New Oman Logistics Academy unveiled

Observer6 hours ago

MUSCAT, JUNE 21
Oman Logistics Academy, a new initiative dedicated to the development of the Sultanate of Oman's logistics services sector, has been established.
The Academy, founded through a public private partnership and in collaboration with specialised international training institutions, aims to prepare national talent and equip them with the professional skills needed to work across all logistics services, including transportation, distribution and warehousing, supply chain management, customs clearance, cargo handling, packing and packaging, railway operations, cold chain transport, as well as logistics technology, contract management, and procurement.
The facility will provide vocational education and training programmes designed to meet the highest global standards. It is expected to close the professional skills gap in the local market, increase Omanisation rates in the logistics sector through training linked employment programmes, and support the Sultanate's ambitions to become a regional logistics hub in the coming years.
The launch aligns with the government's plans and the broader objectives of the Oman Logistics Strategy (SOLS) 2040, which positions the logistics sector as a key driver for diversifying the national economy and reducing reliance on oil derivatives.
Initial programmes will focus on practical training, short courses, and diploma certifications tailored to industry needs. Future plans include the introduction of advanced logistics technology modules and executive level education. The Academy will also work with logistics companies to facilitate internships and hands on training.
The launch coincides with rising investment in Oman's transport and logistics infrastructure, including upgrades to ports, free zones, and industrial cities. By building a qualified local workforce, the initiative is designed to boost the sector's operational efficiency and long term sustainability in line with national development goals.
Oman's logistics sector already plays a significant role in the national economy. It contributed RO 1.7 billion, around 6.1 per cent of GDP, in the first nine months of 2024 and employs over 79,000 workers.
Under SOLS 2040 targets, the sector aims to reach RO 14 billion in GDP contribution, approximately 7 per cent of GDP and create up to 300,000 jobs by 2040. Infrastructure expansion is a key enabler: projects include the Duqm terminal capable of handling 26,000 TEUs, enhanced connectivity at Salalah and Sohar ports, and the planned Gulf Railway link with the UAE. These developments reinforce Oman's position at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe, supporting its ambition to become a world-class logistics hub.

SMEs empowered under equal opportunities initiative

MUSCAT: A new phase of support for Omani entrepreneurs was launched with the fourth edition of the National Equal Opportunities Initiative, spearheaded by the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) and the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (Madayn). The initiative aims to bolster local industries, encourage innovation, and provide small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with access to viable business opportunities. Dr Ayman bin Abdullah al Fudhaili, CEO of the Industrial Innovation Academy, stated that Madayn has empowered SMEs by offering technical support, capacity-building programmes, and strategic partnerships that enhance competitiveness and ensure sustainable growth. One of the Academy's key programmes is "Oman Makers", which supports small factories with diagnostics, consulting, and prototype development. He also highlighted the "Sohar Production" initiative, a manufacturing hub offering reverse engineering services and precision design capabilities that reduce R&D costs. Additionally, the "Business Accelerator", part of the Omani Startups Programme, connects startups with investment opportunities to scale both locally and internationally. Numerous training programmes have also been rolled out, including those in AI applications, plastic machinery operations, legal skills, and traditional ship modelling. The Academy has also identified critical service needs across Madayn's industrial zones—such as maintenance, PR, legal and insurance services—which SMEs can fulfil. These services are estimated to be worth over RO 6.7 million. The launch event saw the signing of contracts between SMEs and various stakeholders to deliver these services. A successful case study was presented to showcase the impact of such collaborations. The event was attended by Shaikh Dr Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy, Chairman of OPAZ, underscoring the government's ongoing commitment to supporting SME growth in the Sultanate of Oman. — ONA

MoL sets mechanisms to appoint one Omani per commercial register

Muscat: The Ministry of Labour (MoL) on Sunday issued mechanisms for enforcing the decision to appoint at least one Omani employee for every commercial registration that has completed one year since its establishment. The decision applies to entities operating under various categories, including foreign investment establishments, enterprises with more than 10 workers, those with fewer than 10 workers, and commercial registrations held by entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals. 1. Foreign investment establishments Foreign investment entities that have completed one year of commercial activity are required to submit a plan for hiring at least one Omani citizen within a three-month period. Direct employment or the submission of a clear operational plan leading to actual recruitment will be accepted. A blanket restriction will apply to all non-compliant foreign investment firms, regardless of the number of expatriate employees on record. Firms will be granted a grace period not exceeding three months from the notification date to rectify their status in line with the decision. This mechanism is established in coordination with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion to align business registration procedures with labour market regulations. 2. Establishments with more than 10 employees Companies employing more than 10 workers must submit an Omanisation plan to hire at least one national within three months. Employment can be direct or through the presentation of an operational plan leading to effective recruitment. The company will be notified electronically via the system that employment is required. If the company fails to respond, restrictions will be imposed on new licences, and the ban will appear automatically in the system. 3. Establishments with fewer than 10 employees Firms employing fewer than 10 workers must also submit a plan to employ at least one Omani within six months. All such firms will be assessed within a six-month period from the notification date to evaluate their contribution to the local added value (LAV). Direct employment or a clear operational plan leading to hiring will be accepted. If the firm's contribution to LAV is established, temporary exemption from the appointment requirement may be granted. Failure to comply within the period will result in restrictions on new licences, and the ban will be reflected electronically in the system. 4. Entrepreneurs and self-employed business owners Establishments owned by entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals will be granted a one-year grace period from the date of notification to adjust their status and fulfil Omanisation requirements. These businesses will undergo a review within a six-month period from the date of notification to assess their contribution to local added value. Non-cardholders of the 'Riyada' certificate may apply for registration with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority to obtain the card and benefit from associated incentives and exemptions.
