Samsung's tri-fold appears on certification site with disappointing battery news
The Samsung Galaxy G Fold is the manufacturer's response to Huawei's tri-fold Mate XT Ultimate Design. Despite rumored pricing in the $3,000-$3,500 range, close to the Mate XT's price tag when converted to U.S. Dollars, some looking to purchase the Galaxy G Fold are going to be disappointed by mundane specs that aren't what you might expect for such a pricey handset. For example, the Galaxy G Fold recently surfaced on China's 3C certification site also known as the China Compulsory Certificate site, Devices to be sold in China must have the 3C safety and quality certification which is similar to the UL certification in the U.S. and CE certification in Europe. The 3C website reveals that Sammy's tri-fold listed on the 3C website carries a model number SM-F9680 with the "0" indicating that this particular version of the phone will be sold in China. Reportedly, the Galaxy G Fold will be available in just two markets, Samsung's home turf of South Korea, and China, the world's largest market for smartphones. This might have been done because Samsung was concerned that the phone's thin form factor would leave little room inside the phone. To prevent any risk of overheating and worse, the wired charging rate has been capped at 25W. However, Huawei's Mate XT charges much faster with its wired and wireless charging speeds at 66W and 50W respectively. You can't blame Samsung for having the Galaxy Note 7's battery issue in the back of its mind. Samsung, like Apple, has been the subject of criticism over the relatively slow battery charging speeds that the company's handsets offer. The fastest charging speed, 45W, is offered on Galaxy S Ultra models starting with the S22 Ultra and later. The battery powering the Galaxy G Fold is rumored to weigh in at under 5000mAh compared to the 5600mAh cell on Huawei's Mate XT. So far, Huawei seems to have the advantage specs-wise over Samsung. The Mate XT display gives users a screen as large as 10.2 inches when fully opened. That compares to the 9.96-inch display on the Galaxy G Fold when that screen is fully open. One key component where Samsung's tri-fold will have an important advantage over Huawei is the application processor (AP). The Mate XT, limited by U.S. sanctions, features the 7nm Kirin 9010 AP. The Galaxy G Fold will be equipped with the powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite AP built using TSMC's 3nm process node. Samsung's first tri-fold smartphone will disappoint in the charging department
Samsung has long been rumored to be outing its first tri-fold smartphone, a la the Huawei Mate XT, later this year. Whether it's going to be announced alongside the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 at its next Unpacked event in New York in early July remains to be seen. Regardless, the device is currently engaged in the global certifications dance, specifically it's been spotted in China's 3C database. This certification has revealed that the phone will only support 25W wired charging. Of course, a certification in China also confirms that the handset will launch over there. The tri-fold smartphone has the model number SM-F9680, where the "0" suffix signifies a phone intended for the Chinese market. Across the world, it will be SM-F968x, with the last character changing depending on market. SM-F968 has previously been associated with the tri-fold device. Unsurprisingly, the 3C certification also reveals the fact that Samsung will ship the tri-fold smartphone without a charger in the box. According to past leaks, the device will have a 9.96" folding screen and a 6.54" cover display, and will weigh 298g. Its release might be very geographically limited. Via

Powys man recieves British Empire Medal for chess club
A Welshpool man who has been using chess to help young people for decades received his British Empire Medal in the Powys town. After being listed among the New Years honours list at the end of 2024, Welshpool resident Steve Rigby received the British Empire Medal at a ceremony in The Westwood Park Hotel. Mr Rigby was presented with his British Empire Medal by the Lord Lieutenant of Powys, Tia Catherine Jones, in her role as the King's representative. He was recognised for his work as part of 3C's chess club in Oldham, having started the club with his friend Roy Williams as a way to give children in the area a chance to do something that would help give them opportunities. He's also taken the game to several corners of the world, listing Uzbekistan, Galveston and Texas as just some of the places he's played chess and gotten to know people through the game. At the time the honour was announced, he said: 'All this publicity isn't me. People are doing this as a gesture to me, I find it very flattering I am absolutely amazed. 'The first thing I thought was about all the people who aren't with us any longer since when we started in 1978 and I immediately thought of them and in a way it is for them. 'In 78 I was a teacher in Chadderton in Oldham, which is not the most fashionable part of the country and had quite a bit of deprivation. 'I always thought that if you give kids the opportunities if you give the families the opportunities they will take it. 'For me chess was a vehicle that allowed me to get to provide opportunities to socialise and learn how to play chess and develop friendships. 'I could take them to places they could experience different venues away from the estates. 'Me and Roy thought this would be a great vehicle to get them out of this academic isolation and get them out there. 'We have had children who have been enormously successful in the chess world but when you have children from quite poor homes and you can take them up and down the country and give them opportunities to see things beyond where they live it's a big thing – it matters.'

More Galaxy Z Fold 7 rumours come in, design details revealed
Samsung is hosting its Galaxy Unpacked event (virtual) tomorrow, May 13, 2025, for the launch of its ultra-thin Galaxy S25 Edge smartphone. However, the company's next Unpacked event is expected in early July, and the latest rumours have emerged, giving us a good idea of what to expect from the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7. The foldable phone is tipped to be Samsung's thinnest and most refined foldable yet. A fresh leak now claims the Galaxy Z Fold 7 could measure just 8.9mm when folded and an incredibly slim 3.9mm when unfolded. If true, this would make it slimmer than any other foldable phone on the market today, including the Oppo Find N5, which currently holds the record at 8.93mm when Galaxy Z Fold 7 is also rumoured to feature a lighter build, a new hinge mechanism for a less visible crease, and an upgraded triple-camera setup led by a 200-megapixel primary sensor.
