My grandad from Melaka, new Harimau Malaya hero Hevel tells his detractors
For the record, Hevel is one of seven heritage players in the Harimau Malaya squad. 10 Jun 2025 02:08pm Hevel is one of seven heritage players in the Harimau Malaya squad. Photo source: KUALA LUMPUR - To those who question his eligibility to play for Harimau Malaya, midfielder Hector Hevel has this to say: "My grandfather hailed from Melaka'. Though he doesn't know much about his late grandfather, the 29-year-old said that was the connection that kickstarted talks which culminated in him playing a starring role for Malaysia in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers against Nepal in March. Hevel is one of seven heritage players in the Harimau Malaya squad. Photo source: For the record, Hevel is one of seven heritage players in the Harimau Malaya squad. The other six are strikers Rodrigo Holgado and Imanol Machuca and centreback Facundo Garces (from Argentina); defender Jon Irazabal and left-back Gabriel Palmero (Spain); and striker Joao Figueiredo (Brazil). But none of them could have dreamed of making an instant impact like Hevel did, who not only scored the opening goal in their 2-0 win over Nepal in their opening Group F match of the Asian Cup Qualifiers at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in March but also took home the Man of the Match award. And now, having revealed that he will be joining serial winners Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) next season, Hevel plans to use his time here to trace his family lineage. "I will try to go (and seek information about my family's Malaysian ancestry) when I play with (11-time Super League champions) JDT. I will try to learn more about them,' he said at a press conference here recently. But that's for another time. For now, Hevel is thrilled to bits after receiving a second call-up to the Harimau Malaya setup as they gear up for their second 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers Group F match against favourites Vietnam at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (June 10). "When I found out that they wanted me to come, I was really happy and excited. "Obviously, I played the first game and it went well because we won it. The second call-up is always good and it boosts your confidence as well because they've called you again,' he said. Malaysia's next Asian Cup Qualifiers outing after Tuesday's clash is an away match against Laos on Oct 9. - BERNAMA TAGS: sport, football, Hector Hevel, heritage player, Harimau Malaya

Parth Jindal calls for new manager after India's unacceptable Hong Kong loss
Bengaluru FC co-owner and JSW Sports' Parth Jindal has publicly urged the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to bring in a new head coach following India's dismal 0-1 defeat to Hong Kong in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers on June 10. The result, coming on the back of a 3-0 friendly drubbing by Thailand, has sparked widespread frustration, with Jindal's social media post amplifying the growing discontent among JSW scion didn't mince words in his criticism, demanding sweeping changes in Indian football's leadership and structure. Jindal's reaction reflected the mood of many Indian supporters who have watched the team consistently fall short in key international fixtures despite promises of is completely unacceptable @IndianFootball - just not good enough under any circumstances - deep introspection needed by the AIFF - this is not what all of us lovers and backers of Indian football have spent our hard earned money and effort to witness - get a manager and a— Parth Jindal (@ParthJindal11) June 10, 2025"This is completely unacceptable @IndianFootball - just not good enough under any circumstances - deep introspection needed by the AIFF - this is not what all of us lovers and backers of Indian football have spent our hard earned money and effort to witness - get a manager and a system that works - it's high time - there is too much effort to see a result like this," Jindal wrote in his Against Hong Kong, India were undone by a moment of defensive recklessness in injury time. Goalkeeper Vishal Kaith rushed off his line in an attempt to clear the ball but ended up fouling Hong Kong forward Michael Udebuluzor inside the box. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty, and Stefan Pereira calmly converted from the spot in the 90+4th minute to seal a famous win for Hong for their part, had their chances. Ashique Kuruniyan squandered a golden opportunity in the first half after being played through by Liston Colaco. But as has often been the case in recent outings, India lacked the clinical edge required to make their dominance coach Igor Marquez's decision to start without Sunil Chhetri — who had returned from retirement to aid a faltering attack — also raised eyebrows. His replacement, Lallianzuala Chhangte, struggled to make an impact, while the midfield looked disconnected and uninspired defeat deepens the crisis surrounding the national team, not just in terms of results but also tactical clarity and team morale. With qualification hopes for the Asian Cup now hanging by a thread, serious questions are being asked of the coaching staff and the AIFF's direction.

India suffered narrow defeat to Hong Kong in Asian Cup Qualifiers
Kowloon (Hong Kong), June 10 (UNI) The Indian national football team fell to a 1-0 defeat against Hong Kong in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers at Kai Tak Stadium here on Tuesday. A stoppage-time penalty from Stefan Pereira secured all three points for the hosts. India's head coach Manolo Marquez made three changes to the starting lineup from the previous friendly against Thailand. Suresh Singh Wangjam came in for Ayush Dev Chhetri in central midfield, while Brandon Fernandes and Lallianzuala Chhangte replaced Sunil Chhetri and Manvir Singh, respectively. Ashique Kuruniyan was deployed up front. With both teams having dropped points in their opening fixtures, they approached the game with urgency and attacking intent. The early stages saw end-to-end action, but neither side could carve out a clear-cut chance. In the 25th minute, Hong Kong's Raphael Lee tested Vishal Kaith with a long-range effort, but the Indian goalkeeper stood firm. Liston Colaco responded with a strike from distance at the other end, which the opposition keeper comfortably collected. Anwar Ali made a crucial intervention around the half-hour mark, timing his tackle perfectly at the edge of the box to deny a dangerous Hong Kong move. Had he missed, it could have spelled trouble for the Blue Tigers — and him. India's best chance of the half came in the 35th minute when Brandon Fernandes won possession near the halfway line. He released Liston Colaco, who threaded a sharp through-ball to Ashique. However, the forward couldn't keep his shot on target from close range. Hong Kong came close just before the break when Juninho attempted a quick free-kick to catch India off guard, but the Indian defence reacted well to avert the threat. The teams headed into half-time with the score still goalless. Five minutes into the second half, Ashique had another opportunity, but his half-turn shot went wide. In the 57th minute, Ashique, who appeared to be in some discomfort, was replaced by Sunil Chhetri, while Naorem Mahesh Singh came on for Brandon Fernandes. A few minutes later, Wangjam lost the ball in a dangerous area, allowing Manuel Rodriguez a chance on goal, but his effort was tipped over the bar by Kaith for a corner. In the 80th minute, Mahesh and Chhetri combined well, with the latter playing a through ball to Liston Colaco, who fired his effort wide. Moments later, Lallianzuala Chhangte made a driving run and set up Chhetri, whose attempt was blocked for a corner by Leon Jones. The decisive moment came in the first minute of added time when Kaith conceded a penalty. Pereira stepped up, and his shot clipped the inside of the post before rolling into the net — his strike ultimately sealing the win for Hong Kong. This result left the Blue Tigers with one point from two matches, while Hong Kong climbed to four. UNI BM BD
