GenAI disrupts software ADM market, 10-15% of IT services revenue at risk

As the debate continues over the revenue-generating potential of generative AI (GenAI), one thing is becoming increasingly clear: its impact on the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) — and by extension, Application Development and Maintenance (ADM) — is already being felt in measurable ways. According to a report from Motilal Oswal Financial Services, ADM, which makes up an estimated 35–45 per cent of the IT services industry's revenue, is emerging as ground zero for GenAI's most immediate and tangible productivity gains. For IT services firms, this translates to a structural challenge. "Our research suggests an approximately 40 per cent productivity gain from enterprise-wide implementation of GenAI Copilot, putting about 10-15 per cent of IT services revenues at risk,' wrote the report's authors Abhishek Pathak, Keval Bhagat, and Tushar Dhonde. Another report from Kotak Institutional Equites also added that adoption of AI has increased in select use cases. The report also noted that efficiencies from AI adoption in use cases such as software engineering can be significant. 'Copilot with GitHub and Claude are commonly used tools for coding. Use cases are pretty high in application services (both development and maintenance), content generation and BPO services. Clients are not resisting usage of generative AI tools due to concerns around the technology; instead, they are encouraging vendors to adopt generative AI in such use cases,' the Kotak report pointed out. Some of the work within SDLC that is being immediately impacted includes low-level coding or routine feature work, code review and testing, debugging & incident response, and security fixes. In a recent story by Business Standard on impact of AI on testing, it was found that as more and more code is being written by AI, it has raised questions about the future of traditional testing engineers, establishing the need for them to reskill quickly to stay relevant. Motilal Oswal's analysis noted that GenAI tools like Copilot drive around 55 per cent efficiency in repetitive coding tasks, translating to 11 per cent of total ADM hours saved. Similarly, automated suggestions and AI-generated test cases reduce effort by about 40 per cent, resulting in overall time savings of 8 per cent. The findings were discussed in a recent industry session featuring Saurabh Gupta from HFS Research, who emphasised that the days of relying on anecdotal GenAI success stories are over. 'Large enterprises are encountering the law of diminishing returns. The limits of offshoring have been reached, and jumping into a new "S-curve" of value creation is increasing,' he said. In the near term, companies that fail to deploy GenAI internally at scale risk being undercut by more efficient rivals. But in the long run, the bigger question is how the industry can reinvent itself when one of its largest revenue pools becomes significantly less labour-intensive. Analysts also highlighted that the current shift towards AI is replicating the shift the industry went through from legacy to digital. The industry is facing productivity and pricing pressure in the ADM and core IT services, but the revenue uplift from GenAI is yet to happen.

Drone threat persists, sparks smuggling fears on Western border

Gandhinagar: While India thwarted more than 600 aerial attacks involving drones and missiles from Pakistan along the Gujarat and Rajasthan borders during the recent military conflict, the residents of the border areas are concerned that the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by Pakistan may eventually open up a new smuggling route for contraband. On Saturday, Abhishek Pathak, inspector general of the Border Security Force Gujarat Frontier, which covers the international boundary between India and Pakistan along Gujarat and Munabao, Barmer, in Rajasthan, told the media that the security agencies foiled more than 600 drone attacks from Pakistan during this period, out of which about 40% attacks were targeted at Gujarat. Significantly, drones continued to be dispatched from across the border after the declaration of ceasefire between India and Pakistan. A villager told ET on condition of anonymity that the movement of flying objects from Pakistan continued several days after the ceasefire. "These movements have been rather frequent," he said, adding that unless checked, it might open up a smuggling route for contraband in the area. Munabao and its adjoining areas have rarely reported smuggling of contraband in recent years as the border is well-guarded. On the contrary, there has been a spurt in narcotics smuggling through the sea route. Live Events Speaking from Jamnagar, a senior member of the state security apparatus said that a Pakistani drone had reached the coastal town during the recent clash. "Not just the Rajasthan border, the drones can reach here as well and there is every possibility that they would be used for dropping contraband sooner than later," said the person.

India thwarted over 600 missiles, drone attacks on Gujarat Frontier; 40% of them in state itself: BSF IG

More than 600 aerial attacks in the form of missiles and drones were thwarted by security forces on the southern end of India's border with Pakistan, comprising Bhuj sector in Gujarat and Barmer sector in Rajasthan, earlier this month, Abhishek Pathak, the Inspector General (IG) of the Gujarat Frontier of the Border Security Force (BSF), said on Friday. The Indian forces either destroyed or forced the missiles and drones to turn back with no harm caused to civilians and no damage to infrastructure, the IG said during a press conference held by the BSF at the Gujarat Frontier Headquarters in Gandhinagar. The Gujarat Frontier of the BSF, part of its Western Command, is responsible for maintaining watch over the Bhuj Sector and the Barmer Sector. When asked by The Indian Express to share a break-up of the number of attempted attacks over the skies of Gujarat itself, IG Pathak said, 'About 40% of the attacks were in Gujarat while the rest were in the Barmer sector (of Rajasthan).' When asked about the type of drones and missiles deployed by Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, IG Pathak said the investigation was still underway into their make and type. IG Pathak said that Pakistan had even deployed tanks and heavy artillery at the border. He said everything was being analysed to 'improve our response next time'. 'We learnt that Pakistan had not only increased manpower along the border, but also deployed heavy artillery and tanks in forward areas. In view of this situation, the BSF along with the Army, the Navy and the Air Force completed its preparations and officials also visited border areas to brief the personnel and review the preparations,' Pathak said. Speaking about BSF's preparations, Pathak said Gujarat Frontier had deployed 'high-calibre weapons and surveillance equipment' at all the border posts after getting inputs about Pakistan army's mobilisation. Regarding the intruder from Pakistan who was shot and killed on May 23 while attempting to cross the international border, IG Pathak said that according to the Rules of Engagement (ROE), he was challenged and asked to stop his advance but he did not, leading to the BSF troops firing and killing him on the spot. 'We have shared his photograph with Pakistan. We did not find any identification documents on his person and we are still waiting to see whether they (Pakistan) will claim his body,' said Pathak.
