Hamilton Accies goalkeeper exits after frustrating spell

Daily Record10-06-2025

Charlie Albinson joins Reghan Tumilty, Sean McGinty and Nikolay Todorov out the door at Accies
Hamilton Accies have parted company with goalkeeper Charlie Albinson as boss John Rankin gets set to begin preparations for their League One campaign.
The Accies boss will return from holiday tomorrow and it is expected the club will be able to finalise their list of retained and released players in the coming days.

Lanarkshire Live Sport understands Albinson, 28, had a relegation release clause in his contract and is already working on a move to a new club. He joins a list of players to be released in the last few weeks, including SPFL Trust Trophy final hero Reghan Tumilty. Defender Sean McGinty has left to join local rivals Airdrieonians and striker Nikolay Todorov has also departed.

Englishman Albinson joined Accies from Ayr United last summer and made 21 appearances. He fell out of favour at New Douglas Park and his last outing for the club came back on January 28 in a 3-0 home defeat to Raith Rovers.
Where Hamilton Accies are playing league games next season is yet to be confirmed with the SPFL still to ratify the club's tenancy agreement with North Lanarkshire Council to play at Broadwood Stadium on a temporary basis. Accies announced in May they were leaving New Douglas Park after failing to secure a deal to buy the stadium from its current owners.
Accies will play their 'home' games in the Premier Sports Cup next month at K-Park in East Kilbride after a deal was struck to host matches there while a new pitch is laid at Broadwood over the next few weeks.
Rankin's men are due to travel to Lowland League side Caledonian Braves on June 20 for their first pre-season friendly, the same day the SPFL fixtures will be released. The clash is one of four pre-season friendlies planned although a full list hasn't yet been released by the club. Bellshill Athletic have announced they will play an Accies XI on Wednesday, July 9.

Inside crunch SPFL talks as David Martindale reveals Livingston were ORDERED to rip up their plastic pitch

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DAVIE MARTINDALE has revealed Livi were ordered to ditch their much-maligned pitch. The Lions booked an immediate return to the Premiership by seeing off Ross County in last month's play-offs. While the timing has surprised some, Martindale insists his club weren't given a choice by the SPFL. Martindale said: "The season only finished a few weeks ago and we didn't have much choice. "There was a meeting between ourselves and the SPFL and we were told that if we were getting promoted, we'd need to lift our pitch and replace it. "So we've had a six-week window to try and source a training facility and a playing facility. "Naturally, that's going to have to be an artificial surface. "There's no way on earth we could put a grass pitch down, because where would we have trained? And the academy team and the women's teams? "It wasn't until we knew we were going up that we knew we had to change our surface. "It was all very last minute. I think long-term, we'll need to look at the strategy. "But right now, getting told we had to lift our surface and we had to have a new surface to be in the Premiership, there wasn't a lot of choice to be honest." Livingston boss David Martindale opens his heart on life before, during and after prison.. and the managers he admires most Livi were yesterday handed a difficult opening day trip to Rugby Park to take on Stuart Kettlewell's Killie on their top-flight return. The two clubs will also face off in Ayrshire in the Premier Sports Cup group stage. Martindale told Sky Sports: "We'll be fairly familiar with each other by the opening day! "It's good to be back into the Premiership and it'll be interesting. "There's been a lot of change in the year we've been away so we're looking forward to it." Rangers boss Russell Martin begins Premiership reign with trip to Motherwell

Martin's first William Hill Premiership match in charge will see him go head to head with former Norwich team-mate Jens Berthel Askou, who was recently installed as Motherwell manager. The fixture will kick off at 5.30pm on Saturday, August 2 and will mark the weekend of the 130th anniversary of the first game at Fir Park. There is only one Premiership game taking place at 3pm on the Saturday, which sees Stuart Kettlewell start his Kilmarnock reign with the visit of newly-promoted Livingston. Falkirk end their 15-year absence from the top flight with a home game against Dundee United the following afternoon in one of four matches to be screened live by Sky Sports over the opening fixture card. Former Hearts captain Steven Pressley begins his first league campaign as Dundee head coach at home to Hibernian on the Sunday, following the Leith club's Europa League tie with Midtjylland. Champions Celtic will unfurl the league flag later that day ahead of hosting St Mirren in a 4.30pm kick-off. Hearts and Aberdeen fans will need to wait until 8pm on the Monday to see their teams start the season at Tynecastle as new head coach Derek McInnes begins his Premiership campaign at home against one of his former clubs. Martin's first league game at Ibrox will kick off at 5.30pm on August 9 with Dundee the visitors in a game to be shown live by Premier Sports. Celtic have the chance to atone for their Scottish Gas Scottish Cup final defeat by Aberdeen when they travel to Pittodrie the following day for a 12.30pm kick-off. There are no league games in the third weekend of August with the second round of the Premier Sports Cup taking place. Rangers head coach Martin will experience his first derby in charge on Sunday, August 31, when Celtic visit Ibrox for a noon showdown. The festive schedule is slightly less hectic than usual with only one midweek slot rather than the usual two. Six matches are scheduled for Saturday, December 27, including an Edinburgh derby at Easter Road, which has been earmarked for live television coverage at 12.30pm. There is a full fixture card three days later with Celtic travelling to Fir Park before hosting Rangers in a 12.30pm kick-off on Saturday, January 3. All teams – including a Dundee derby at Tannadice – play that afternoon. There are six midweek fixture dates in total including two in succession in early February, either side of the Scottish Cup fifth round. The final games before the split are pencilled in for April 11, when St Mirren will be aiming to seal a fourth consecutive top-six finish when they travel to Celtic Park. As in recent seasons, there is a full midweek card in the final week of the season, which ends on May 17-18. The SPFL season in general will kick off on Friday, August 1 when Arbroath return to the Championship with a home game against Ayr United. St Johnstone return to second-tier football with a home game against Partick Thistle the following day and will face fellow relegated side Ross County in the second weekend of the season. East Kilbride's first SPFL game will see Spartans visit K-Park in a League 2 encounter on August 2.

Wrexham's James McClean speaks out on scary car crash – 'Smoke was everywhere'

Wrexham captain James McClean has opened up on the car crash he was involved in on his way to training earlier this year and how he was lucky to escape unscathed Wrexham skipper James McClean has recounted the harrowing moment he narrowly escaped severe injury following a car crash. The ex- Republic of Ireland star was driving to training on January 22 when his Audi RS6 hit a roundabout near Wrexham Golf Club. Despite extensive damage to his vehicle, the 36-year-old walked away from the accident with only minor injuries after being checked over as emergency services attended the scene. In an astonishing show of resilience, McClean didn't let the scare stop him and made it to training later that day once his car was removed. ‌ He even took to the pitch for Wrexham 's important League One match against Birmingham City at the Racecourse Ground the next night, which ended in a 1-1 draw. McClean has now opened up about the incident, acknowledging he was fortunate to avoid more serious consequences. ‌ Discussing the ordeal during the latest instalment of the ' Welcome to Wrexham ' docuseries, McClean said: "It was a really foggy morning and it was hard to see. I thought I had more road than I did. I came out from behind a lorry and the roundabout just appeared. "For the next five seconds it was just a blur. Then the car stopped and there's all this smoke coming out of the car. The door was quite wedged and I was banging it to get it open." Reflecting on the seriousness of the incident, he added: "I just see it as there's bigger things ahead for me and it just wasn't my time. I was saved that day. It was a scary experience, but it just shows you how quickly things can change." McClean's wife Erin also expressed her alarm upon hearing about the accident via a text from her husband, with whom she shares four children. "I got a message from James saying he'd just been in a crash and he sent me a picture of the car," she said. "I didn't believe it. "My heart just started racing and then I rang him straight away. He answered and I was like, 'Are you hurt?' He was like, 'I'm actually okay.' I just jumped in the car and went straight to Wrexham. He came out and was like, 'I'm going to training.'" ‌ McClean previously exposed the vile taunts that Erin faced online after the accident. Taking to Instagram following his appearance against Birmingham, he posted: "Now that the game is out of the way, to address yesterday. An experience I never wish to encounter again. "I am blessed and thankful I managed to walk away with minor injuries and return home to my family, though much to the disappointment of some smelly scruffy pathetic creatures that messaged my wife online. Thank you for the messages of support." McClean made the move to Wrexham from Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed sum in the summer of 2023, having previously played in the Premier League with Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion. He has been instrumental in helping the club, which is owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, secure automatic promotion in the past two seasons, propelling them from League Two to the Championship.
