10 Classic Muscle Cars for the Middle Class To Buy for Hobby and Investment
Classic muscle cars are getting painfully expensive. The golden-era icons, Chevelle SS 454s, anything with a 426 Hemi, early GTOs, have skyrocketed into collector territory, commanding prices most of us will never touch. Inflation's up, wages aren't, and middle-class buyers are getting squeezed out of the market.
But that doesn't mean the dream is dead.
There's still a sweet spot for gearheads who want real V8 muscle without a six-figure price tag — if you know where to look.
Now, before anyone grabs their pitchforks, yes, we know not all of these are 'true' muscle cars by the strict textbook definition. Some are pony cars, some are Malaise-era holdouts, and a few even have four doors. But they all deliver what matters: classic looks, V8 power (or the potential for it), rear-wheel drive, and serious street presence.
According to Investopedia, roughly 50% of the American population belongs to the middle class, with an income spanning two-thirds to double the national median household income, which was $80,610 in 2023. That means we're working with a realistic classic car budget — typically somewhere between $5,000 and $30,000.
We also want to clarify how we defined 'muscle cars' here. We cast a wide net, including pony cars, Malaise-era survivors, and even a few later-model performance sedans with the same spirit, rear-wheel drive, burly engines, mod potential, and attitude. If it looks the part, sounds the part, and drives like fun, we'll give it a shot.
We hear you, some of these might make your eyebrow twitch. But collector tastes are evolving, and so are the prices. Today's 'not-quite muscle' cars are tomorrow's garage queens. And these are the ones you can still afford.
Let's just get the Mustang out of the way. Sure, some will argue that it's a pony car, not a real muscle car, but barely anyone cares about that distinction anymore. The Mustang is pure Americana; it's a car that brought affordable style, power, and freedom to a generation.
According to Hagerty's Valuation Tool, you can get a 1966 2-door coupe with the 289 V8 for around $22,000 and that's for a car in good condition. It's possible to pay a lot less up front and buy a project instead. Mustangs enjoy an absolutely mahoosive selection of aftermarket parts, so you can essentially turn it into the car of your dreams.
Gearheads tend to focus on the third-gen Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda, so the second-generation Barracuda is kind of overlooked. That's a shame, because this really is a cool muscle car in its own right. On the plus side, being overlooked also makes it relatively affordable, so it's feasible for regular people to get their hands on one.
Hagerty reckons a '68 Barracuda 2-door hardtop coupe in good condition and fitted with the 318 V8 should cost just under $16,000. That's a bargain! Those looking for a restoration object can probably get that price closer to $10,000.
Many muscle car enthusiasts used to turn their noses up at the Chevrolet Nova, but I think it has aged well. It offers classic styling and a cool design, and with the right engine, it makes all the right noises and goes fast enough to get us in trouble. Oh, and it's also affordable!
Our friends over at Hagerty say we can buy a '71 Nova SS with the 270-hp 350 V8 for less than $30,000. If that's too much, or you want a project, I suggest the 1975 Nova SS instead. It may only have a 110-hp 262, but it can be yours for roughly $11,000. Then, you can spend the money you saved on an LS swap and force sports cars to dine on your dust as the light turns green.
Much like the Nova, the Plymouth Duster has traditionally been viewed as a second-tier classic muscle car, and that's reflected in the prices. Hagerty's Valuation Tool shows that it's possible to get a 2-door coupe in good condition for less than $28,000. That's for a car with the 340 V8 pushing out 275 American workhorses. You'd better hurry up, though, as prices have increased nearly 5% in the last year.
Bargain hunters should check out the 1976 Duster instead, as it'll only set you back roughly $14,000. Being a Malaise Era car, its 360 V8 only churns out 220 hp, but that's easily fixed with an engine swap or some aftermarket performance parts.
We mentioned the Ford Mustang earlier, but what if you're looking for something that offers all the same things, but with added exclusivity... and for less money? What you want is the Mercury Cougar!
It's built on the same platform as the 'Stang, and it's just as cool as its Ford cousin, but it looks different — which means you'll have more people staring and asking about your car. According to Hagerty, it's possible to pick up a 1968 Mercury Cougar in good condition for as little as $15,800.
In 1970, Chevrolet released the most iconic Chevelle ever in the form of the SS 454 LS6, a rare beast with an astonishing 450 hp. As you may have already guessed, there's no way we'll get that one on our budget — unless it's a wreck and total basket case.
However, if we opt for the far less iconic 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle Heavy Chevy, Hagerty informs us we can get away with paying just $17,200. Granted, it doesn't have the same design or engine as the SS454, but it still looks cool, and the 307 V8 spits out 200 hp along with a glorious soundtrack.
So far, we've covered some really cool old-school muscle cars, and while they're affordable compared to the more collectible models, they're not dirt cheap! If your budget is tighter than Mick Jagger's pants, those cars may be out of reach. However, there's still hope.
The 1980s had a lot to offer, but in terms of muscle cars, that era definitely wasn't the best. The Malaise Era had wreaked havoc on the industry, and the muscle segment was still reeling from the effects, but by the late 1980s, things were starting to pick up. Hagerty claims it's possible to get a 1988 Camaro with a 5.0-liter V8 for just $5,400. If you're willing to put in some time, money, and elbow grease, you can easily make that money back, as immaculate base models are listed for as much as $21,000 on Cars.com.
Before the Impala SS arrived in the mid-1990s, muscle car purists would never have accepted a 4-door sedan, but after being starved of proper high-performance models for a couple of decades, they welcomed it with open arms.
The 7th-gen was the first car to wear the Impala badge since 1985. It was based on the Chevy Caprice, and under the hood, it had a Corvette-derived 5.7-liter LT1 V8, sending a respectable 260 hp to the rear wheels. Prices went up for a few years but have now dropped around 6% in the last 12 months, and Hagerty informs us that an Impala SS in good condition costs around $17,000.
The second-gen Dodge Charger has appeared in movies and TV shows such as Bullitt, The Dukes of Hazzard, and the Fast & Furious franchise. It's become such an icon that finding one for reasonable money is nigh on impossible — especially if you want the R/T model with the 440 or 426 Hemi engine.
However, all is not lost. Those willing to give the third-gen Charger a chance can get their hands on a bargain. Hagerty's Valuation Tool tells us a 1971 base model with the 318 engine can be had for $19,300. That's a $10,000+ saving compared to a base model from the year before.
In 1993, Ford introduced the first SVT Cobra Mustang, built on the Fox body and with the "5.0" 4.9-liter engine under the hood. Three years later, they replaced the aging powerplant with the new aluminum 4.6-liter DOHC modular unit.
Checking out Hagerty's Valuation Tool tells us this car can be had for a song these days. Its value has dropped over 15%, and prices for cars in good condition now sit around the $ 11,500 mark. That's not bad for a car that can even be used as a daily driver!
Pontiac introduced the Firebird Trans Am WS6 in 1996, and it only had a short 6-year run, which has made it somewhat sought-after by collectors. According to Hagerty, it had a Corvette-derived LT1 small-block V8 with 305 hp, although the following year, it received an LS1 with 310 horses.
With giant nostrils on the hood and generally aggressive styling, it certainly looked the part. Hagerty also says prices have dropped 5%, so you can get behind the wheel of this monster if you're willing to part with $15,100.
It is possible for us mere mortals to get behind the wheel of a real classic muscle car without breaking the bank or having to settle for the quasi-muscle cars of the Malaise Era.
If you're looking for a hobby or a project, you can get away with spending very little money upfront, and seeing as many of these classics are becoming more collectible, it can even be called an investment.

Hopes Of Lower Tariffs Against European Cars Are Fading Fast
One of the biggest promises of President Donald J. Trump's electoral race was to impose tariffs on foreign imports, and shortly after he was inaugurated for the second time, "tariffs" quickly became one of the buzzwords of his presidency. When it comes to cars, just about anything produced outside of American borders is going to get a lot more expensive, and due to vastly complex international supply chains, even domestically produced products could be impacted. But there was a glimmer of hope that the president would change - or at least soften - his stance against America's allies in Europe. European Union leaders had publicly expressed this expectation, citing a history of cooperation. However, as the July 9 deadline for tariffs to be further increased approaches, hope is fading, reports Reuters. The publication spoke to an anonymous official who reportedly noted that hopes of relief are fading faster now that tariffs have come into effect: "10% is a sticky issue. We are pressing them, but now they are getting revenues." A second source reportedly said the EU still would not accept the baseline rate but acknowledged that it would be difficult to change or abolish the measure. The European Union has also publicly declared that it would not accept double-digit tariffs as the United Kingdom has, but U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has ruled out the idea of any tariffs being lowered under the 10 percent baseline. What makes this worse is that the tariffs don't only apply to finished products; steel and aluminum from Europe face a 50 percent tariff, and that doesn't even include the standalone 25 percent tariff on foreign cars. The good news is that Europe, with a trade surplus of $236 billion with the U.S., needs to continue doing business with the largest economy in the world, so your local BMW dealer isn't closing up shop anytime soon. An EU official is quoted by Reuters as saying that the 10% baseline rate would "not massively erode competitive positions, especially if others receive the same treatment." And although hope of a compromise is fading, it hasn't been extinguished just yet. As noted by CarScoops, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has confirmed that negotiations are still underway, despite President Trump's assertion earlier this week that the EU hadn't been fair thus far. "We're talking, but I don't feel that they're offering a fair deal yet," said President Trump. "They're either going to make a good deal or they'll just pay whatever we say they have to pay." Von der Leyen said, "It's complex, but we are advancing - that is good - and I push hard to pick up more speed. So we are mixed in the negotiations, and we will see what the end brings." The United States government is adamant that its long-standing partners are benefitting more from the status quo than America is, and that mindset means that any price increases as a result of tariffs on EU imports will likely not be small. That said, automakers are working to find ways of absorbing as much of the financial strain as possible, and one way of doing that is by pushing sales of existing inventory with incentives and employee pricing offers. Report: Maserati Under Threat of Being Sold by Parent Company
According to a new report published by Reuters, the storied Italian performance powerhouse, Maserati, may be headed toward an uncertain future. The newswire states that "two sources familiar with the matter" told them that parent company Stellantis is exploring a potential sale of the Trident as part of a broader review of its massive portfolio of 14 distinct automotive brands. Discussions regarding Maserati began before Antonio Filosa was named the automaker's new CEO last month. Filosa's first day as CEO of Stellantis is Monday, June 23, where he will take the helm as Carlos Tavares's formal successor. Tavares, who led Stellantis from its inception, stepped down in December amid disappointing U.S. sales and inventory struggles and growing internal and external pressure to reassess the company's direction. Stellantis Chairman John Elkann has a plate and a half full when it comes to overseeing the company's wide range of global brands, which include the likes of Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Peugeot, and Alfa Romeo. The company is under pressure to streamline its operations and invest wisely. Stellantis is a publicly traded company listed on the stock exchanges of New York, Paris, and Milan, and financially savvy investors and analysts think that trimming down the 14-brand lineup could boost Stellantis' margins. Back in April, they brought in McKinsey & Co., a consulting firm based in New York, to examine the impact of new U.S. tariffs and explore options for Maserati and Alfa Romeo. According to the sources cited by Reuters, selling one or both brands is on the table, but any decisions are still in the early phases. In an emailed statement to Autoblog, a Maserati spokesperson provided the following statement: "A spokesperson for Stellantis stated: 'Respectfully, Maserati is not for sale.'" Additionally, a McKinsey spokesperson told Autoblog in a separate emailed statement that they "have no comment for this story." The timing of the Trident's review coincides with its efforts to position itself to navigate some significant industry challenges. Chinese brands and their affordable, tech-forward offerings are eating into the European market share. Like other European automakers, Stellantis is also trying to navigate the steep U.S. import tariffs recently imposed by President Donald Trump, which can greatly impact import brands like Maserati and the expensive motors it imports in smaller numbers. Unlike Stellantis brands like Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler, no Maserati comes from a production facility in North America; all of Maserati's U.S. lineup is exclusively imported from Italy. Maserati's performance has been underwhelming, as it faces tough ground in its key markets. According to Maserati Chief Executive Officer Santo Ficili, about 35% to 40% of its customers are American. In 2024, Maserati posted an adjusted operating loss of €260 million ($298 million) as it sold just 11,300 units, with 4,819 of those cars reaching drivers in the United States. One of the sources who talked to Reuters said that Stellantis is starting to realize it has more brands than it can really focus on, adding that it needs to "set priorities" with the matter. They also report that some board members are split on this scenario: some think selling Maserati is the best move, while others worry that getting rid of its only luxury brand would hurt the company's reputation. This is not the first time that Maserati has been speculated to be sold. Notably, last year, comments from former Stellantis CFO Natalie Knight suggested that the Trident may be on the way out at the 14-brand automaker, which has sincebeen refuted. However, what we solidly know is that Maserati and Alfa Romeo's brand CEO said that it has a turnaround plan as soon as Filosa takes the helm on Monday, the 23rd. In a June 5 interview with Reuters, he not only denied that Stellantis was selling Maserati, but he also expressed optimism over the future of the Trident and that Filosa will back potential plans, which include new products on the horizon. EV tax credits are out in budget bill, but House and Senate clash on how fast to kill key incentive
President Donald Trump is moving forward on his promise to end the $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, but it's up to Republicans in Congress to decide whether the cutoff date comes at the end of 2026 or much earlier that year. Competing versions of the incentive rollback in the House and Senate are now up for negotiation, with the House version offering to continue the credit for smaller EV and PHEV makers through the end of 2026 while cutting off bigger ones at the end of this year. The provisions are part of proposals for Trump's 'big, beautiful' budget bill. The Senate version, released from the Finance Committee on June 16, treats all automakers the same by ending the EV tax credit within 180 days of the bill's passage. That proposal would also cut the EV leasing credit immediately for vehicles that don't meet local content rules and in 180 days for those that do. A $7,500 incentive would end this year for automakers that reach a quota of 200,000 electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids sold since 2010 under a House Republican proposal for the Trump administration's budget bill. Those under the cap remain eligible through 2026. S&P Global Mobility registration data from January 2015 to April 2025 gives a rough idea of where automakers stand. The Senate proposal would also end a $4,000 used-vehicle EV tax credit after 90 days. 'I think the Senate version is worse, totally cold turkey, and the lease thing is so important,' said Mike Murphy, a Republican political consultant and CEO of the American EV Jobs Alliance, a pro-EV lobbying group. 'Bottom line is the Senate is really trying to put a stake in the heart of EV subsidies.' While both rollback plans will likely reduce consumer demand and automaker investments by also phasing out credits for battery production, the House version gives some automakers more time to build on their modest EV sales, analysts say. The House proposal does that by returning to the quota-based program from 2010 to 2022 that phased out the credits once an automaker reached sales of 200,000 electric models, including battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. With the proposed revival of that mechanism, automakers exceeding that threshold would lose access to the credit Dec. 31 while those still under the cap would have until the end of 2026. The result could be a short-term rush by consumers to take advantage of the tax break, followed by a decline in demand. 'Although some brands may have a longer runway with the House's proposal for discontinuing the EV credits, the cap would eliminate EVs from many of the industry's most popular brands,' said Brent Gruber, executive director at J.D. Power's EV practice. 'The Senate's version may spur EV sales in the short term, but it, like the House's version, ultimately may jeopardize EV adoption.' The current tax credit, signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2022 as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, doesn't use quotas. It does impose North American content rules and battery-material requirements, but leased EVs get the credit without having to comply with those rules. EV makers already exceeding 200,000 in U.S. registrations include Tesla, General Motors, Ford Motor Co., Hyundai, Volkswagen, BMW and Stellantis, according to data from S&P Global Mobility that covers the period from January 2015 to April 2025. EV makers who are safely under the quota include startups Rivian Automotive and Lucid Motors, electric vehicle latecomers Honda and Subaru, low-volume brands such as Mazda and Mitsubishi, and sports car manufacturers including Porsche, McLaren and Maserati. The registration data from S&P Global Mobility does not include the years 2010 to 2014 when EV and plug-in hybrid sales were still relatively modest. Ultimately, it would be up to the IRS to determine which automakers would get cut off at the end of this year and which would still be eligible in 2026, analysts said. Also, the House and Senate could negotiate a different set of rules from their original proposals for the EV credit phaseout. In response to questions from Automotive News, Mercedes-Benz said its cumulative EV and PHEV sales in the U.S. were approaching 150,000 as of mid-June. Mercedes said interest in 'sustainable mobility' remains strong, and it will offer a variety of powertrains to meet consumer needs. 'The pace of transformation is determined by market conditions and the needs of our customers,' Mercedes said. 'Into the 2030s, we can flexibly offer vehicles with both fully electric drivetrains and electrified high-tech combustion engines.' Mercedes said it supports 'a more orderly phase out of the existing federal EV incentives,' a stance shared by the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents most automakers selling vehicles in the U.S. According to J.D. Power survey data, a majority of EV buyers cited tax credits and incentives as a key reason for purchasing a new electric vehicle in 2024 and this year. 'For customers of Honda and Volkswagen, on average, the tax credit was the No. 1 purchase reason. For brands like Tesla, Cadillac and Chevrolet, among others, tax credits were amid the top three most influential purchase reasons,' Gruber said. Nissan, an EV pioneer with the Leaf hatchback in 2010, said EV adoption will continue to grow despite the loss of the federal tax credit. 'We anticipate continued growth in the EV market, driven by strong demand and the many benefits that EVs provide,' Nissan said. 'However, we acknowledge that the pace of growth may slow compared to earlier projections.' In addition to targeting the consumer EV tax credit, the Trump administration has taken steps to roll back federal emissions standards and withhold funding for a nationwide charging network. 'If tax credits are abolished, the price competitiveness of BEVs and PHEVs relative to internal combustion engine vehicles is generally expected to decline,' Mazda said. BMW said that a change in the tax credits wouldn't affect its strategy of offering different powertrains for different consumer needs. 'From the start, BMW's strategic approach has been one of 'technology openness,' where we offer our customers the ability to choose the vehicle that best suits their lifestyle — whether that be a highly efficient internal combustion vehicle, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or battery electric vehicle," the automaker said. Toyota, which has focused on hybrids over fully electric vehicles, said the loss of the EV and PHEV tax credits would not have a significant impact on its business. 'While there may be a small impact on leases in the short term, the impact to our business will not be substantial,' Toyota said. 'We feel a strong, competitive product with a more robust national charging infrastructure will drive sales when consumers are ready to purchase a BEV.' Some EV fans expect sales to suffer without the tax credit but mostly on lower-cost electric vehicles where the credit allows monthly payments similar to gasoline vehicles and hybrids. Some buyers will still prefer EVs even at a higher price. 'I don't want to say the tax credit had no impact. Clearly it did,' said Loren McDonald, chief analyst at EV consultancy Paren. 'But I've always believed that it was 10 percent, 20 percent maximum of the market where it actually converted people to EVs.' Some EV skeptics welcome the return to a more level playing field where consumers, not government regulations, drive the auto business. 'Once the smoke clears and the incentives clear, I think you'll see a pullback from how much the automakers are investing in this technology and the number of consumers who are buying EVs,' said Karl Brauer, executive analyst at iSeeCars. He said EVs have advantages in refinement, but range and charging limit their appeal. 'I believe that financial viability is supposed to be a cornerstone of capitalism, which is supposed to be the cornerstone of the U.S. economy,' Brauer said.
