Amazon MGM Studios and Avid extend cloud production deal
Amazon MGM Studios and Avid began a strategic collaboration three years ago that will continue as the companies explore ways to integrate other Avid tools via the cloud. Avid has announced an expanded agreement with Amazon MGM Studios to integrate its leading creative tools—Media Composer and Avid NEXIS—into Amazon Web Services (AWS), allowing the studio's productions to leverage cloud-based editing and storage solutions tailored to their specific needs. The partnership marks a significant step in Amazon MGM Studios' long-term strategy to transform global production and post-production workflows using scalable, cloud-native technologies. A recent feature film project illustrated this capability, with dailies processed in Mumbai and editorial completed between London and Spain—showcasing seamless, cross-border collaboration and the ability to make editorial adjustments in real-time during production. The cloud automation enabled by AWS significantly reduces turnaround time, streamlining post-production operations while maintaining creative control. Robin Wright on Fighting for Equal Pay on ‘House of Cards': They Said, ‘We Can't Pay You the Same' as Kevin Spacey ‘Because You Didn't Win an Academy Award'
Robin Wright reflected on her time on 'House of Cards' at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival on Monday, saying she had to fight for equal pay on the series because she didn't have an Oscar. During a chat moderated by Variety's international features director Leo Barraclough, Wright recalled scoring a lead role on the 2013 show, which was Netflix's first big TV series. 'And look where we are now.' However, she said she had to fight for equal pay on the hit show, which she co-led with Kevin Spacey. 'Yes, it was difficult. I am going to be honest,' she said. 'When I said, 'I think it's only fair because my character became as popular as [Spacey's], they said: 'We can't pay you the same as an actor, so we will make you exec producer and you can direct. We will give you three different paychecks.' I asked, 'Why can't you pay me as an actor?' 'Because you didn't win an Academy Award.'' But being angry 'wasn't going to change anything,' Wright said. 'That has been the protocol for years — it just is. If you say, 'Why did so-and-so female not get the same amount as Will Smith?' They say, 'It will increase after you win.' Nomination, not so much,' she continued. 'Why does it have to do anything with a raise?' She also talked about that controversial ending: 'That was my idea, so… Sorry. Initially, I said: 'Let him kill her.'' However, Wright said getting to direct the show was a 'gift.' 'It was the camera operator on 'House of Cards' who said, 'Why don't you just try?'' she recalled. 'I learned so much on that show. I didn't feel any pressure. I was encouraged to do it.' She also previewed her upcoming series, Amazon MGM Studios' psychological thriller 'The Girlfriend.' 'We all collaborated together to build this tension between two women who fight for this young man,' she said. Adapted from the novel by Michelle Frances – and featuring Olivia Cooke ('House of the Dragon'), Laurie Davidson ('Mary and George') and Waleed Zuaiter ('Gangs of London') – it will see Wright as Laura, who has it all: a glittering career, a loving husband and her precious only son, Daniel (Davidson). But Laura's seemingly perfect life is blown apart when Daniel brings home Cherry (Cooke), the girlfriend who changes everything. Wright is exec-producing, directing and starring in the six-episode limited series, set to premiere in the fall. Wright will receive the Crystal Nymph Award at Monte-Carlo TV fest in recognition of her exceptional career and her enduring influence on the audiovisual industry. She first started out in TV – in the soap opera 'Santa Barbara' – before moving into film. Wright is also engaged in activism, advocating for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo and launching the charitable female sleepwear line Pour Les Femmes. She noted: 'I did it because I couldn't get any traction in Washington DC for the women of Congo. I really wanted to go to electronic companies and say: 'Can you wake up?' If you charge one dollar more for your iPhone, that dollar can go for protecting them. A lot of these women that I've met in hospitals are now doctors and lawyers.' 'Was there any pushback from DC? Yes. Congress people, they promise: 'We will get to it.' They just want to take a selfie with you.' Wright was joined on stage by Rola Bauer, executive producer for Amazon MGM Studios, who shared her philosophy when it comes to new shows: 'If you don't entertain people, they are not going to come. If it's possible, and if we can, enlighten [with these shows]. Give something back.' Later, Wright also talked about her film career including iconic titles like 'Princess Bride' and 'Forrest Gump.' 'People still ask me about these films. Only about these films.' She still has a soft spot for underseen Rebecca Miller's 'The Private Lives of Pippa Lee' – 'I wish she would work more' – but already-announced project 'Kissinger Takes Paris' with Tim Roth cast as Henry Kissinger might not see the light of the day. 'I don't think this is happening. It has been radio-silent for almost a year.' As for her biggest achievements, Wright answered: 'My children are still alive. As for my career… There's this window in your late 30s and early 40s, and there were no roles. It was dry. That's when 'House of Cards' came up. It helped me plateau for a while. I don't know if I would be able to get parts in films at the time.' Mel Brooks To Reprise As Yogurt In Amazon MGM's New ‘Spaceballs' Movie
Mel Brooks is set to reprise his role as Yogurt in Amazon MGM Studios' new Spaceballs movie, the studio announced today. Brooks, who directed and starred in the original film, had already been set to produce. Parodying Star Wars' Jedi Master Yoda, his character Yogurt is an alien who in the original served as a mentor to protagonist Lone Starr (Bill Pullman). Described by those who have not yet read the script as 'A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film,' the sequel will be released in theaters in 2027. Released by MGM in 1987, Spaceballs is an iconic send-up of the sci-fi genre, which took inspiration from the Star Wars franchise and other classics. The plot revolves around the evil Dark Helmet (Moranis) and President Skroob (Brooks), who attempt to steal the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia, only to be thwarted by the hero Lone Starr (Pullman), his sidekick Barf (John Candy), and the Druish princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga). Others in the cast included Joan Rivers and Dick Van Patten. The film grossed just over $38.1 worldwide but has endured over the years as a cult classic. The comedic icon behind such additional classics as The Producers, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, Brooks won an Oscar for his script to The Producers, receiving an additional Honorary Oscar in 2024. Over the years, he's also been recognized with a BAFTA fellowship, the AFI's Life Achievement Award, four Emmys, four Golden Globe nominations, three Grammys, multiple WGA Awards (including the Laurel Award for Screen Writing Achievement), and myriad other accolades. Most recently, he wrote on, exec produced and narrated Hulu's History of the World, Part II, a series sequel to his film History of the World, Part I from 1981. He also played himself in an episode of Only Murders in the Building and is repped by CAA and attorney Jay L. Cooper. Who's returning to 'Spaceballs' sequel? What to know about the movie
Yogurt is coming back to the big screen for a 'Spaceballs' sequel. Oscar winner Mel Brooks will reprise his role as Yogurt in Amazon MGM Studios' new "Spaceballs" movie, reports Deadline. The studio made the announcement on June 12. Brooks, who directed and starred in the original 1987 'Star Wars' and sci-fi genre parody, will also be a producer. Yogurt is an alien who mentored protagonist Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) in the first movie. There's no word on the plot, but entertainment industry publication reports the new movie is described by folks who have yet to read the script as 'A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.' Brooks isn't the only "Spaceballs" cast member returning for the sequel. Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis, reprising their respective roles as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet, will star alongside the previously announced Josh Gad, according to Deadline. Meanwhile, Keke Palmer ('One of Them Days') has joined the cast. The original movie also starred John Candy and Daphne Zuniga. The sequel will be released in theaters in 2027. Josh Greenbaum will direct. Scriptwriters are Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Other producers are Gad with Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody, Brooks and Greenbaum. Samit, Hernandez, Kevin Salter and Adam Merims will executive produce.

Viola Davis to star in thriller Ally Clark
Washington DC [US], June 6 (ANI): Actress and film producer Viola Davis, known for 'Doubt', 'The Help', 'How to Get Away with Murder', 'Widows', and others, is all set to star in the conspiracy thriller titled 'Ally Clark'. After starring in Amazon MGM Studios' action movie 'G20', Viola Davis is again teaming up with the streamer. 'G20' also features Anthony Anderson, Marsai Martin, Ramon Rodriguez, Douglas Hodge, Elizabeth Marvel, Sabrina Impacciatore, Clark Gregg, and Antony Starr. Phillip Noyce, a veteran of the thriller genre, will direct the feature that Irwin Winkler, the veteran producer behind Rocky, Goodfellas and The Alto Knights, will produce, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Winkler Films' Charlies Winker, David Winkler, and Jose Ruisanchez are also producing. Davis is also on the producing team, along with Julius Tennon, her husband and partner at the duo's JuVee Productions, as per the outlet. The script, written by Ruisanchez and Irwin Winkler, revolves around an investigator named Ally Clark, played by Davis. According to the studio, she goes on a dangerous investigation into an international conglomerate following the strange murder of a close friend. The case will take her from the marble halls of Washington, D.C., to the steamy bayous of Louisiana and the snowy peaks of Alaska. The project is in the development stages. JuVee Productions' Melanie Clark will executive produce, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Meanwhile, Davis won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for reprising her role in the 2016 film adaptation of Fences. She was Oscar-nominated for playing a complex mother in Doubt (2008), a 1960s housemaid in The Help (2011) and Ma Rainey in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020). On TV, she became the first black actress to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as lawyer Annalise Keating in the ABC legal drama series How to Get Away with Murder (2014-2020). In February 2023, she was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording for the narration of her 2022 autobiography Finding Me, making her the 18th person to achieve EGOT status.
