Education Ministry investigating claims teachers humiliated pupil

KUALA LUMPUR: The incident involving several teachers allegedly humiliating a primary school pupil in front of classmates, causing emotional distress to the child, is currently under investigation.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek expressed deep regret over the matter, particularly as footage of the incident has circulated widely, leaving a significant impact on the public.
She said the ministry would take full responsibility and is giving the issue its utmost attention.
"Teachers are constantly reminded of their integrity and ethics as civil servants, regardless of the situation at hand.
"I firmly believe there are safer and more private avenues to ensure that any discussion or issue can be resolved appropriately," she told reporters after the launch and symbolic hand-over of the Anti-Corruption Hero Comic Collection today.
The three-part comic collection is a strategic collaboration between the Malaysia Institute of Translation and Books (ITBM) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Yesterday, a video went viral showing a primary school pupil being scolded by several teachers in the school canteen, where the child was allegedly forced to admit to something the child did not do.
The video was recorded and later handed over to the child's mother.
Fadhlina said she had already instructed Education director-general Datuk Azman Adnan to look into the matter as it concerns the integrity and ethics of teachers.
"The ministry has repeatedly reminded teachers who are also civil servants of the existing guidelines and the importance of upholding ethics and integrity, whether in the classroom, outside of it, or even on social media," she added.

Thousands protest in Tehran and the region against Israel

Iranians wave the national flag and chant slogans next to a replica of the Dome of the Rock mosque during an anti-Israeli rally in Tehran today. – AFP photo TEHRAN (June 20): Thousands of people rallied in Tehran, Baghdad and Beirut today after Friday prayers to protest Israel's strikes on Iran, chanting slogans against Israel and its main backer, the United States. Images on Iran's state television showed protesters in Tehran holding up photographs of commanders killed since the start of the war, while others waved the flags of Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. 'This is the Friday of the Iranian nation's solidarity and resistance across the country,' the news anchor said. 'I will sacrifice my life for my leader,' read a protester's banner, referring to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to state television, protests took place in other cities around the country, including in Tabriz in northwestern Iran and Shiraz in the south. Last week, Israel launched a blistering attack on Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with barrages of missiles aimed at Israel. Mohammad Javad Haj Ali Akbari, the Imam leading Tehran's prayers, told worshippers that Israel had attacked Iran out of 'despair', the official IRNA news agency reported. He accused Israel of launching a 'psychological war' to 'pit the people of the country against the government'. 'Their plans were precise, but their calculations were laughable,' the Imam said. With warnings of all-out regional war intensifying, fears are growing over an intervention by Iran-backed Iraqi factions, who have threatened Washington's interests in the region if it were to join Israel in its war against Iran. 'No right' In Iraq, thousands of supporters of powerful cleric Moqtada Sadr rallied after Friday prayers in Baghdad and other cities, AFP correspondents said. Sadr, who has previously criticised Tehran-backed Iraqi armed factions, retains a devoted following of millions among Iraq's majority community of Shiite Muslims. 'No to Israel! No to America!' chanted demonstrators gathered in the Sadr City district of Baghdad, the cleric's stronghold in the capital. 'It is an unjust war… Israel has no right' to hit Iran, said protester Abu Hussein. 'Israel is not in it for the (Iranian) nuclear (programme). What Israel and the Americans want is to dominate the Middle East,' added the 54-year-old taxi driver. In the city of Kufa, protesters set fire to Israeli and American flags. Iraq is both a significant ally of Iran and a strategic partner of the United States. In Lebanon, hundreds of Hezbollah supporters took to the streets in the group's stronghold in Beirut's southern suburbs. Men, women and children waved the flags of Iran, Hezbollah and Lebanon, with some holding pictures of Khamenei. 'It is my duty to stand with (Iran) against the Zionist Israeli enemy,' said Adnan Zaytoun, 60. Hezbollah, which suffered heavy blows in its latest confrontation with Israel last year, has not expressed any intention to intervene militarily on Iran's side. To supporters like Zaytoun: ''if anyone attacks us, we will defend ourselves, but we do not support war.' Fadel Saad, an 18-year-old student: 'We are here to show the American and Israeli enemies that we are resilient and will not be defeated… even if they destroy our homes over our heads.' In Yemen's capital Sanaa and other areas, tens of thousands of people gathered for protests organised by the Iran-backed Huthis, according to their official media outlets. – AFP Iran Israel missile strikes protest

Najib relieved after court grants DNAA

With this, he said Najib can now concentrate fully on the 1MDB case. By NOOR AZLIDA ALIMIN 20 Jun 2025 05:14pm Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak seen at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex. - Bernama file photo KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is relieved to be free from yet another legal burden after the High Court granted him a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) over three money laundering charges involving RM27 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd. His lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, confirmed the development on Friday, stating Najib is relieved to have fewer cases weighing on him, particularly after multiple previous requests for a DNAA. The High Court here today granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak over three money laundering charges involving RM27 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd. - Bernama file photo With this, he said Najib can now concentrate fully on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case. The High Court allowed the DNAA application filed on June 11. The decision followed Najib's failed bid to have the charges dropped after the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) rejected his representation on July 31, 2023. Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul had initially requested the court to set a new date for trial. However, Shafee again pressed for a DNAA, pointing out that the case had been ongoing since 2019 with over six years of delays. When asked about the possibility of an appeal, Shafee clarified that the deputy public prosecutor cannot challenge the decision, as the prosecution retains the option to pursue the case again once they are prepared. 'Of course, we hope they do not, because this case has already prejudiced against Najib. So I hope the Attorney General will use his discretion and authority to close the case,' he said. Najib was charged on Feb 3, 2019, with receiving RM27 million from illegal proceeds through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank, Jalan Raja Chulan, on July 8, 2014. The charges were brought under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, which carries a maximum of five years in prison, a RM5 million fine, or both, upon conviction. Despite this discharge, Najib continues to serve his sentence at Kajang Prison for misappropriating RM42 million from the same SRC International fund. He began serving his sentence on Aug 23, 2022. He was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison and a RM210 million fine, which were upheld by the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court. However, a royal pardon petition filed on Sept 2, 2022, led to the Pardons Board reducing his sentence to six years and the fine to RM50 million.

Fadhlina: Education access must go beyond just physical infrastructure

PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry is actively working to ensure that access to education reaches every student, particularly those in rural and remote areas, said its minister Fadhlina Sidek. In her keynote address at the launch of the Sekolah Angkat Madani initiative today, Fadhlina said the effort should not be viewed solely from the perspective of infrastructure provision, but must instead take into account educational needs in a holistic manner. She also said that the ministry recognises the significant challenges many children face at home, including food insecurity, which makes the role of schools even more crucial in shaping their futures. "There are children who return home without the certainty of having a proper meal. "These are the realities we face, and they remind us that schools must not only be seen in terms of infrastructure, but also as holistic spaces for the development of our children," she said. Present at the launch of the initiative were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. Fadhlina added that the ministry is exploring various innovative approaches, including the implementation of floating schools, specifically to provide access to education for children in areas such as Tasik Banding, Perak. She also said that some students in these areas are unable to attend school due to geographical challenges and the high cost of transportation. As such, she said the ministry's priority remains bridging the education gap, ensuring that no child is left behind, regardless of geographical or socioeconomic barriers. "The cost of getting to school can reach up to RM30 a day for a single student. "This situation places a heavy burden on families and causes some children to drop out. If they are unable to come to school, then we must bring the school to them," she said. Fadhlina added that the initiative is part of the ministry's new approach to ensuring more inclusive access to education that reflects the actual needs of local communities. "We are identifying the best model and require the support of all parties to ensure the programme can be implemented effectively," she said. She also said education should be seen as more than just physical infrastructure and should be regarded as a comprehensive support system for student development, encompassing welfare, character building and personal growth. "We are not just building schools. We are building the future of these children, and that is what truly matters," she said.
