobo awards has spent its last two years in the northern cities of Sheffield and Newcastle. The Northern music awards, recognising homegrown talent, are in their second year after their inaugural event in Manchester in 2024.

King Charles teams up with Netflix for new documentary starring Idris Elba - after Prince Harry and Meghan's £80billion mega-deal 'flopped'
His son's offerings for the streaming giant have almost universally flopped. But that hasn't stopped Netflix signing up another member of the Royal Family - none other than the King himself. The firm today announced a 'major new partnership' between King Charles and Hollywood star Idris Elba for a new documentary film exploring the impact of The King's Trust as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. As a young man, Idris Elba was the beneficiary of a grant from the Trust, then known as The Prince's Trust, which the actor openly says changed his life and enabled him to study acting. Idris will accompany The King as he offers 'rare access and insights' into his support for the Trust - which he set up in 1976 with his modest naval pension to change the lives of disadvantaged young people - over the past five decades. At its heart will be the 'compelling' stories of some of the one million young people the charity has gone on to help around the world. The documentary begins filming next week and will launch on Netflix in Autumn 2026. It is produced by 22 Summers, a production company founded by Idris Elba and Diene Petterle. The director is the BAFTA award-winning Ashley Francis-Roy and boasts executive producers including Eva Omaghom, who previously worked for the king for many years including as his 'diversity tzar'. The production team will include young people supported by the Trust to build experience in film and television. Elba said: 'The King's Trust gave me an opportunity that changed my life. At a time when I didn't have the resources to pursue my ambitions, they offered real, practical support - including financial help - that helped me take those first steps to advance my career. 'Today, through the Elba Hope Foundation, I'm focused on creating those same opportunities for young people who are full of potential but lacking access. Around the world, millions are still waiting for that one door to open. 'This documentary is about shining a light on what's possible when it does — and why the work of The King's Trust remains so important.' The King will not give an interview to the documentary crew but will, it is understood, be filmed 'in conversation' with other participants. Duo take on zip wire dressed in space armour from Aliens film
Fundraisers dressed in armour based on the 1986 film Aliens have taken on a zip wire challenge at a Cornish Clifford and John Mason completed a zip wire at the Adrenalin Quarry in Menheniot, Cornwall on pair are members of the historical organisation the Fellowship of the Knights of the Round Table of King Arthur, and wanted to wear armour during the activity. In the end they said they opted for "space armour" as medieval armour did not fit with the zip wire harness. 'Fantastic' Their outfits were made to look like Colonial Marines from the film Aliens which starred Sigourney Weaver. Fiona Rainbird Clarke, who is part of the fellowship of the knights, said master armourer Terry English who made the armour for the original film created duplicates for the pair. "Terry just made it happen, which is fantastic," she added they "committed themselves to take on any challenge that's a bit crazy and run with it." The money raised is set to be donated to Children's Hospice South West. The pair, both from Glastonbury, also have plans to go around Glastonbury Tor five times in "big heavy metal armour" in September.
