Floral Clock is bloomin' lovely this year

The Floral Clock in Princes Street Gardens is all spruced up and looking lovely now that the council's parks department have created the 2025 display which commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB). The Rt Hon Lord Provost was joined by representatives from RNIB and visually impaired members of the community to mark the completion of the new design, which takes three gardeners around six weeks to create. More than 35,000 flowers and plants are used to create the face of the clock, which will be in bloom until October. This includes plants like antennaria, crassula, echevaria, sedum and saxifrage and annuals such as pyrethrum, begonias and geraniums. Edinburgh's Lord Provost Robert Aldridge said: 'Seeing the floral clock take shape is a wonderful annual tradition and this year doesn't disappoint, with a beautiful display in honour of a worthwhile cause. 'The RNIB provides essential support to blind and visually impaired people, and in 2025 they mark a real milestone with the 200th anniversary of braille. I hope the clock's design will give people pause to reflect on just how important braille is to all those to use it. 'Thanks to the hard-working parks team who have spent the past six weeks creating the clock, which will be enjoyed by many thousands of people throughout summer. 'The RNIB is the UK's leading sight loss charity which offers practical and emotional support to blind and partially sighted people, their families and carers. 'This year, the RNIB is marking the 200th anniversary of the invention of braille, a code based on six dots used to represent the alphabet and numbers.' James Adams, Director of RNIB Scotland, said: 'It is a great honour that RNIB has been chosen for this year's floral clock. It marks the 200th anniversary of the invention of braille which opened up opportunity for blind and partially sighted people to be able to access the written word, and with that came the liberation of being able to also receive information that is taken for granted by wider society. 'Braille is a system that endures, and continues to transform the lives of blind and partially sighted people, offering them privacy, independence, and opportunity. RNIB was brought into existence to improve tactile literacy and we still work every day to widen access for blind and partially sighted people. 'Therefore, we are delighted to have Braille200 so prominently marked in the heart of Edinburgh and give everyone the opportunity to celebrate Braille and include accessibility in their lives.' This is the oldest floral clock in the world and was first made in 1903. Floral Clock official opening Edinburgh Princes Street Gardens. Injured walker airlifted to hospital after incident at Edinburgh beauty spot

ISLAND DRAMA Injured walker airlifted to hospital after incident at Edinburgh beauty spot Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AN INJURED walker had to be airlifted off a Scots beauty spot after falling and injuring herself. The woman was out for a walk on Cramond Island near Edinburgh when she took a tumble earlier today. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Emergency services at the scene of the incident. As well as the helicopter a lifeboat also raced to the scene. One onlooker, who declined to be named, said: 'When I saw the helicopter hovering above the water I thought that maybe a swimmer was in difficulty. 'Then I saw the ambulance crews and Coastguard teams walking across to the island. 'As I got closer to the helicopter I watched as the helicopter winched someone in a stretcher. 'They then landed on the beach and the paramedics went in and moved the woman to an ambulance.' Several emergency response vehicles were parked at the end of the causeway that leads to the island as rescuers dealt with the emergency. It's understood the walker did not suffer serious injuries. Cramond Island can be reached by low tide via a causeway. However, once high tide arrives, people on the tidal island no longer have a safe passage back to the mainland and get stuck on the island, or on the causeway. In recent years the RNLI have launched campaigns to make people aware of the dangers. Volunteers at RNLI lifeboat stations based at Queensferry and Kinghorn, Fife typically respond to call outs at Cramond Causeway. In 2024, Queensferry RNLI Lifeboat Station launched 81 times, aiding 130 people caught in difficulty in the water, and Kinghorn RNLI Lifeboat Station launched 58 times, saving 2 lives and aiding 31 people. A spokesperson from HM Coastguard said: 'We attended to assist the Scottish Ambulance Service. 'As well as a Lifeboat from Kinghorn we tasked a mobile rescue team and a rescue helicopter from Prestwick. 'We recovered the casualty to an ambulance.' The Scottish Ambulance Service was approached for comment.

Gang war detectives recover firearm in Roseburn Path area

Officers carrying out enquiries into recent violent incidents in the East and West of the country have recovered a firearm in the Roseburn Path area of Edinburgh. The path had been cordoned off between the footbridge at Roseburn Terrace up to Ravelston Dykes since the evening of Thursday 5 June. Officers would not divulge the reason for the closure of the popular path other than to say that it was due to an 'ongoing incident'. Today Wednesday, 11 June, detectives revealed that a weapon had been found around 11am this morning as part of Operation Portaledge. The 77th Edinburgh Taxi Outing sets off

The 77th Edinburgh Taxi Outing is taking place on Tuesday. The outing is organised and paid for by the taxi drivers themselves and offers a fun day out for children with additional needs, life-limiting conditions and terminal illnesses. The taxis are all decorated with balloons or as floats and assembled this morning at the car park at Edinburgh Zoo for judging and presentation of prizes. The procession of cabs then left the car park under Police escort to make its way through the city and along the coast to Archerfield Walled Garden (between Gullane and Dirleton, East Lothian) with a stop outside Luca's in Musselburgh to refill the water tanks and to eat as much ice cream as possible. Our galleries of photos from the Zoo car park and on Princes Street show just a few of the day's fun moments.
