Damson Idris Says Street Driving Is Boring Now That's He's Experienced a Formula One Car
Damson Idris is a serious actor, best known for his work in Snowfall and British films like Farming. But get him talking about cars and racing and Idris can't stop smiling… and he's especially exuberant when he's talking about his experiences making F1, in which he co-stars with Brad Pitt. Apple Original Films | Apple In the big-budget blockbuster, directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), Idris plays an up-and-coming racer Noah Pearce, who is mentored by and clashes with an aging star named Sonny Hayes, played by Brad Pitt. The movie, which opens on June 27 features appearances by top F1 drivers including Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, George Russell, Charles Leclerc, and Carlos Saenz. While those elite drivers lent verisimilitude, Idris and Pitt did their own driving as Idris discussed in a recent video conversation. What drew you to this movie? I've been a fan of Brad my whole career, and Joe's work on Top Gun Maverick made this a no-brainer. But the biggest thing for me was I knew that we were going to be filming at the real Grand Prix races. So it was like a sneaky way for me to get free tickets to every Grand Prix. ‘F1: The Movie' Reviews: Does Brad Pitt Power Formula 1 Racing Thriller?
"F1: The Movie" partial poster featuring Kerry Condon, Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem. Brad Pitt's F1: The Movie has gotten off to a roaring start with early reviews from critics. Rated PG-13, F1: The Movie isn't opening in theaters until June 27, but the review embargo for the Warner Bros. and Apple Original Films release was lifted following the film's New York City premiere on Monday night. The official summary for F1: The Movie reads, 'Dubbed 'the greatest that never was, Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was Formula 1's most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he's a nomadic racer-for-hire when he's approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling Formula 1 team that is on the verge of collapse. 'Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to Formula 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He'll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team's hotshot rookie intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny's past catches up with him and he finds that in Formula 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition — and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone.' Directed by Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski, F1 The Movie also stars Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies and Kim Bodnia. Apple Original Films and Warner Bros. said that Formula 1 the Movie was filmed during 'actual Grand Prix weekends.' As of Tuesday, F1: The Movie has received an 83% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 54 reviews. RT's Critics Consensus, Popcornmeter score with verified user ratings and an audience summary are still pending. Sophie Butcher of Empire Magazine is among the top critics on RT who is giving F1: The Movie a 'fresh' rating on RT, writing, 'Joseph Kosinski has done it again. F1 combines unparalleled access, pioneering filmmaking and moving redemption arcs to deliver an exhilarating cinematic experience. What will he attach a camera to next?' Tim Grierson of Screen International echoes Butcher's sentiments, writing in his 'fresh' summary on RT, 'Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski does for cars what he previously did for fighter jets, transforming them into balletic machines that fly through the frame with unstoppable propulsion.' David Fear of Rolling Stone compliments Brad Pitt in his 'fresh' take of F1: The Movie on RT, writing, 'This what blockbusters used to look like. Come for the most impressive, lustrous car that a gajillion-dollar budget can buy. The reason to stay, however, is the driver.' Not as impressed with the film is Nicholas Barber of the BBC, who writes in his 'rotten' review summary on RT, 'While Top Gun: Maverick was a masterpiece that pulled viewers into events in and out of the cockpit, F1 is simply a competently assembled collection of underdog sports-drama clichés. It never convinces you that its protagonists are human beings.' Kevin Maher of The Times (UK) also gave the film a 'rotten' review on RT, writing, 'There's an unashamedly 'enthusiastic' cross-promotional quality to the film, like a two-and-a-half-hour Formula 1 commercial, that never quite gels with its hoary central story.' Clarisse Loughrey of the Independent (UK) was also underwhelmed by F1: The Movie, writing in her 'rotten' review summary on RT, 'While director Joseph Kosinski and cinematographer Claudio Miranda can certainly shoot cars as well as they can planes, F1 represents the spiritually bone-dry, abrasive inverse to all of Maverick's giddy pleasures.' F1: The Movie opens in theaters in wide release on June 27.

Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo June 17 (UPI) -- Brad Pitt and his girlfriend, jewelry designer Ines de Ramon, attended the premiere of Pitt's upcoming film F1 on Monday. Ramon wore a light blue Chanel set that included a flowing halter top and pleated skirt, while Pitt sported a navy suit with black lapels and a pale pink pocket square. Pitt, 61, and Ramon, 32, have been dating since Nov. 2022, following Ramon's split from Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley in September of that year. The couple previously stepped out at the British Grand Prix, although Pitt said the outing was not planned in tandem with the release of his racing movie. "How exhausting would that be?" he said at the time. "if you're living with making those kinds of calculations? No, life just evolves. Relationships evolve." Pitt's divorce from actress Angelina Jolie was finalized in December. He shares children Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne with his ex. Simone Ashley's limited F1 role highlights Hollywood trend of sidelining actors of color
When Apple Original Films announced that Bridgerton star Simone Ashley had joined the cast of F1, fans anticipated a substantial role. Ashley was spotted filming at several Grand Prix locations, suggesting her part would be more than just a cameo. But according to early viewer reactions from recent advance screenings, Ashley's role in the final cut reportedly lasts only a few seconds. Despite on-set images showing her in multiple scenes, many—especially those featuring co-star Damson Idris—appear to have been significantly reduced. This disappointment echoes a broader issue in Hollywood: the recurring pattern of casting actors of color with fanfare, only to marginalize their presence in the final product. This issue isn't isolated to Ashley. In Top Gun: Maverick, directed by F1's Joseph Kosinski, actor Manny Jacinto underwent extensive pilot training and filmed numerous scenes. However, he later learned at the premiere that most of his scenes had been cut. Speaking to GQ, Jacinto said, 'Tom Cruise is writing stories for Tom Cruise,' pointing to how the spotlight often remains tightly controlled. Other high-profile examples include Ray Fisher's Cyborg in Justice League, whose storyline was heavily trimmed; Kiersey Clemons and Zheng Kai, whose roles were barely visible; and John Boyega in Star Wars, whose character was demoted over time and minimized on international posters. These incidents aren't just about editing—they reflect an industry that uses diverse casting in marketing while diluting representation in storytelling. As a result, actors like Ashley have taken matters into their own hands. She recently executive produced and starred in Picture This. Jacinto echoed a similar sentiment: 'We can't wait for someone else to do it. We have to make them for ourselves.' Still, the responsibility shouldn't fall solely on the actors. Until studios treat representation as integral—not optional—stories like this will keep repeating.

Apple's 'haptic trailer' for F1 The Movie offers force feedback on iPhones
Following the preview of F1: The Movie at its WWDC25 keynote, Apple has released a first-of-its-kind haptic movie trailer on the Apple TV+ app. The trailer stands out for offering synchronised haptic feedback when played on a compatible iPhone. For the uninitiated, F1: The Movie, featuring Brad Pitt, is being co-distributed by Apple Original Films, the company's in-house film production division. F1 The Movie haptic trailer: Details The two-minute trailer incorporates haptic feedback that responds to the on-screen action. For example, when an F1 car is shown in motion, the iPhone vibrates in sync—subtle vibrations occur during pit stops, such as when tyres are changed, while more intense feedback is triggered during high-speed racing or crash scenes. There's even light feedback when a driver's seatbelt is fastened. Apple refers to this concept as a 'haptic trailer.' This kind of feedback is based on 'haptics'—a tactile technology that simulates the sensation of touch using hardware components, typically a haptic motor that generates vibrations on demand. Haptic feedback has been a staple on iPhones for years. It's felt when long-pressing app icons to rearrange them, adjusting volume levels, or interacting with controls in the Control Centre—all powered by the Taptic Engine. However, this marks the first time Apple has applied the technology to enhance a movie trailer, using it as an immersive promotional tool. How to watch the 'F1: The Movie' haptic trailer Make sure your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS. Open the Apple TV+ app and look for the F1 haptic trailer on the home screen. Tap the poster and begin playback to experience the haptic-enhanced trailer.
