Anduril plans footprint in Poland's red-hot combat drone market

WARSAW, Poland — As the Polish military ramps up its Drone Force, U.S. defense-technology company Anduril Industries is working to expand its foothold in Poland.
'We're still at an early stage of looking at things and different options,' Brian Schimpf, the co-founder and CEO of Anduril Industries, said at a June 9 press briefing in Warsaw. 'There's amazing software and manufacturing here, and lots of great people. We could potentially launch production in Poland with a partner.'
Anduril Industries' portfolio includes the Altius multi-mission loitering munition, the Barracuda range of autonomous air vehicles, and the Copperhead family of autonomous underwater vehicles. The company says its solutions are run by Lattice, an AI-powered, open operating system designed to provide the drones with autonomy.
Schimpf said one of the reasons Anduril Industries is evaluating a potential expansion in Poland is related to the country's intense efforts to upgrade its military and gain new capabilities, and the government's decisiveness in advancing new programs.
Poland has accelerated its military modernization efforts in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of its neighbor Ukraine in February 2022.
Launched in 2025, the Polish Drone Force will consist of unmanned aerial vehicles, and potentially other unmanned systems, of various sizes.
The Polish ministry inked a framework agreement with local private defense company WB Group in May to acquire some 10,000 units of the Warmate loitering munition, with deliveries foreseen until 2035.
In December 2024, Warsaw signed a deal worth some $310 million to acquire a number of MQ-9B Sky Guardian drones from General Atomics that are to be delivered by the first quarter of 2027.

Poland's Gaz-System secures $593m loan for floating LNG terminal in Gdansk

Polish pipeline operator Gaz-System is set to receive a loan of 2.2bn zlotys ($593m) to develop the onshore section of the country's first floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), reported Reuters. Scheduled for completion in 2028, the FSRU will be situated in the Bay of Gdansk and is expected to play a critical role in Poland's energy infrastructure. The project will establish infrastructure that will facilitate the offtake of increased volumes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) transported by sea, followed by regasification and delivery to the National Transmission System. The FSRU will be capable of LNG unloading, in-process storage, regasification of LNG and additional services. The loan from state-owned bank BGK is backed by EU funds and has a repayment period of 25 years. The funds will be directed towards constructing a 250km pipeline designed to link the floating LNG (FLNG) terminal to the central gas network of Poland, as detailed by BGK deputy president Marta Pustula. Earlier this year, Gaz-System completed the expansion of its LNG terminal in Świnoujście. This expansion increased the terminal's regasification capacity to 8.3 billion cubic metres (bcm), catering to nearly half of the annual gas demand of Polish consumers. In March last year, Gaz-System signed an agreement to acquire Gas Storage Poland from Polish refiner Orlen. The agreement bolsters Gaz-System's Polish gas market presence, complementing its Yamal pipeline and LNG terminal operations. Gaz-System also announced plans in April this year to modernise the Hermanowice gas metering station. This upgrade is a result of technical discussions with the Ukrainian gas transmission system operator (TSO) regarding the GCP GAZ-SYSTEM/UA TSO interconnection and aims to improve transmission system capacity, especially towards Ukraine. At least when it is used to help make work more efficient and leisure more, erm, leisurely. However, when AI is misused or employed for nefarious purposes, it becomes a concern for all of us. We've already seen this when the first big story broke as an AI attack on Gmail users went viral in 2024. Things have changed since then, and not for the better, as the latest research reveals. Now, half of your spam is generated by AI, and cyberattacks are increasingly using AI-powered methods. Here's what you need to know. It's official: more than half of the spam that you receive has been created using AI tools. That's the finding of newly published research, a collaboration between Barracuda and researchers from Columbia University and the University of Chicago, which found that, in April 2025, the actual number was 51%. This isn't altogether surprising. After all, AI does a better job, for the most part, in producing less spelling and grammatical errors, ensuring that linguistically the messages are understandable across geographies, and can be tweaked to have just the right tone to convince the reader to respond. And that, dear reader, is concerning. Not from the perspective of spamming in the broader sense, but rather when it comes to cybersecurity implications, as such techniques are applied to phishing attacks. The same report found that, already, 14% of the business email compromise attacks analyzed were AI-generated. Extrapolate that across all phishing attack scenarios, and I'm sorry to say, the situation will soon become untenable. Wei Hao, a PhD student at Columbia University, and one of the researchers behind the report, said that 'spam showed the most frequent use of AI-generated content in attacks, outpacing use in other attack types significantly over the past year.' What the research also found was that AI-generated emails didn't differ significantly from human-generated attack emails, at least not in terms of engendering a sense of urgency. It appears that AI, like human attackers, recognises the effectiveness of this method in persuading a recipient to act and become a victim. 'Urgency is a deliberate tactic commonly used to exert pressure and elicit an unthinking response from the recipient,' Hao said, which suggested 'attackers are primarily using AI to refine their emails and possibly their English rather than to change the tactics of their attacks.'
