Android Automotive update will make it easier to talk to Gemini in your car
TL;DR The Android Automotive 16 update introduces several subtle UI changes to the home screen, launcher, and notification panel.
Key adjustments include a redesigned volume panel, a taller media card, a new voice assistant button, and a more legible app grid.
The update also adds a toggle for Ultra-Wideband (UWB), a key component of Android's digital car key feature.
Just like with Android on phones and tablets, Google pushes out yearly updates to its OS for cars, Android Automotive OS (AAOS). Unlike on mobile devices, these updates are typically smaller in scope; for safety, the in-car platform is intentionally more limited. While the upcoming Android Automotive 16 update won't be as feature-packed as Android 16 for phones, it still introduces several subtle UI changes to the home screen, launcher, and notification panel, as well as makes it easier to launch the digital assistant.
Before we dive in, it's important to clarify a few things. First, Android Automotive OS isn't the same as Android Auto. Android Auto is an interface projected to your car's infotainment screen from your phone, while AAOS is the native operating system that runs directly on the car's hardware. Second, because AAOS is open-source, automakers can customize it heavily. The changes we're highlighting are from the baseline version of the OS, meaning the final UI in your vehicle may look different. Even cars marketed with 'Google built-in' aren't guaranteed to adopt these specific changes, as that branding primarily refers to the inclusion of Google's apps.
With that out of the way, here's everything new we spotted in the Android Automotive 16 release.
What's new in Android Automotive 16
On the home screen, the Weather card has been removed, allowing the Media card to become much taller. Additionally, the system bars at the top and bottom now match the UI's background color instead of being permanently black.
The quick access volume button moves from the bottom right corner to the top left, positioning it next to the brightness control. In its place, you'll find a new dedicated voice assistant button. This change makes launching the digital assistant more accessible and could be laying the groundwork for Gemini's arrival in cars with Google Built-in.

Speaking of volume, the pop-up volume panel has been redesigned. It's now fully expanded by default and no longer stretches across the entire display, instead appearing as a more compact overlay with a dimmed background. Each audio stream (like media or navigation) gets a clear text label above its corresponding slider. A new button at the top of the panel launches the media output switcher, while a shortcut to the main sound settings now sits at the bottom. Lastly, there's a new dedicated slider for navigation volume, and 'ringer volume' has been renamed to the more descriptive 'in-call volume.'

The notification panel now features a fully opaque background, a departure from the dimmed transparency in the previous version. This subtle tweak should make notifications easier to read on the road.

In a similar move for legibility, the app drawer grid has been adjusted from 5×3 to 4×3. While this shows fewer icons per page, it gives app labels more space and prevents them from being cut off.

Finally, we spotted a new toggle for Ultra-Wideband (UWB) in Settings > Connected devices. UWB is the radio technology that powers the existing Android digital car key feature. The radio allows your phone to securely act as your car key, letting you lock, unlock, and start the vehicle without ever taking the device out of your pocket or bag.

None of these UI changes are splashy, especially when compared to the big Material 3 Expressive overhaul that Google recently announced for mobile devices. It makes sense why we aren't seeing big UI changes in Android Automotive, though. Your primary focus while driving should be on the road, not on your infotainment unit. AAOS was designed to minimize distractions, which is why it avoids fancy animations and bold colors. It was also designed to be heavily customized by car makers, however, so it's unlikely we'll see many vehicles ship with this interface as is.
That's everything we spotted while testing the open-source version of Android Automotive 16. Our thanks go to Snapp Automotive, a firm that specializes in developing infotainment software for cars running AAOS, for sharing the emulator images. You can try these images for yourself by following Snapp Automotive's instructions on GitHub.
I wish there was more to say about Android Automotive 16, but even Google's official release notes confirm how minor this year's update is. In contrast, last year's Android Automotive 15 release brought far more substantial changes.

Intel to outsource marketing to Accenture and AI, resulting in more layoffs
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Employees at Intel's marketing division were informed that many of their roles will be handed over to Accenture, which will use AI to handle tasks traditionally done by Intel staff, reports OregonLive. The decision is part of a company-wide restructuring plan that includes job cuts, automation, and streamlining of execution. The marketing division has been one of Intel's key strengths since the company began communicating directly with end users with the launch of its "Intel Inside" campaign in 1991. However, it looks like the company will drastically cut its human-driven marketing efforts going forward, as it plans to lay off many of its marketing employees, believing that Accenture's AI will do a better job connecting Intel with customers. The number of positions affected was not disclosed, but Intel confirmed changes will significantly alter team structures, with only 'lean' teams remaining. Workers will be told by July 11 whether they will remain with the company. Among other things, the aim of the restructuring is to free up internal teams to focus on strategic, creative, and high-value projects, rather than routine functions. Therefore, Intel intends to use Accenture's AI in various aspects of marketing, including information processing, task automation, and personalized communications. Intel has acknowledged the shift to Accenture and explained that this will not only cut costs but will modernize its capabilities and strengthen its brand. How exactly the usage of AI instead of real people can reinforce the brand hasn't been explained yet. "As we announced earlier this year, we are taking steps to become a leaner, faster and more efficient company," a statement by Intel published by OregonLive reads. "As part of this, we are focused on modernizing our digital capabilities to serve our customers better and strengthen our brand. Accenture is a longtime partner and trusted leader in these areas and we look forward to expanding our work together." In messages to staff published by OregonLive, Intel indicated that part of the restructuring may involve existing employees training Accenture contractors by explaining how Intel's operations work. This knowledge transfer would occur during the transitional phase of the outsourcing plan, although it is unclear how long this phase will take. 2 world-class growth shares to consider buying during a stock market crash
It's always a smart idea to have a shopping list of shares at hand. This is what I had in April when the proverbial hit the fan, saving me valuable time deciding which stocks to buy when many suddenly went on sale. Two on my list were Shopify and Nvidia, and I took my chance when things quickly went south. Those positions are currently up 40% and 51% respectively since early April. Here are two shares that look overvalued, but which I think investors should consider putting on a shopping list for the next bear market or crash. The first is Axon Enterprise (NASDAQ: AXON). As well as owning the Taser brand, the company sells body-cams, dash-cams, and various software products to law enforcement customers. It's also innovating in drones, VR training, and powerful artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools. Last year, revenue jumped 33% to $2.1bn, up from $681m in 2020. Over $1bn of that is now annual recurring revenue, while total future contracted bookings rose to $10.1bn. The company continues to scale up very impressively. This rapid progress is reflected in the share price, which has vaulted 700% in three years. The key risk now then is valuation, with the shares trading at 27 times sales. If Axon's growth underwhelms, the stock could sell off heavily. But I think this is definitely one to consider picking up during any such sell-off. The enterprise growth opportunity's very large. Take body-cams, for example. In an attempt to reduce attacks on staff, Walmart's piloting black-and-yellow body-cams in some stores (Axon's signature colours). Management points out that Walmart has 2.1m retail workers, far in excess of the 900,000 cops in the US. What about airlines? Cabin crew are no strangers to abusive behaviour. Cameras can provide evidence, reduce false claims, and deter aggression. They would integrate with Axon's cloud-based evidence system, adding to the recurring revenue. Meanwhile, the company's sitting on a library of video data that's roughly 40 times larger than that belonging to Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX). Axon's using this vast data trove to train AI models and power a growing suite of tools, embedding it ever deeper into customers' daily workflows. Looking ahead, the international opportunity in Europe, Latin America and Asia remains largely untapped. Returning to Netflix, I think the global streaming leader is worthy of consideration. But perhaps not right now around $1,220. This price puts the stock at 13 times sales and 49 times forward earnings. Again, this stretched valuation leaves very little margin for error, particularly if subscriber growth unexpectantly slows. Long term though, I'm bullish on Netflix. The firm possesses an incredible brand and streaming still has plenty of room to grow globally. It also offers fantastic value for money. At £12.99, my Netflix subscription's probably one of the last discretionary things I would cut. The new ad-supported tier is just £5.99 a month — less than the price of a pint in London nowadays! I think Netflix can keep increasing prices for years without losing too many subscribers. The firm has set a goal of reaching a $1trn market-cap by 2030, up from $520bn today. I think that's achievable, especially if cutting-edge generative AI helps it make content for less money. Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. wins NASCAR national series debut as crew chief at Pocono
LONG POND, Pa. — Dale Earnhardt Jr. might already be NASCAR's most popular crew chief. He's certainly an undefeated one. Pressed into unexpected service, Earnhardt called the shots for 18-year-old prospect Connor Zilisch in the No. 88 Chevrolet and they landed in victory lane Saturday in the second-tier Xfinity Series race at Pocono Raceway. 'It felt good to have some input and decision-making power,' Earnhardt said. 'And then helping Connor understand what our plan was so he knew when to push and what he was expected to do.' Earnhardt — who won NASCAR's most-popular driver award 15 times — made a pit stop from his day job as team owner at JR Motorsports with normal crew chief Mardy Lindley suspended one race because of a lug nut infraction this month at Nashville. Aside from his duties as team owner, Earnhardt also was at Pocono for his role on the Prime broadcast for the NASCAR Cup Series race Sunday. 'Lot of fun for me today,' Earnhardt said. 'I missed the thrill of competition. I love broadcast, don't get me wrong. But nothing compares to driving or just being part of the team. Being an owner doesn't really deliver like this. This is a lot of fun.' Earnhardt had his wife and two young daughters in tow with him as he made the celebratory walk to victory lane. Oldest daughter Isla Rose clutched the checkered flag while youngest Nicole Lorraine soaked in the scene from her dad's arms. 'I love that they just get to experience things about NASCAR,' Earnhardt said. 'I had such a great time growing up as a kid in this sport, just running around here. I want them to have that opportunity and understand that this is a place where they could create opportunities for themselves down the road.' The win continued a banner season for the NASCAR Hall of Fame driver — who swept two races at Pocono as a driver in 2014 — after JR Motorsports and reigning Xfinity Series champion Justin Allgaier qualified for the season-opening Daytona 500 and secured their Cup Series debut . Earnhardt won two Daytona 500s, in 2004 and 2014, and 26 races overall. His side hustle Saturday was made a bit easier with Zilisch behind the wheel. Zilisch, who turns 19 in July, raced to his second Xfinity victory of the season and third of his young career. He won his Xfinity debut last year at Watkins Glen International. Earnhardt even pitched in during the race and tossed tires over the wall during pit stops. 'Midway through the race man, I was feeling it,' Earnhardt said. Zilisch took the win down to the wire and finally passed Jesse Love with five laps left in the race. Love finished second. 'Dale Junior, not too bad on the box,' Zilisch said. 'Pretty cool to have him up there. Getting him a 1-for-1 win as crew chief is pretty awesome.' Even with the victory, it just might be one-and-done on the pit box for Earnhardt. 'I don't know that I see myself doing it again,' he said. ___ AP auto racing:
