Power demand hits 12,251 MW on June 7 in Andhra Pradesh as temperatures soar
Vijayawada: With soaring mercury levels and daytime temperatures hitting 40 degrees in several parts of the state, household power consumption drastically increased, resulting in a sharp spike in unrestricted peak demand, which reached a record high of 12,251 megawatts on June 7. Subsequently, the required energy supply saw a significant rise from an average of 190 million units per day during the last week of May to a record high of 246.49 million units on June 6. The average energy required stood between 200 to 240 million units during the first ten days of June, given the persistent heatwave that led to a surge in power consumption in the state. At the same time, the unrestricted peak demand across the state, which was around 9,100 megawatts to 9,500 megawatts in the last week of May, surged past 10,000 megawatts and reached a high of 12,251 megawatts on June 7. It is believed that power consumption in the last week of May was relatively lower as the temperatures stayed below 35 degrees Celsius, coupled with regular showers that provided relief and respite from the heatwave. However, since the start of June, the heatwave gripped the state, and mercury levels soared to 40 degrees, leading to a sharp spike in the usage of air conditioners and other cooling appliances, which subsequently led to the rise in power consumption in the state. Despite a jump in power consumption, the govt managed to provide an uninterrupted power supply without any power cuts to consumers in the state. According to the data gathered from the APTRANSCO official website, non-conventional energy resources (NCEs) such as solar and wind energy contributed approximately 1,637 million units of power out of 3,284 million units supplied between May 26 and June 9 in the state. During the same period, the power supply through Genco Thermal stood at 1,165 million units, while it was 82.8 million units through Genco Hydel.

Ensure timely execution of power projects: CS
Vijayawada: Chief Secretary K Vijayanand conducted a review meeting on APGENCO, thermal power projects, hydel projects and pumped storage projects (PSPs) in the State. The meeting was attended by APGENCO's Managing Director KVN Chakradhar Babu and Directors P Ashok Kumar Reddy and M Sujaya Kumar, Director APTRANSCO AKV Bhaskar among other senior officials. The Chief Secretary stressed on the importance of timely project execution and emphasised inter-departmental coordination in obtaining statutory/MoEF(Ministry of Environment & Forests) clearances for fast-track execution. He directed the officials to maintain momentum in achieving project milestones to meet the State's growing power demand and to ensure energy sustainability for Andhra Pradesh and said that the progress of action plan for the ongoing power generation projects will be reviewed on monthly basis. The Chief Secretary said that the 1,350 MW Upper Sileru Pumped Storage Project works have been awarded, while other pumped storage projects at Kamalapadu, Yaganti, Rajupalem, Aravetipalli, Gadikota and Deenepalli were progressing through various stages of feasibility studies and DPR preparation. He instructed APGENCO officials to initiate necessary arrangements for organising the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Upper Sileru project by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and Minister for Energy Gottipati Ravi Kumar. Emphasising on the significance of key thermal power projects, the Chief Secretary said that wet and dry ash evacuation systems and ash disposal lines were operational and directed the officials to complete balance CHP mechanical and structural works at Dr Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station (Stage V – 1x800 MW) and final commissioning of the mill reject system is scheduled for mid-June 2025. The Chief Secretary also said that at Dr MVR Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant (Stage IV – 1x600 MW), balance CHP construction works such as the crusher house and conveyor systems were progressing steadily and structural steel fabrication and mechanical erection works were being executed. The works are set for timely execution and completion by December 2025. Reviewing the Hydel power projects, the Chief Secretary said that the 960 MW Polavaram Hydro Electric Project is scheduled for commissioning by January 2027.

Andhra Pradesh meets power demand without cuts, energy wastage; dip in consumption
VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh successfully met electricity demand without power cuts or energy wastage during two critical 40-day periods—April 1–30, 2024, and April 1 to May 10, 2025—according to data from the Load Monitoring Cell of the Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation (APTRANSCO). Despite a steady power supply, the State recorded lower electricity consumption in 2025 due to brief rain spells and reduced usage by the ferro alloys sector, a senior energy department official said. In April 2024, APTRANSCO reported an average daily consumption of 248 million units (MU), sufficient to power households, agriculture, and industries statewide. The highest usage was 248 MU from April 5 to April 30, while the lowest was 239 MU on April 1. Peak demand averaged 12,974 megawatts (MW), maintaining a steady 12,994 MW for most of the month. However, in April 2025, electricity usage dropped to 238 MU per day, 10 MU less than the previous year. The highest usage was 245 MU on April 2, and the lowest was 225 MU on April 5. By mid-April, daily consumption stabilized at 240 MU. Peak demand also fell, averaging 11,567 MW—a reduction of 11% from April 2024's 12,974 MW peak. The highest demand in April 2025 was 12,435 MW on April 2, while the lowest was 11,262 MW on April 4.

GENCO & TRANSCO get four directors
VIJAYAWADA: Four newly appointed directors of Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGENCO) and Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (APTRANSCO) assumed their roles at Vidyut Soudha, Vijayawada, on Thursday, following the State government directives. The appointments aim to strengthen the State's power sector and enhance operational efficiency. Vemulapalli Usha has been appointed as Director (HR & IR), APGENCO. With 40 years of experience in APSEB and APGENCO and an degree, she plans to focus on employee skill development, grievance redressal, and aligning HR initiatives with the State's power sector vision. P Ashok Kumar Reddy, a graduate from SV University, takes charge as Director (Thermal), APGENCO. With 36 years of experience, he aims to modernize thermal units, improve plant efficiency, and maintain environmental standards. He led the commissioning of an 800 MW unit at Dr. Narla Tatarao Thermal Power Station and earned SAP ACE and SKOCH Awards. M Sujaya Kumar, with a B.E. (EEE) and MBA (HR), has been appointed Director (Hydel), APGENCO. He plans to optimise hydel power operations and promote renewable energy projects, including 400 MW solar projects at Tadipatri. J Venkateswara Rao, with 38 years of service and a is the new Director (Technical), APTRANSCO. He aims to implement advanced techniques like Live Line Maintenance to ensure uninterrupted power transmission. They expressed gratitude to CM N Chandrababu Naidu, Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar, and Chief Secretary K Vijayanand and pledged to work towards a robust and power sector.
