Tom Hanks' daughter reveals childhood of 'violence' and 'deprivation'
Elizabeth Ann Hanks opened up about her turbulent early years which she says were filled with "violence" and "deprivation" in her upcoming book, The 10: A Memoir of Family and The Open Road.

The "You've Got Mail" actor said daughter E.A. Hanks' memoir is "a pride" because she's been "very open" about it. In "The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road," she looks back on her childhood and parents' divorce, alleging abuse perpetrated by her late mother (and Hanks' first wife), Susan Dillingham.
"She's a knockout, always has been," Hanks told Access Hollywood on the red carpet premiere of "The Phoenician Scheme."
The younger Hanks' memoir is wide-ranging, both a quest to understand her mother and a cross-country road trip. She writes about her time living in a van on her journey, political and sociological issues in the U.S. and the regional differences in the people she meets along the way. Hanks also tries to parse between fact and fiction in her family history, including a story about her maternal grandfather's possible connection to a murder.

The "Forrest Gump" actor called his daughter a "bold, journalistic, literate mind," something he's known since she was young.
"If you've had kids, you realize that you see who they are when they're about six weeks old," Hanks said. He continued: "I'm not surprised that my daughter had the wherewithal as well as the curiosity, as well as, I'm going to say, perhaps, the shoot-herself-in-the-foot kind of wherewithal in order to examine this thing that I think she was very honest about. We all come from checkered, cracked lives, all of us."
Hanks and Dillingham, who acted under the name Samantha Lewes, divorced in 1987 after nine years of marriage. Together, they shared E.A. (born Elizabeth Anne) and Colin Hanks. He married actress Rita Wilson the following year. Dillingham died of lung cancer in 2002 at age 49 and had struggled with mental illness and addiction. Though her mother was never diagnosed, Hanks believes she was bipolar, she told People in an interview.
Her father gained primary custody in her early teen years, following a childhood living with her mother filled with "emotional" and "physical violence."
"As the years went on, the backyard became so full of dog (expletive) that you couldn't walk around it, the house stank of smoke. The fridge was bare or full of expired food more often than not, and my mother spent more and more time in her big four-poster bed, poring over the Bible," Hanks writes. "One night, her emotional violence became physical violence, and in the aftermath I moved to Los Angeles, right smack in the middle of the seventh grade."
Hanks told People she was afraid to tell her dad how bad the situation became, calling herself a "protector" of her mom's secrets. Now Tom, a novelist and writer in his own right, is supportive of her memoir, she says: "I'm equally my father's daughter because he taught me to tell the truth and move forward."

'Superman''s David Corenswet Recalls ‘Intense' Time He Screen-Tested for the Movie During Wife's Pregnancy (Exclusive)
David Corenswet tells PEOPLE that he and his wife had to keep two big secrets when they found out she was pregnant and he was cast as Superman "We had these two quite huge secrets that we just had between the two of us," he says Corenswet is PEOPLE's latest cover star as the new Superman movie is poised to take flight this summerFor Superman star David Corenswet, 2023 was a busy year: He learned he'd be a father and landed the part of the Man of Steel. In PEOPLE's new cover story, the Philadelphia native, 31, recalls going through the 'intense' time with wife Julia, 34. 'She told me that she was pregnant two days after I found out I was going to screen test for Superman,' says Corenswet. 'For the first several months of her pregnancy, as is sort of protocol, we weren't telling anybody. We had these two quite huge secrets that we just had between the two of us. And that was intense.' 'For a period we had just each other for these two huge things,' continues Corenswet, who says Julia's due date originally coincided with when he was set to start filming in early 2024. 'It was very close. It wasn't direct, but it was still very close. But it was just having to do two big unknown things at the same time. And they were both great things,' he says. The good-natured Corenswet found the lighter side of the situation. 'She gained about 40 pounds while she was pregnant and in the same period I gained about 40 pounds gaining weight for Superman,' he recalls. 'I started snoring and had to use her pregnancy pillow.' The actor says he was at his home, on a break from making the 2024 movie Twisters, when he got the call from Superman director James Gunn telling him he had been cast in the lead role. 'It started with, 'Hey David, it's James Gunn.' And I said, 'Can you prove that?' I guess in the moment before when I saw the unknown 310 number, I thought, 'I'm pretty sure this is James telling me whether or not I got the part, but it could be anybody from Los Angeles who has my number and maybe somebody's going to play a prank on me,' " Corenswet says of the phone call that changed his life. 'Anyway, I think he appreciated that and he said, 'That's a good point. I'm calling to offer you the role of Superman.' And I said, 'Well, you're the only person who could do that, so it must be you,'' Corenswet continues. Now he's hoping he did the role justice. 'I feel much more a sense of responsibility than a sense of accomplishment having done the role. I also know that so much in life and especially the life of an actor is up to chance and good luck, and certainly you get what you make of your situation,' he says. 'I just think of it as a great stroke of luck and I better do everything I can to earn the responsibility,' Corenswet continues. Heather Graham navigates the pressures of staying youthful in Hollywood with ease. Graham shared her secrets with Retreat Magazine about her philosophy when it comes to aging. One of my affirmations is: 'This is the best time of my life.'' During an interview with People in April, Graham admitted to being a happier person after she turned 55. 'I feel like as I get older, I just care less about things that don't matter. Everyone gets upset sometimes, but I think that I'm happier. Or if you have any difficult people in your life, it can help you learn how to deal with them better, in a more loving way, and most importantly, to take better care of yourself,' she told Retreat Magazine. During her interview, Graham shared that she is 'ahead of her time' when it comes to embracing her sexuality. 'Nowadays, so many women are enjoying their sexuality, but when I was coming up, there was definitely judgment around that. It's great to watch younger women feel freer to be sexual and not to worry about cultural bias,' she said. 5 Along with her wellness secrets, Graham does not drink or do drugs. She noted that her parents 'were part of a generation that didn't believe in therapy or discussing personal things, so I never felt I could talk to them.' I also have a loft in New York,' she said, noting that her West Coast home 'has views of the Pacific.'
