GenAI disrupts software ADM market, 10-15% of IT services revenue at risk
As the debate continues over the revenue-generating potential of generative AI (GenAI), one thing is becoming increasingly clear: its impact on the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) — and by extension, Application Development and Maintenance (ADM) — is already being felt in measurable ways.
According to a report from Motilal Oswal Financial Services, ADM, which makes up an estimated 35–45 per cent of the IT services industry's revenue, is emerging as ground zero for GenAI's most immediate and tangible productivity gains.
For IT services firms, this translates to a structural challenge. "Our research suggests an approximately 40 per cent productivity gain from enterprise-wide implementation of GenAI Copilot, putting about 10-15 per cent of IT services revenues at risk,' wrote the report's authors Abhishek Pathak, Keval Bhagat, and Tushar Dhonde.
Another report from Kotak Institutional Equites also added that adoption of AI has increased in select use cases. The report also noted that efficiencies from AI adoption in use cases such as software engineering can be significant.
'Copilot with GitHub and Claude are commonly used tools for coding. Use cases are pretty high in application services (both development and maintenance), content generation and BPO services. Clients are not resisting usage of generative AI tools due to concerns around the technology; instead, they are encouraging vendors to adopt generative AI in such use cases,' the Kotak report pointed out.
Some of the work within SDLC that is being immediately impacted includes low-level coding or routine feature work, code review and testing, debugging & incident response, and security fixes. In a recent story by Business Standard on impact of AI on testing, it was found that as more and more code is being written by AI, it has raised questions about the future of traditional testing engineers, establishing the need for them to reskill quickly to stay relevant.
Motilal Oswal's analysis noted that GenAI tools like Copilot drive around 55 per cent efficiency in repetitive coding tasks, translating to 11 per cent of total ADM hours saved. Similarly, automated suggestions and AI-generated test cases reduce effort by about 40 per cent, resulting in overall time savings of 8 per cent.
The findings were discussed in a recent industry session featuring Saurabh Gupta from HFS Research, who emphasised that the days of relying on anecdotal GenAI success stories are over. 'Large enterprises are encountering the law of diminishing returns. The limits of offshoring have been reached, and jumping into a new "S-curve" of value creation is increasing,' he said.
In the near term, companies that fail to deploy GenAI internally at scale risk being undercut by more efficient rivals. But in the long run, the bigger question is how the industry can reinvent itself when one of its largest revenue pools becomes significantly less labour-intensive.
Analysts also highlighted that the current shift towards AI is replicating the shift the industry went through from legacy to digital. The industry is facing productivity and pricing pressure in the ADM and core IT services, but the revenue uplift from GenAI is yet to happen.

Capillary Technologies' DRHP highlights rising competition, AI impact on business
Customer engagement and loyalty tech provider Capillary Technologies' draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) highlights increasing competition to acquire and retain enterprise customers amid increasing impact of artificial intelligence (AI), challenging macroeconomic conditions and changing market dynamics. The Bengaluru-headquartered company filed its DRHP with the Securities and Exchanges Board of India on June 18, after it shelved its initial plans in 2021. It is looking to raise Rs 430 crore through its initial public offering this year. The company reported revenue of Rs 598 crore for 2024-25, up 13.9% from Rs 525 crore in the previous financial year, according to data from the DRHP. Enterprise customer retention Capillary Technologies lost three customers in 2022-23 and one each in 2023-24 and 2024-25. In the case of large enterprise customers, it is facing competition from firms that offer similar services targeting enterprise customers as they cut costs, restructure and develop products in-house. 'While the afore-mentioned instances did not materially impact our financial condition, we cannot assure you that our business, financial condition and results of operations will not be adversely affected in the future due to such instances,' the DRHP said. The AI impactIn the DRHP, the company said that AI – which has been mentioned 81 times, compared to 18 times in the draft red herring prospectus filed in 2021 – is complex and rapidly evolving, and that it faces significant competition in the market and from other companies regarding such technologies.'The adoption of Gen AI by various industries could lead to changes in our customers' operations. By adopting Gen AI, our customers may develop in-house capabilities which could impact the extent to which customers rely on us and reduce their need for our services,' it addition, the company said it is incorporating AI in its solutions and business operations. 'Our research and development of such technology remains ongoing. AI presents risks, challenges, and unintended consequences that could affect our and our customers' adoption and use of this technology,' it said. R&D, acquisitions To maintain its competitive edge, the company has been investing significantly in AI. It invested 21.50% of its revenue in 2024-25, lower than 28.04% in the previous fiscal in research, design and development. According to the DRHP, the company will invest Rs 151 crore in research and development. It will also focus on inorganic growth through acquisitions to enter new business areas as a strategic initiative, the company said, albeit without disclosing the expenditure earmarked for this.

Prasad is Accenture's new CTO, Sharma is chief services officer
Bengaluru: Rajendra Prasad , who currently serves as chief information and asset engineering officer at Accenture, was elevated to the position of group chief executive – technology and CTO, effective Sept 1. He succeeds Karthik Narain, who is leaving the firm to pursue other opportunities. A two-decade veteran at Accenture, Prasad joined the firm from TCS as manager and lead for process and delivery excellence in 2005. An alumnus of NIT Warangal, he was elevated to the position of global automation lead for tech before becoming the firm's chief information and asset engineering officer last year. In yet another significant development, Accenture will consolidate its services—strategy, consulting, technology, and operations—into a single, integrated business unit called Reinvention Services under the leadership of Manish Sharma, Accenture's current CEO of the Americas. Sharma will become Accenture's first chief services officer. As an integrated business unit, Reinvention Services will be able to create more leading solutions faster and embed data and AI more easily into its solutions and delivery. John Walsh, Accenture's current global chief operating officer, will become CEO of the Americas, succeeding Sharma. Kate Hogan, the current COO of the Americas, will succeed Walsh. "GenAI has been a catalyst for reinvention because the power of GenAI has created the opportunity to meet challenges in new ways, achieving even better results than any single technology in the internet era, and yet GenAI alone is just a tool. GenAI demand continues to be very, very strong. And now it's getting big enough that it's going to fluctuate a little bit. Right. But you'll see it, even as we went through a lot of examples today, GenAI is just being more and more embedded into everything we do." Accenture's workforce was reduced by 10,407 from the second quarter, taking the total base to 790,692 employees. "We invested in our people with 38 million training hours year to date, up 18% over the same period last year. We increased our data and AI workforce to approximately 75,000, continuing progress against our goal of 80,000 by the end of FY26," Sweet said. "I'm also thrilled to congratulate our 97,000 people who were promoted this fiscal year, including more than 800 who were promoted to managing director."
