Glasgow to introduce new tourist tax that's almost £5 a night – but locals won't be happy

Read on to see who has to pay the tax CASHING IN Glasgow to introduce new tourist tax that's almost £5 a night – but locals won't be happy GLASGOW City Council is set to introduce a new tourist tax at around £5 per night - but locals won't be happy. The visitor levy will be brought in from January 25, 2027 and will see people pay five per cent of the cost of a hotel room, B&B, AirBnB or hostels per night. The money raised will be spent on public services, like street sweeping, investing in city landmarks, and improvements to parks, to improve the city for residents and visitors alike. Councillors approved the levy at the city administration committee yesterday morning. The tax will be in place for anyone staying at a hotel in the city - and this includes locals with a Glasgow postcode. Advertisement Speaking out against the tax following the decision was Reform councillor Thomas Kerr. The party also hit out on social media saying: "Glasgow City Council approves tourist tax - even for locals!" Mr Kerr added on X: "I've never believed a tourist tax was the right policy for Glasgow. "This tax risks pricing out families, hurting local B&Bs and deterring much‑needed tourism just as our city recovers. Advertisement "The council is skint, but penalising guests isn't the answer." Hitting back at Reform's comments, Scottish Labour's MSP fro Glasgow Paul Sweeney said: "I have only ever stayed overnight in a hotel in Glasgow once - it was for an assessment centre for the BAE graduate scheme. I didn't pay for it. Moment hardcore anti tourist mob surround Brit tourists in Majorca chanting 'go home' & telling Brit ex-pats to 'go to hell' "How many Glaswegians are staying over at a hotel in the city they live in? A completely ridiculous argument." Scottish Greens MSP for Glasgow, Patrick Harvie said: "Glasgow is a global city, drawing visitors from all over the world. Advertisement "But we have seen how over-tourism can damage communities, like in Venice and Barcelona, where the residents end up paying the price. "The tourist tax is vital to delivering sustainable tourism where local residents feel the benefit of our tourism and events sectors. "I'm delighted that Glasgow is continuing to benefit from Green policy in action." Advertisement In January, Edinburgh was the first council in Scotland to bring in a tourist tax, boosting city coffers by up to £50million. Labour leader of the capital's council, Jane Meagher, labelled the cash the 'single biggest injection of new funding this side of the millennium'.

Jay Slater's friend breaks silence over knives 'stuffed into pants'

A friend of tragic teen Jay Slater has revealed where he got the two knives he armed himself with before his dead body was discovered at bottom of Tenerife ravine. The 19-year-old from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, vanished on his first ever trip abroad in June last year to attend a music festival on the Spanish Island with pals. After an extensive month-long search involving helicopter crews, search dogs and drones, Jay's remains were discovered in steep, rocky terrain near the remote village of Masca. Now a year on, his close friend Lucy Law, who joined him on the holiday, has made a bombshell claim that the teenager stuffed two knives into his pants for "protection" on the night he vanished - and revealed where he got them from. In a podcast released by celebrity investigator Mark Williams-Thomas, Lucy shared a first-hand account of what happened in the lead up to Jay vanishing, along with Ayub Qassim, the convicted drug dealer who Jay accompanied back to an AirBnB in Masca after attending the NRG music festival. Lucy claims police in Tenerife "weren't taking me seriously" when she first reported the teenager missing. The Irish Mirror's Crime Writers Michael O'Toole and Paul Healy are writing a new weekly newsletter called Crime Ireland. Click here to sign up and get it delivered to your inbox every week She said Jay was "going on a mission" the night before his disappearance - and then sent a photo to a friend the following day which showed him carrying knives he found at his Airbnb in Masca. "On the night before, when I was still awake, before we went home, he messaged me saying 'I'm going on a mission', then I've gone home, tried to find him…," she told Mark Williams-Thomas. 'Woke up to the call from Brandon in the morning 'oh my God he's in the mountains, trying to walk…. He's said 'can't go back there, can't go back there' (referring to the Airbnb rental where he had stayed)." Lucy then spoke to Jay and told him: "Go back to where you came from, do you know anything about where you are?" She then talked to Josh, who was a friend of Jay and staying in Tenerife, who had received the photo of the teenager carrying the knives. Lucy said that Jay had met Josh on the plane to the holiday island. "He sent the video to Josh," said Lucy, of the footage showing Jay with the knives. "Took the kitchen knives from the Airbnb and put them down his pants, lifted his top up and shown it to him 'Just in case anything kicks off'. I'm like…" She added: "It could have just been a coincidence but with him also saying about going on a mission..." It came after Jay bragged about snatching a £12,000 AP watch while "off his undies". In a Snapchat post, he boasted: "Just took a 12k rolly off some c*** wi this Mali kid off to get 10quid for it now haha off my undies." Another Snapchat, sent at a similar time, read: "Yes cuz ended up getting thrown out of there me with 2 maili kids just took an AP off some c*** on way to sell it for 10 quid." At 7am, Jay sent a 13-second video of himself smoking a cigarette outside an Airbnb, taking in the mountain view. Minutes later, he filmed a final, seven-second clip showing the rugged landscape. Police later geolocated the footage to Masca - the same area where his body was eventually found. The teenager had been driven to the Airbnb by Britons Ayub Qassim and Steven Roccas. An inquest into Jay's death was last month adjourned after his mum Debbie pleaded for more witnesses to come forward. She said: "We want these people to be sat in front of us, because our son went on holiday and didn't come back, so there's questions we need to ask." A number of witnesses were asked to give evidence at the hearing at Preston Coroner's Court but were either not traced or were unable to attend despite extensive efforts, the court was told. The group included Ayub Qassim and Lucy Law, whose stepfather Andy Davis said she had no idea that the inquest was taking place.

Terrifying moment driver catapults holidaymakers into air after row over AirBnB - as he is jailed

By AirBnB rental. Johnathan Newbury, 33, was yesterday jailed for ten years for ploughing his SUV into pedestrians Ryan Jones, 18, and a 17-year-old boy. He had armed himself with a zombie knife and was 'intent on violence' during the car attack in July last year, a court heard. The row broke out after Newbury discovered the AirBnB he had rented for the weekend in Cardiff, Wales, had accidently been double booked. Newbury and his friend Elliott Fiteni, 23, were already inside the property when Mr Jones and the teenager turned up for their own stay. Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard Newbury began hurling threats at the pair, shouting 'I'll f*** you up' through a window. He then hunted the men in a black SUV before mowing them down in the street. Newbury then fled the scene as the victims were left on the ground with serious injuries. Mr Jones suffered injuries to his pelvis and right foot while the teenager lost consciousness and sustained injuries to his jaw, ribs, chest and abdomen. Mr Wilson said the row had started over the booking made in the Cathays area of Cardiff in July of last year where Newbury was due to stay with friend Elliot Fiteni. He said: 'Mr Jones, [...] and another friend had booked an Airbnb on Bruce Street called the Comfortable Stay. 'By chance, a booking had been made at the same address on behalf of Mr Fiteni, who accepted he stayed at the address along with Mr Newbury. 'They were already at the building when Mr Jones and [...] walked towards it.' Newbury, of Cardiff, was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article. Judge Jeremy Jenkins Newbury 'You were present at an AirBnB at Bruce Street in Cardiff, the two complainants [...] and Mr Jones had also booked accommodation at the same address and there had been an earlier altercation.' The judge said Newbury had then been part of a group 'armed with what has been described as a zombie knife' and 'intent on violence'. He said: 'The clear aim was to attack [...] and Mr Jones, both ran away from the scene.' Judge Jenkins said Newbury was the driver of the SUV which was 'seen to speed up, to drive on the wrong side of the road into the junction and to deliberately collide with the two men, throwing them up in the air.' Newbury was handed an extended sentence of 10 years and told he must serve at least five years and four months behind bars.

Airbnb Inc (ABNB) Comes From An 'Era' Of Winners, Says Jim Cramer

Airbnb Inc (NASDAQ:ABNB) is one of the . Airbnb Inc (NASDAQ:ABNB) is a hospitality provider whose shares are up by a modest 3% year-to-date. The stock has suffered amidst a selloff in the broader travel industry due to economic concerns. Cramer has called the selloff the end of a 'travel bull market' and bemoaned the end of one sector that had performed well in 2025's early months. Since their February peak, Airbnb Inc (NASDAQ:ABNB)'s shares have lost 16%. Cramer's previous comments about the stock have speculated that the dip is part of a self-fulfilling prophecy which means that people start selling once they start believing a stock will fall. His latest remarks were quite upbeat: 'But these . . .companies, along with . . .AirBnB, they came from a particular era of IPO. Of winners. And these are all ones I'd buy.' Cramer discussed Airbnb Inc (NASDAQ:ABNB) in detail after the firm's Q1 earnings. Here's what he said: 'One of the things that came up on the AirBnb call last night, we'll see that stock down, is that travel bull market over. I mean we know Booking's didn't have a perfect number. A vacation home luxury bedroom setup with stunning decor showing a desired getaway experience. 'I just think that the issue with AirBnb is just that as long as hotels are very expensive, then you go AirBnb. Brian's gotta stick to that script. And I like him so much I'm joking about obviously, but he does have this kind of bent about him to find the negatives. I would have come up with the other, which is that boy I'll tell you, if we do have a slowdown, remember how well we do. And remember even in COVID people used to go from one place to another. My daughter she was teaching English in Spain. On the weekends, she would go from one part of Spain to another cause that's what you did! That's gonna come back. Brian's gotta get a little more positive.'
