Can Momentum in QNX Unit Fuel BlackBerry's Top-Line Growth?
BlackBerry Limited's BB QNX business, formed by rebranding its IoT unit, is benefiting from strength in the automotive segment, particularly strong demand for its solutions across the advanced driver assistance systems market and digital cockpit domain. Continued design win momentum is anticipated to further strengthen the QNX royalty backlog. The increasing adoption of the next-generation version of the QNX operating system, Software Development Platform (SDP) 8.0 (across aerospace, medical equipment, rail and defence verticals), as well as the release of the QNX General Embedded Development Platform, are aiding it. It supports modern platforms (ARMv9, RISC-V, multicore CPUs) and development tools and includes QNX Hypervisor 2.2 for mixed-criticality virtualization. Recently, BlackBerry's QNX announced that its SDP 8.0 will serve as the base OS for the Eclipse Foundation's Safe Open Vehicle Core (S-CORE) Project, supporting faster, cost-effective development of Software Defined Vehicles and marking a key step toward a common, safety-critical automotive platform. In May 2025, BlackBerry's QNX unit launched QNX Hypervisor 8.0, a virtualization tool built on SDP 8.0 to simplify complex embedded software development. It enables multiple OSes—like Android, Linux and QNX—to run securely on a single SoC via a microkernel architecture, offering virtualized memory, CPUs, devices and system isolation. Growing momentum in QNX Cabin with multi-year deal wins from the top 10 global auto OEMs further cushions its prospects. Despite delays in automotive software development, QNX's royalty backlog grew year over year to about $865 million. This shows that QNX is adding future royalty revenue faster than it is being recognized, which BlackBerry sees as a strong sign of the business's long-term health. QNX is a leading brand in the automotive sector, and BlackBerry is increasingly leveraging its strength as a key driver for top-line growth for fiscal 2026 and beyond. For the QNX business, revenues are expected to be in the range of $51-$55 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2026. However, the company anticipates a sequential fall in the revenues from the QNX business, which totaled $65.8 million during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. Volatility in the automotive sector remains concerning. Management, on the last earnings call, highlighted that due to recent tariff changes, especially on automotive goods, BlackBerry is currently unsure how this will affect its business. While it does not expect a direct impact on products and services, there may be indirect effects on its customers, such as supply chain disruptions and changes in demand. Alphabet Inc.'s GOOG Android Automotive OS (AAOS), launched in 2017, is a full-stack OS running directly on vehicle hardware, with services like Google Maps, Assistant and Play Store. It powers vehicles from Volvo, GM, Ford, Renault-Nissan, Stellantis, BMW and others. BMW adopted AAOS for OS8, and Ford plans to shift over half its fleet to it. According to S&P Global's report, AAOS will reach approximately 18% market share by 2027, while QNX falls to around 5%. Though AAOS lacks real-time and safety certifications, it excels in infotainment and app integration, often requiring a separate RTOS for critical systems. Wind River, owned by Aptiv PLC APTV, offers VxWorks (a real-time OS), Wind River Linux and Wind River Studio (cloud-based development/IoT platform). VxWorks is a mature RTOS certified for ISO 26262 ASIL-D, widely used in avionics and some automotive domains (particularly ADAS and autonomous platforms). Wind River has collaborated with Elektrobit to demo a software-defined vehicle controller. It's among the few RTOSes supporting OCI containers for edge deployments. While its automotive market share is smaller than BlackBerry QNX's, it's widely deployed in mission-critical systems. Wind River partners with AWS, NXP, Intel and Tier-1 suppliers, focusing on software-defined vehicles and IoT. Recent efforts include deeper integration with Elektrobit and AWS to advance autonomous vehicle development and edge-to-cloud solutions. Android Automotive 16 Adds Easier Gemini AI Integration, Expanded Card Display in UI
Google has released the latest version of its in-car OS, Android Automotive 16 (AAOS). One of the main changes is the removal of the Weather card from the home screen, so now the Media card expands and displays more information, such as whether your latest food order is ready, as reported by Android Authority. The volume control has also moved from the bottom right to the top left, sitting next to the brightness adjustment, and a new button for the voice assistant takes its former spot. The system bars at the top and bottom of the screen now match the background color; earlier, they were only black bars, the report said. The volume panel itself has been redesigned to be more compact and clearly labeled, with a slider for navigation volume and the "ringer volume" renamed to "in-call volume" for clarity. The notification panel now has a fully opaque background. A new switch for Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is now available in the settings for connected devices. As reported by Android Authority separately, this allows users to use their phones as digital car keys to unlock and start their vehicles securely. Another important point is the AppCards, which let third-party apps display relevant information directly on the home screen. This comes after previous versions only supported system-provided cards. Although the changes in Android Automotive 16 are not big, they improve the experience for users and give developers more flexibility. Most vehicles will not ship with the exact interface as in the open-source version, as automakers are free to modify the system to fit their needs.

Android Automotive update will make it easier to talk to Gemini in your car
TL;DR The Android Automotive 16 update introduces several subtle UI changes to the home screen, launcher, and notification panel. Key adjustments include a redesigned volume panel, a taller media card, a new voice assistant button, and a more legible app grid. The update also adds a toggle for Ultra-Wideband (UWB), a key component of Android's digital car key feature. Just like with Android on phones and tablets, Google pushes out yearly updates to its OS for cars, Android Automotive OS (AAOS). Unlike on mobile devices, these updates are typically smaller in scope; for safety, the in-car platform is intentionally more limited. While the upcoming Android Automotive 16 update won't be as feature-packed as Android 16 for phones, it still introduces several subtle UI changes to the home screen, launcher, and notification panel, as well as makes it easier to launch the digital assistant. Before we dive in, it's important to clarify a few things. First, Android Automotive OS isn't the same as Android Auto. Android Auto is an interface projected to your car's infotainment screen from your phone, while AAOS is the native operating system that runs directly on the car's hardware. Second, because AAOS is open-source, automakers can customize it heavily. The changes we're highlighting are from the baseline version of the OS, meaning the final UI in your vehicle may look different. Even cars marketed with 'Google built-in' aren't guaranteed to adopt these specific changes, as that branding primarily refers to the inclusion of Google's apps. With that out of the way, here's everything new we spotted in the Android Automotive 16 release. What's new in Android Automotive 16 On the home screen, the Weather card has been removed, allowing the Media card to become much taller. Additionally, the system bars at the top and bottom now match the UI's background color instead of being permanently black. The quick access volume button moves from the bottom right corner to the top left, positioning it next to the brightness control. In its place, you'll find a new dedicated voice assistant button. This change makes launching the digital assistant more accessible and could be laying the groundwork for Gemini's arrival in cars with Google Built-in. Home screen in Android Automotive 15 Home screen in Android Automotive 16 Speaking of volume, the pop-up volume panel has been redesigned. It's now fully expanded by default and no longer stretches across the entire display, instead appearing as a more compact overlay with a dimmed background. Each audio stream (like media or navigation) gets a clear text label above its corresponding slider. A new button at the top of the panel launches the media output switcher, while a shortcut to the main sound settings now sits at the bottom. Lastly, there's a new dedicated slider for navigation volume, and 'ringer volume' has been renamed to the more descriptive 'in-call volume.' This subtle tweak should make notifications easier to read on the road. While this shows fewer icons per page, it gives app labels more space and prevents them from being cut off. UWB is the radio technology that powers the existing Android digital car key feature. The radio allows your phone to securely act as your car key, letting you lock, unlock, and start the vehicle without ever taking the device out of your pocket or bag. App drawer grid in Android Automotive 15 App drawer grid in Android Automotive 16 None of these UI changes are splashy, especially when compared to the big Material 3 Expressive overhaul that Google recently announced for mobile devices. It makes sense why we aren't seeing big UI changes in Android Automotive, though. Your primary focus while driving should be on the road, not on your infotainment unit. AAOS was designed to minimize distractions, which is why it avoids fancy animations and bold colors. It was also designed to be heavily customized by car makers, however, so it's unlikely we'll see many vehicles ship with this interface as is. That's everything we spotted while testing the open-source version of Android Automotive 16. I wish there was more to say about Android Automotive 16, but even Google's official release notes confirm how minor this year's update is. In contrast, last year's Android Automotive 15 release brought far more substantial changes. Car framework: Dynamic configuration of vehicle properties : Support the dynamic configuration of minimum and maximum and of supported values in vehicle properties. Connectivity Networking: Minimal Telephony : A subset of the Android Telephony Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) for automotive OEMs to allow OEMs to use Android telephony on data-only devices (including TCUs). This reduces fragmentation and provides support for telephony functionality. Connectivity Messaging Upsell API : Enhanced SubscriptionManager to provide APIs that can expose a user's mobile data subscription status. For example, active, inactive, trial, and expiration date. Projected app support : Added support to let automotive OEMs configure the complete set of parameters not available through the Android APIs. Added a disconnect reason to the SoftApCallback API so that OEMs can learn why clients disconnected from a Local Hotspot (LOHS). These features improve support for projected apps and reduce fragmentation. AAOS System UI & Experiences ScalableUI : This AAOS windowing framework provides OEMs with configurable components that let OEMs meet windowing requirements and facilitate custom experiences. VHAL properties Vehicle properties: Added new vehicle properties to communicate vehicle characteristics and state. Updated vehicle property constants from @SystemApi to public APIs to consolidate generated documentation at VehiclePropertyIDs. Any previously defined and documented permissions are still required to access vehicle property data. Third party-accessible vehicle properties : This features makes eight existing vehicle properties relevant to navigation, voice assistant, weather, and driving state available to third party app developers. Volvo Cars, Google expand partnership to deploy Gemini AI in vehicles

Volvo Cars is expanding its partnership with Google to rapidly deploy its Gemini AI-powered assistant to more of its vehicles featuring Google built-in, the automaker announced on May 21. As part of the expanded collaboration, Volvo vehicles will serve as one of Google's reference hardware platforms for the future deployment of Android Automotive OS (AAOS), which is designed to replace an OEM vehicle infotainment system. 'We're excited to deepen this partnership, accelerating the pace of innovation that will not only improve the driving experience for Volvo customers but also set new benchmarks for the automotive industry,' said Patrick Brady, VP of Android for Cars at Google, in the release. The more feature-rich Gemini AI-powered voice assistant will replace the current Google Assistant of Volvo vehicles later this year, making the automaker's customers among the first to access the latest version of Google's generative AI technology. Gemini allows drivers and passengers to request information about virtually any topic using natural conversations. For example, drivers can ask Gemini questions about the vehicle's user manual or request specific details about a destination before arriving. The AI-powered assistant can also help drivers draft messages, which can be translated into over 40 different languages before sending. Google has also selected Volvo Cars as its lead development partner for testing new features and updates, before adding them to the Android codebase for access to software developers. The Android codebase is known as the 'Android Open Source Project' and the software it contains is free for developers to use. The platform allows anyone to view, modify and distribute code for their own use. Google offers the developer community extensive resources and guidelines for creating Android-based apps. According to Volvo, its expanded partnership with Google will help 'accelerate advancements in the connected car space for the entire automotive industry' and for drivers globally. 'We strive to deliver human-centric technology, and a stunning customer experience is an essential part of this,' said Alwin Bakkenes, head of global software engineering at Volvo Cars, in the release. 'With our expanding partnership, we're collaborating on cutting-edge solutions that shape the future of connected cars.' The Google partnership with Volvo advances the rollout of AAOS currently used by Volvo Cars. Vehicles running AAOS do not require syncing with a smartphone for access to popular Google services. Volvo vehicles with Google built-in come with Google Play, Google Assistant, Google Maps and other popular apps. For Volvo models equipped with AAOS, the vehicle's infotainment system serves as a standalone Android device. Drivers can download and install Android or other-third party apps directly to their vehicle's infotainment system. The latest version of AAOS was released in December 2024. In addition to future Volvo vehicles, Gemini will be made available for other OEM brands featuring Google built-in later this year, including the new Lincoln Nautilus, Honda Passport and select Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Acura vehicles. Google also announced that it is adding Gemini to Android Auto in the coming months, which can mirror apps wirelessly on compatible models from a smartphone that's synced to a vehicle. Moximed announces treatment of first subject in trial of knee system
Moximed has announced the treatment of the first subject in the multi-centre MOTION randomised controlled trial (RCT) assessing its MISHA knee system against non-surgical treatment in individuals with medial knee osteoarthritis (OA). This prospective trial is designed to assess the benefits of the MISHA system compared with non-surgical treatment options endorsed by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Clinical Practice Guidelines. These include physical therapy, weight management, physical conditioning, intra-articular injections, assistive devices, and various medications. At least 100 participants will be randomised in the trial, which is currently enrolling at approximately ten sites across the US. Enrolment locations include RUSH University Medical Center, NYU Langone Health, and Scripps Health. The primary endpoint of the study is the improvement in the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain score. In 2023, the MISHA knee system secured marketing authorisation from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The system claims to have demonstrated superiority to high tibial osteotomy (HTO) in two years after the operation. It is specifically designed for those who have not found relief from previous treatments and are either ineligible for or unwilling to undergo joint replacement surgery. Knee OA is said to arise when the joint's natural shock absorbers, the cartilage and meniscus, fail to cushion it, resulting in chronic pain and restricted activity. Moximed noted that as the first implantable shock absorber for the knee, the MISHA system minimises the load on the joint while walking, potentially alleviating pain, preserving joint function, and delaying the need for replacement surgery. The device is implanted on the medial knee and is engineered to move in harmony with the joint, decreasing 30% of the peak force exerted on the knee during walking. Moximed CEO and president Christopher Gleason said: 'Knee OA patients across the country are looking for an effective and less invasive treatment option without activity restrictions. 'The growing commercial adoption of the MISHA knee system reflects the confidence that physicians and patients have in this breakthrough treatment.'
