I tried this '5-2-4 fartlek' walking workout for a week — and it's a game-changer

Walking workouts are all the rage at the moment — from silent walking for your mental health, to the military-inspired rucking technique to build muscle. But one form of walking workout making headlines is the Japanese Interval Walking Training (IWT), which promises to burn more fat and lower your blood pressure by alternating your pace. Unlike walking 10,000 steps, this science-based method raises your heart rate and boosts your cardiovascular fitness in less time. This isn't an entirely new phenomenon, however. "Fartlek" walking has been around for a while, and translates to 'speed play' from the native Swedish. It's all about varying the pace and difficulty throughout your walk, mixing intervals of faster-paced walks with slower rambles, allowing you to catch your breath. A study found that alternating periods of brisk and slow walking speeds can improve cardiovascular fitness, boost your overall fitness, and help control blood sugar spikes. Keen to give a new workout a try, I built my own fartlek walking session, and repeated it every morning for seven days. Read on to find out more. Ready to get walking? Here's the workout: Even with the warm-up, this workout took me around 30 minutes every morning. I programmed the workout onto my Apple Watch 10 to avoid having to look at my wrist every few minutes — my watch would buzz when it was time to switch pace. While this workout is suitable for all levels, as you're walking speed will be based on your exertion levels, if you're new to fitness, or you're returning to exercise following an injury or pregnancy, it's always a good idea to speak to your doctor before taking on a new routine. Here's my verdict after a week of walking: Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. For those who haven't tried it, the Japanese Interval Walking Training method involves three minutes at a low intensity, then three minutes walking at a high intensity for 30 minutes. This was a slight step up, as the high-intensity part of the workout was longer, and the recovery blocks were shorter. I found that I didn't have long to catch my breath before I was picking up the pace again. I personally loved the extra challenge of walking at a brisk pace for five minutes. I thought about my walking technique — engaging my core so my abs were working, keeping my chest open and shoulders down, and swinging my arms as I moved. If you're new to fartlek walking, or you're getting back into fitness, it might be a good idea to try the three-minute intervals first and build up to five minutes. Like all working parents will appreciate, I have a lot to juggle, and despite writing about fitness for a living, sometimes it's my workouts that suffer. Despite only being 30 minutes long, I felt like I'd worked hard with this interval walk. I'd raised my heart rate higher than I would typically do on a dog walk, and I've found interval walking is a great option for those who want to reap the benefits of walking, without the time to take a longer stroll. Walking can help improve your overall fitness, build muscle, strengthen your bones and joints, and help boost your mood and lower stress. You'll also burn more calories doing a fartlek walk than you typically would walking at the same pace for the same time. If you are walking for weight loss, remember the key is to be in a calorie deficit, burning more calories than you consume. One of the easiest ways to keep an eye on your pace, heart rate, and calorie burn is to strap one of the best fitness trackers to your wrist. I was instantly hooked after a week of the Japanese walking method, and I equally enjoyed this fartlek workout. As a runner, I use my walks as a form of active recovery, but this was a great way to work on my cardiovascular endurance, without the impact of running. It also helped me de-stress and boost my mood, plus, it gave me the excuse to take a break from my laptop and spend 30 minutes outdoors in nature — something we should all do more of. If fitting long workouts into your routine feels overwhelming, this can be done with no equipment, on your lunch break, in your local park or even on the treadmill at the gym. Plus, the joy of fartlek is the freedom to play with your pace — if structured intervals feel too much, just walk faster for two blocks, then slower for a block, or use street lights as your markers. However fast or slow you walk, you're getting fitter and healthier with every step.

I walked 8,000 steps with the Apple Watch 10 vs Garmin Forerunner 570 — and one was more accurate

These days, the best fitness trackers on the market do a hell of a lot more than just count your steps. Both the Garmin Forerunner 570 and Apple Watch 10 are designed to be worn 24/7, and can track everything from your heart rate variability to your menstrual cycle. But if you've wondered which is more accurate when it comes to step-counting, you've come to the right place. In my latest step-counting challenge, I strapped the Garmin Forerunner 570 to one wrist, my Apple Watch Series 10 to the other, and manually counted my steps to compare. Read on to find out which came out on top. Both watches count your steps by using an internal accelerometer, which measures the swing of your arm. Each swing counts for two steps. It doesn't matter whether you wear your watch on your dominant or non-dominant hand, or whether you're walking with your hands in your pockets, or holding something, the accelerometer should still measure your body's movement. I've used both devices for tracking my workouts in the past, although the Garmin Forerunner 570 is a newer device, only launching a month ago. If you've followed Tom's Guide for a while, you'll know this isn't my first step-count comparison. In fact, you can read what happened when I did the same test with the Garmin Forerunner 570's predecessor in my Garmin Forerunner 265 vs Apple Watch 10 face-off here. For all of these challenges, I use my trusty clicker counter. Every step I took, I clicked. When I got home, I downloaded all the data. If you own an Apple Watch, you'll also know that Apple doesn't include step count data in its workout summaries. You can see your overall steps for the entire day, but not how many steps you took on a particular walk (probably because steps aren't actually that useful a metric, but annoying for me when writing these articles.) Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. This challenge was originally 10,000 steps, but I lost the beginning of my walk as the StepsApp on my Apple Watch decided to stop working. I switched to the Pedometer+ app and started again. Here are the results: Manual: 8,000 steps Garmin Forerunner 570: 8,100 steps Apple Watch 10 7,700 steps As you can see from the results, the Garmin Forerunner 570 was pretty much spot on, counting 100 steps more than I did. The Apple Watch 10, on the other hand, missed 300 steps. Of course, to truly test the accuracy of the two watches, you'd need to do a lot more testing on a much bigger scale. I'm also not saying that the Apple Watch 10 isn't accurate. The average person takes 2,000 steps in a mile, so missing 300 steps isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things. Interestingly, for the walk, my Apple Watch recorded the distance as 3.79 miles, whereas my Garmin recorded 3.85 miles. Again, we're talking about very small differences here. Without getting into the smartwatch vs sportswatch debate, it seems important to also point out that these watches do a lot more than just count steps. Without getting into the smartwatch vs sportswatch debate, it seems important to also point out that these watches do a lot more than just count steps. The Apple Watch 10 is the best smartwatch on the market and is like having your iPhone on your wrist. The Garmin Forerunner 570, by comparison, doesn't have as many smartwatch features but is Garmin's mid-tier Forerunner, designed to accurately track your marathon training. It's one of the best Garmin watches I've ever tested, and the bright screen is truly beautiful. Whichever device you choose to strap to your wrist, know that they're both counting your steps, so, unlike me, you don't have to. While counting steps isn't always the best metric to focus on when it comes to getting in shape and losing weight, it's a good place to start. A review of 32 studies, published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity found that '10,000 steps/day is a reasonable target for healthy adults.' If you're looking for more inspiration, you've come to the right place — read what happened when I tried this Japanese walking method, as well as this 5-4-5 walking technique.

I tried the '3-3 walking workout' for a week — and now I'm hooked

There's a lot to be said for walking workouts — they're free, you don't need any fancy equipment, and they're suitable for all fitness levels. Here on the Tom's Guide fitness desk, we love nothing more than lacing up our sneakers and giving a new walking workout a try. Recently we've tried this Japanese walking method, the 5-4-5 walking technique, 'fart walking', and rucking. Next on our list? This 3x3 walking workout. All you'll need to give this one a go is some comfortable shoes, 35 minutes, and something to time your intervals on. One of the best fitness trackers might help, as you'll be able to build a workout without having to keep your smartphone in your hand, but it's not essential. Remember, if you're a complete beginner or you're returning to exercise following an injury or pregnancy, it's always a good idea to chat to your doctor beforehand. If you're bored of your normal walking routine, this workout is a great way to mix things up. You'll repeat a number of faster walking intervals, raising your heart rate and boosting your cardiovascular fitness. Here's how to do it: As with most of the walking workouts we've covered, alternating between fast and slow paces is a great way to improve your cardiovascular fitness. Whether you're walking to lose weight or get fitter, this HIIT style walking workout increases the heart rate and blood flow, which strengthens the heart and lungs. It's also likely to burn more calories than just walking at a steady pace. Walking, especially outdoors, can help improve your mood and reduce stress and anxiety. It's also a great form of exercise for working on your bone health and muscle strength. Do a walking workout a few times a week, and you're protecting yourself from injuries down the line. To practice what I preach, I added the 3 x 3 walking workout to my morning routine for a week. Here's my verdict: Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. I walk every morning for my mental health, but my daily walks have helped me get fitter, avoid running injuries, and recover from childbirth. I'll admit most of the time I grab a coffee and the dog, and don't pay any attention to my pace. I really enjoyed the faster intervals, and found they really boosted my heart rate and helped me work up a sweat. I often use my walks as a form of active recovery, so this extra intensity, without the impact, was great. A confession — I once threw my tennis racket at my little brother mid lesson because he was beating me. I'm extremely competitive, annoyingly so, and even with myself. On my first few intervals, I set out at a rapid walking pace that looked more like the speed walking event at the Olympics. By my third day, I ignored the numbers on my watch, and based the intervals on effort and had a much more enjoyable time. I've been doing a lot of these walking challenges, and while I often set them up as a custom workout on my Apple Watch 10, on the morning that I had to leave my watch behind to charge, this one was refreshingly easy to remember. If you're using a stopwatch, three minutes on, three minutes off is pretty simple. It also makes this workout pretty easy to adjust as you get fitter. You could easily increase the faster interval to four minutes, followed by a two minute recovery, for example. If you're looking for an easy workout to boost your metabolism, heart rate, and mood, grab your sneakers and give this a try. You won't regret it.
