From Cummins to Khawaja, a look at Australia's top stars in ICC WTC 2023-25 cycle
London [UK], June 14 (ANI): Australia's golden run under skipper Pat Cummins came to a halt as South Africa defeated them by five wickets to secure their maiden ICC World Test Championship (WTC) title on the back of a masterclass from Aiden Markram.
Cummins' run as a captain started with retaining the Ashes against England away from home after a 2-2 draw, and it was followed by one-sided ICC World Test Championship and ICC Cricket World Cup wins against India. However, everything has an end and it seems, so did Cummins' consistent championship-winning run.
Nonetheless, throughout the 2023-25, the years which spanned this cycle, Australia played some fantastic cricket, with a Border-Gavaskar Trophy win against India at home, their first series win against Asian giants in a decade, being the crowning jewel of it. Let us look at Australia's top stars during this WTC cycle:
-Usman Khawaja
The 38-year-old continues to improve with age and has mastered the ability to grit it out at the crease like no other. He was Australia's top run-getter in this cycle and overall fifth, with 1,428 runs in 20 matches and 39 innings at an average of 39.66. He scored two centuries and six fifties, with the best score of 232 against Sri Lanka. However, in the final, he could score just a duck and six in both innings.
-Steve Smith
The veteran Aussie struggled for consistency during a good chunk of this WTC cycle, however, separating himself from the greats, this epitome of excellence came in clutch when it mattered the most, scoring four centuries in five Tests preceding this title clash and helping Aussies secure the BGT. In 20 matches, he scored 1,403 runs at an average of 41.26, with five centuries and five fifties. His best score was 141. In the final, he played a crucial 66 in the first innings, but failed to fire in the second innings, scoring just 13.
-Travis Head
Head also had patches of poor performance in this cycle, but still managed to score 1,197 runs in 20 matches and 36 innings at an average of 34.20, with a breathtaking strike rate of 80.71. He scored three centuries and five fifties, with the best score of 152. Head peeled off two incredible centuries against India during the BGT, which was the highlight of his run. But he failed in the final, not crossing 20 in both innings.
-Pat Cummins
The captain was a superstar with the ball, taking 80 wickets in 18 matches at an average of 23.48, with best figures of 6/28, which came during the WTC final, the best performance by a captain in a tournament final as a bowler. He took a total of six five-wicket hauls in this cycle, the most by a bowler in this cycle. He ended the cycle as the top wicket-taker.
As a batter, he scored 523 runs in 30 innings at an average of 20.11, with one half-century, proving his mettle as a useful lower-order batter.
-Mitchell Starc
The pace veteran continues to sizzle at big stages even in his mid 30s, taking 77 wickets in 19 matches at an average of 26.89, with best figures of 6/48. He was the third-highest wicket-taker in the WTC cycle. He also took two five-wicket hauls. In the final, he took a total of five wickets, including a scorching opening spell in the first innings and three wickets in the second innings.
-Nathan Lyon
He ended the WTC cycle as the leading spinner and fourth-highest wicket-taker, with 66 wickets in 17 matches at an average of 25.18 and best figures of 6/65. He took a five-wicket haul in the cycle. He went wicketless in the final. (ANI)

The young opener's knock, studded with sixteen boundaries and a six, was instrumental in giving India early control of the match. With Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant (65*) still at the crease, India will look to build on the strong platform on Day 2 as they finished Day 1 with 359/3. In the process, Gill crossed the 2,000-run milestone in Test cricket, while Pant breached the 3,000-run mark. England captain Ben Stokes, who managed to break through, finishing with 2/43. The only other English success came via Brydon Carse, who ended with figures of 1/70. India's 359-run effort surpassed their previous best opening-day score in England, 338/7 at Edgbaston in 2022. The last time a touring team piled on as many runs on Day 1 in England was South Africa's 362/4 at The Oval back in 2003. (ANI)

Paralympic Committee of India unveils logo, mascot for New Delhi World Para Athletics Championship
New Delhi [India], June 20 (ANI): The logo and mascot for the New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships was launched here on Friday along with the launch of the '100 Days to Go' countdown. The event was hosted by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI). A PCI release said that the newly-revealed mascot named Viraaj is a spirited young elephant with a blade prosthesis is a tribute to strength, optimism, and resilience, while the logo captures India's rich heritage, the spirit of para athletics, and the vibrancy of New Delhi as host city. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Vanathi Srinivasan, MLA and Chief Patron of PCI, actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut and Delhi Minister Ashish Sood were among those present. The Chief Minister said that the national capital is honoured to host a global event that celebrates courage, ability, and human potential. 'The logo and mascot beautifully reflect the soul of India and the power of para sport. We will ensure that New Delhi 2025 becomes a landmark for inclusivity and excellence,' she said. Kangana Ranaut, MP, who is Brand Ambassador Of World Para Athletics Championships '25 said she is proud to be part of the event. 'It's not just a mascot -- it's a message. A message of confidence, strength, and representation. I am proud to be part of an event that celebrates those who inspire us with their resilience,' she said. Vanathi Srinivasan said this unveiling is a visual and emotional celebration of our para athletes. India ended the day at a formidable 359/3, thanks to standout performances from captain Shubman Gill, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, and vice-captain Rishabh Pant. 'I think the class of Indian side, no matter how many games they have played, is always going to be pretty good. They're certainly talented cricketers,' Southee said. He reserved special praise for Jaiswal and Gill, both of whom played pivotal roles in setting the tone for India. 'You look at Jaiswal, who's early on in his career he's had a tremendous start to his Test career. And Shubman Gill, in his first Test match as captain, played a great knock as well,' Southee added. 'I think the Indian openers sort of negotiated the first hour reasonably well, KL Rahul left balls well, and Yashasvi Jaiswal played his hand as well throughout,' he added. Southee also praised England test skipper Ben Stokes, citing him as the X-factor for his team. 'He's (Ben Stokes) a real X-Factor player, and we saw that today with a couple of breakthroughs that he was able to make and I guess when he's doing that, it's tough to get the ball out of his hand,' Tim Southee added. The stylish right-hander struck sixteen fours and a maximum in his 175-ball stay, steering India to their highest-ever first-day total in a Test match on English soil. His innings was laced with six fours and two towering sixes, and he looked in full control alongside Gill in their unbroken 138-run partnership.
