Mom reported 3-year-old was abducted, now she's charged with murder, MD cops say

Two people are charged in connection to the death of a 3-year-old girl in Maryland. On June 10, Darrian Randle, 31, reported to police that her 3-year-old daughter was kidnapped at gunpoint, according to a Facebook post by the New Castle County Police. Randle told officers she pulled over when her daughter Nola became upset and a man came to her vehicle with a gun and took Nola, police said. An Amber Alert was issued for the girl. However, the alert was canceled after multiple agencies began an investigation and determined Randle had lied about the abduction, according to police. Then, after further investigation, authorities found human remains in a vacant lot in North East, a June 11 news release from the Maryland State Police said. The human remains found are consistent with that of a young girl, but authorities are waiting for autopsy results to confirm if it's Nola. Randle is charged with first- and second-degree murder, first-degree child abuse resulting in death of a minor under 13, and other related charges, state police said. She is in custody at the New Castle County Division of Police awaiting extradition. Cedrick Antoine Britten, 44, is also charged. Britten is believed to be Randle's boyfriend, WBAL reported. He is charged with accessory to first- and second-degree murder after the fact, failure to report child death and other related charges, according to the Maryland State Police. Britten is in police custody in Maryland. Attorney information for Randle and Britten was unavailable. In an interview with investigators, Randle told them she beat her daughter to death, court records said, according to WCAU. 'Randle confessed to physically striking [her daughter] with a belt approximately 15 - 20 times about her body,' the station reported based on court documents. Randle said Nola was unresponsive, so she and Britten put her in Britten's car and drove around, according to court records, WCAU reported. They then went back home and put her body in a suitcase before Britten later dropped it off at a park, the court documents said. The human remains that investigators found were 'consistent with an emaciated child' and wrapped in plastic wrap, WBAL reported. 'We just can't fathom how a human being can do this to another human being,' neighbor Chad Marshall told the news outlet. 'Hopefully, they get what they deserve as far as jail time and justice is served for the little girl.'

Mother charged with murder of 3-year-old daughter after allegedly lying about child's abduction

A Maryland mother has been charged with the murder of her 3-year-old daughter after falsely reporting to police that the child was kidnapped at gunpoint, according to Maryland State Police. Darrian Randle, 31, was charged with first- and second-degree murder, first-degree child abuse resulting in the death of a minor under 13 and "other related criminal charges," police announced on Wednesday. She was also charged with filing a false police report in Delaware, according to Philadelphia ABC station WPVI. Randle previously reported to police on Tuesday that her daughter, 3-year-old Nola Dinkins, had been kidnapped at gunpoint, which led to the issuing of an Amber Alert in Newark, Delaware, police said. Information "gleaned throughout the investigation revealed the initial report provided by Randle was false" and the Amber Alert was subsequently canceled, police said in a press release. Through their search efforts, officials located human remains that are "consistent with that of a child" in a vacant lot in North East, Maryland, on Wednesday afternoon, police said. The identification of the remains -- and whether or not they are Dinkins' -- is pending autopsy results by the medical examiner, police said. Randle previously stated she and Dinkins had left her apartment complex and arrived at a dead-end road, with the child beginning to "cry for an unknown reason," according to the arrest warrant. While Randle was trying to figure out why her daughter was crying, she said an unknown black SUV with "either rust or dirt on its sides" pulled up behind Randle's vehicle, with a male voice asking if she was OK, according to the warrant. Randle replied that she was OK and then "directed her attention back to looking in her car" to her crying child, the warrant said. While she was looking inside her vehicle, she said an "unknown white male, approximately 40 years of age," wearing a black hoodie and gray shorts, exited the SUV and approached Randle's vehicle, she told police. The male once again asked if Randle was OK and then removed a "black handgun from his shorts" and pointed it at the mother and the child, according to the warrant. She told police the male said he was "not going to hurt them," but then grabbed the child, "picked her up, placing her underneath his arm" and retreated to the SUV, which was driven by a white female. At the time of the report, police issued an Amber Alert and an intensive search began overnight. The Amber Alert was canceled after police determined the mother lied to police, with the case then being investigated as a homicide, New Castle County Police said. Randle later admitted to police she was lying about the kidnapping and the suspects involved, saying she made up the report to "divert attention from her then boyfriend," who was identified as 44-year-old Cedrick Antoine Britten, police said. Britten was also arrested and charged with accessory to first- and second-degree murder, failure to report the death of the child and "other related criminal charges," police said. Randle is currently being held at the Baylor Women's Correctional Institution in Delaware, with her preliminary court hearing scheduled for June 23, according to jail records. Britten remains in police custody in Maryland awaiting transport to the Cecil County District Court for an initial appearance, police said. Additional details on what led to the murder charges have not been revealed by officials. It was not immediately clear whether Randle or Britten have attorneys who can speak on their behalf.

Fox has determined the fate of two bubble shows, canceling dramas Alert: Missing Persons Unit after three seasons and The Cleaning Lady after four. More from Deadline 2025 TV Cancellations: Photo Gallery 2025 Premiere Dates For New & Returning Series On Broadcast, Cable & Streaming Ex-'Doctor Odyssey' Crew Members Sue Disney, 20th TV Claiming Sexual Harassment And Wrongful Termination The cancellations do not come as a surprise as Alert, The Cleaning Lady as well as the other two Fox scripted series not picked up for next season, Accused and The Great North, sit at the bottom of the network's 2024-25 season rankings. Animated comedy The Great North also is expected to be canceled once its current fifth season ends later this month. As for anthology Accused, developed and executive produced by Howard Gordon, it might come back in the future for a limited run as an event, Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network, said last month. RELATED: 'We love the show and Howard Gordon,' he said. 'As you know, it's anthological, which means it doesn't have the same timetable on renewals as shows that have locked casts. And so right now, we're talking with Howard if there's an opportunity down the line to eventize a return, something that can really work for us and Howard, we'd love to do it. Right now. there's no plan, but there could be down the line.' All four series are Fox Entertainment co-productions with outside lead studios, Warner Bros. TV (The Cleaning Lady), Sony Pictures TV (Alert, Accused) and 20th Television Animation (The Great North). With Sony TV, Fox also has its breakout new medical drama series Doc, which is coming back in the fall for a 22-episode season; Warner Bros. TV is behind Fox's upcoming thriller drama Memory of a Killer. According to sources, Fox explored continuing Alert, possibly with some retooling, as the network brass liked Scott Caan as a leading man and the show's evolution into a buddy-cop show. Ultimately, the ratings were not there. RELATED: The Cleaning Lady, headlined by Élodie Yung, underwent creative retooling heading into this season after the series faced the tragic loss of its male lead Adan Canto to cancer. The drama never regained its footing but maintained a passionate core fan base that is left with loose ends and unresolved issues in the Season 4 finale. Alert: Missing Persons Unit is set in the Philadelphia Police Department's Missing Persons Unit. Each episode featured a search for a missing person headed by detectives Jason Grant (Caan) and Nikki Batista (Dania Ramirez). Together with the MPU team, their job is to find the missing or abducted and reunite them with their loved ones. Adeola Role, Ryan Broussard and Alisha-Marie Ahamed also starred. Carla Kettner served as showrunner and executive producer, with Jon Cowan, Brandon Sonnier, Brandon Margolis, Sean Hennen, John Eisendrath, Jamie Foxx, Datari Turner and Brad Turner also executive producing. RELATED: The Cleaning Lady, the first Southeast Asian-led broadcast drama, centers on Thony De La Rosa (Yung), a Cambodian-Filipino former surgeon who makes a living as a cleaning service worker alongside her sister-in-law, Fiona (Martha Millan). After witnessing a murder, Thony is offered a job both as a cleaner and a doctor within a criminal organization that could pay well enough to help her son and her family. Kate Del Castillo, Santiago Cabrera, Sean Lew, Faith Bryant, and Khalen Roman Sanchez also starred in the series, based on an Argentine format, which was developed for American television by Miranda Kwok.
