KUALA LUMPUR: Amid viral footage of a pupil being scolded by a teacher at a school canteen, the Education Minister has issued a reminder to teachers to be more responsible. Fadhlina Sidek (pic) also said her ministry is investigating the incident and reminded teachers about their integrity and ethics. 'We have reminded them many times, (and) there are even guidelines. They as public servants must adhere to existing ethics and (maintain) integrity. 'That's why I say they need to be reminded about this matter from time to time. Fadhlina said this after the launch and symbolic presentation of the 'Koleksi Komik Wira Anti Rasuah' (Anti-Corruption Hero Comic Collection), which was published by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books, at the World Trade Centre here yesterday, Bernama reported. Fadhlina said she has entrusted Education director-general Datuk Azman Adnan to look into the matter and remind teachers about the importance of maintaining integrity and ethics, be it within or outside classrooms as well as on social media. She also expressed regret over what happened, saying the video clip had a huge impact when it went viral. On Sunday, a video clip went viral on social media showing a pupil crying while being scolded by a teacher at a school canteen. The incident is believed to have occurred on April 14.

Education Ministry investigating claims teachers humiliated pupil

KUALA LUMPUR: The incident involving several teachers allegedly humiliating a primary school pupil in front of classmates, causing emotional distress to the child, is currently under investigation. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek expressed deep regret over the matter, particularly as footage of the incident has circulated widely, leaving a significant impact on the public. She said the ministry would take full responsibility and is giving the issue its utmost attention. "Teachers are constantly reminded of their integrity and ethics as civil servants, regardless of the situation at hand. "I firmly believe there are safer and more private avenues to ensure that any discussion or issue can be resolved appropriately," she told reporters after the launch and symbolic hand-over of the Anti-Corruption Hero Comic Collection today. The three-part comic collection is a strategic collaboration between the Malaysia Institute of Translation and Books (ITBM) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Yesterday, a video went viral showing a primary school pupil being scolded by several teachers in the school canteen, where the child was allegedly forced to admit to something the child did not do. The video was recorded and later handed over to the child's mother. Fadhlina said she had already instructed Education director-general Datuk Azman Adnan to look into the matter as it concerns the integrity and ethics of teachers. "The ministry has repeatedly reminded teachers who are also civil servants of the existing guidelines and the importance of upholding ethics and integrity, whether in the classroom, outside of it, or even on social media," she added.
