British superyacht Bayesian resurfaces for first time since August sinking ahead of recovery

Your web browser is no longer supported. To improve your experience update it here The British superyacht that sank off Sicily last August killing seven people resurfaced for the first time on Friday as salvage recovery crews readied it to be hauled ashore for further investigation. The coast guard said the actual recovery was scheduled to begin on Saturday morning (Saturday evening AEST). Italian Coast Guard's Luigi Dattilo patrol boat, left, assists the multi-purpose floating work barge Hebo Lift 2 monitoring the stretch of sea off Porticello, near Palermo, Sicily, Italy, Sunday, May 4, 2025, where the British superyacht Bayesian sunk on August 19, 2024 as the operations for its recovery start. (AP Photo/Salvatore Cavalli) A spokesman for TMC Maritime, which is conducting the recovery operation, said the vessel has been slowly raised from the seabed, 50 metres down, over the past three days to allow the steel lifting straps, slings and harnesses to be secured under the keel. What became visible for the first time on Friday on the surface of the water was the top of the passenger area of the Bayesian where passengers would sit, known as the accommodation area, said a spokesman for TMC Maritime, David Wilson. The British-flagged luxury superyacht sank August 19 off Porticello near Palermo during a violent storm, killing UK tech magnate Mike Lynch, his daughter and five others. Fifteen people survived, including the captain and all crew members except the chef. Italian authorities are conducting a full criminal investigation. When it resurfaced, the Bayesian was missing its 72-metre mast, which was cut down and left on the seabed for future removal. The 56-metre (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian was known for its single 75-metre mast, one of the world's tallest made of aluminium. (Perini Navi) The mast had to be detached to allow the hull to be brought to a nearly upright position that would allow the craft to be surfaced, TMC Maritime said earlier this week. British investigators said in an interim report issued last month that the yacht was knocked over by "extreme wind" and couldn't recover. The report stated that the Bayesian had chosen the site where it sank as shelter from forecast thunderstorms. Wind speeds exceeded 70 knots (130km/h) at the time of the sinking and "violently" knocked the vessel over to a 90-degree angle in under 15 seconds. Lynch had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with his family and the people who had defended him at trial. CONTACT US

How to watch Lions vs Argentina: Live stream the 2025 rugby tour for FREE

Will the toughest fixture of the 2025 British & Irish Lions tour come before the team sets off? Though Argentina are without Juan Cruz Mallia, Guido Petti and Thomas Gallo, they're an established group that will identify any weaknesses in the Lions setup and exploit them ruthlessly. The Lions vs Argentina is a once-in-a-generation game, if that. Pumas coach Felipe Contepomi was on the field the last time they met, 20 years ago, and played his part in a 25-25 thriller. Their previous encounter? Way back in 1936. And what makes Friday's meeting extra special is that it's the first ever Lions game to be staged in Ireland. With Andy Farrell in charge and 16 members of the 38-man squad comprising Irish players, the sendoff afforded by Dublin will be spectacular. And nobody of an Irish persuasion will be in any doubt as to Argentina's quality. Contepomi's men came within a whisker of silencing the Aviva Stadium in November. Elon Musk's SpaceX Starship rocket explodes on platform in Texas

A large SpaceX rocket segment exploded on a test platform in south Texas on Wednesday night (Thursday morning AEST), sending a massive fireball high into the sky. It marked the fourth consecutive failure of a Starship rocket, which is designed to realise founder Elon Musk's dream of humanity colonising Mars. SpaceX said the Starship 'experienced a major anomaly' at about 11pm local time (8am AEST) on a test stand. It was preparing for flight test at Starbase, the small town that Musk is using as a base for his operations at the southern tip of Texas. 'A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for,' SpaceX said in a statement on the social platform X.

Top 10 at 11: ASX plunges 0.31pc in first hour of trade

Morning, and welcome to Stockhead's Top 10 (at 11… ish), highlighting the movers and shakers on the ASX in early-doors trading. With the market opening at 10am sharp eastern time, the data is taken at 10.15am, once trading kicks off in earnest. In brief, this is what the market has been up to this morning. ASX flashes red across the board It's been building over the last couple of days, but Aussie traders have officially had enough of the chaos, and they're pulling back sharply in the first hour of trade this morning. After small dips over the last week or so, the ASX has finally pulled back into a correction, losing 0.31%. The sectors are all in the red except energy, but that's barely worth a mention at +0.01% as of about 10:30 am AEST. The All Ords Gold index is also slightly up, adding just 0.04%, but otherwise it's a sea of negatives on the market this morning. We're not alone – European markets fell to month lows last night, and while the US was closed for the Juneteenth holiday, futures are predicting near full percentage point plunges for the S&P500 and Nasdaq tomorrow. As Eddy Sunarto reported this morning, the global economy is teetering on the edge as we wait to see if US President Donald Trump will involve the US directly in the Israel-Iran conflict. In the meantime, let's see who's making moves on the ASX. Bowen Coking Coal (ASX:BCB) has signalled it's considering placing the Burton Mine Complex operation into a temporary pause if an effort to transition the project to an owner-operator model is unsuccessful. The company is exploring a range of options to fund the transition plan and provide immediate liquidity, but the most recent Resources and Energy Quarterly forecasts falling demand for met coal as low emissions steel production gains pace. Dreadnought Resources (ASX:DRE) hit gold in 20 of 46 drill holes over various prospects at the Mangaroon gold project in WA, but results of up to 6m at 22.9 gold from 12m of depth weren't enough to wow investors. Some of that disappointment can be explained by a lack of results at the Lead Mine and Two Peaks prospects, where DRE hit nothing of consequence and will need to review its drill orientation.

ASX set to fall as Wall Street dips; Fed keeps rates on hold, says future is ‘foggy'

US stocks drifted to a mixed finish after the Federal Reserve indicated it may cut interest rates twice this year, though it's far from certain about that. The S&P 500 finished nearly unchanged and edged down by less than 0.1 per cent after flipping between modest gains and losses several times. The Dow Jones dipped 44 points, or 0.1 per cent, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.1 per cent. The Australian sharemarket is set to retreat, with futures at 6.37am AEST pointing to a loss of 28 points or 0.3 per cent, at the open. The ASX lost 0.1 per cent on Wednesday. The Australian is stronger. It was 0.5 per cent higher to 65.09 US cents at 6.50am AEST. Unemployment figures will be released at 11.30am AEST. Treasury yields also wavered but ultimately held relatively steady after the Fed released a set of projections showing the median official expects to cut the federal funds rate twice by the end of 2025. That's the same number they were projecting three months ago, and it helped calm worries a bit that inflation caused by President Donald Trump's tariffs could tie the Fed's hands. Loading Cuts in rates would make mortgages, credit-card payments and other loans cheaper for US households and businesses, which in turn could strengthen the overall economy. But they could likewise fan inflation higher. So far, inflation has remained relatively tame, and it's near the Fed's target of 2 per cent. But economists have been warning it may take months to feel the effects of tariffs. And inflation has been feeling upward pressure recently from a spurt in oil prices because of Israel's fighting with Iran. Fed Chair Jerome Powell stressed on Wednesday that all the uncertainty surrounding tariffs means the median forecast for two cuts to interest rates this year could end up being far from reality. 'Right now it's just a forecast in a very foggy time,' he said Fed officials are waiting to see how big Trump's tariffs will ultimately be, what they will affect and whether they will drive a one-time increase to inflation or something more dangerous. There is also still deep uncertainty about how much tariffs will grind down on the economy's growth.
