Falcons miss out on All-Pro wide receiver Julio Jones in 2011 NFL redraft
Pro Football Focus' 2011 NFL redraft sees Falcons miss out on All-Pro wide receiver Two moves have really defined the Atlanta Falcons over the last two decades. The first move was selecting Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan with the third overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft. Three years later, the Falcons traded up to the sixth overall pick in the 2011 draft to select Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones. Ryan and Jones formed one of the most dynamic duos in NFL history. Both players retired as Atlanta's franchise statistical leaders at their respective positions. Jones is a lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, while Ryan has a decent chance to be voted into the league's most exclusive club. But what would have happened if the Falcons never drafted Jones? In Pro Football Focus' 2011 NFL redraft, the seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver didn't even make it out of the top five. So instead of adding the most productive receiver in franchise history, the Falcons stayed at pick No. 27 and drafted cornerback Jimmy Smith. Smith's size and man-to-man ability were valuable assets during his 11-year career in Baltimore. He recorded an 81.5 PFF coverage grade and hauled in 14 regular-season interceptions and one postseason pick across that span. Smith also played very well on a small workload in Super Bowl 47, forcing two incompletions and earning a 92.7 PFF coverage grade. -- PFF's Max Chadwick, Dalton Wasserman and Trevor Sikkema Smith spent his entire career in Baltimore, and despite not making a Pro Bowl, he was a dependable starter that helped the Ravens secure the Super Bowl in 2013. The former Colorado defensive back appeared in 128 games (90 starts), recording 14 interceptions and 74 passes defended. The 2011 redraft saw Jones selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the fourth overall pick. The Bengals originally took wide receiver A.J. Green at this spot, but PFF felt Jones was the better player throughout his NFL career. There was a big debate heading into the 2011 NFL Draft over whether A.J. Green or Julio Jones was the top wide receiver prospect. The Bengals ultimately picked Green, who went on to have an excellent career in Cincinnati. However, Jones ended up being the better player. The two-time first-team All-Pro recorded a career 94.7 PFF overall grade and was the second-most-valuable receiver across his 13 seasons, according to PFF WAR. -- PFF's Max Chadwick, Dalton Wasserman and Trevor Sikkema The Falcons still landed a quality player in PFF's redraft scenario, however, it's hard to imagine Ryan ever reaching his MVP potential without Jones as his top weapon. While Atlanta didn't capture the Super Bowl, the team got as close as humanly possible during the 2016 NFL season. As the team prepares for the 2025 season, a new duo has emerged. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and wide receiver Drake London will look to get the Falcons back to the playoffs for the first time since Ryan and Jones departed.

Former Eagles Receiver Given Respect in New Role
Former Eagles Receiver Given Respect in New Role originally appeared on Athlon Sports. At first glance, it's hard to call Olamide Zaccheaus a quality receiver for his work with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. Advertisement The former Atlanta Falcon and Washington Commander caught just 10 passes during his lone season in Philadelphia with two touchdowns. Zaccheaus was used more as a blocker overall but was ignored in the passing game. Last year with Washington, Zaccheaus' numbers improved. He recorded over 500 yards receiving in the nation's capital. Now, the veteran has signed a free-agent deal with the Chicago Bears. Zaccheaus won't be an everydown player in Chicago, but that doesn't mean he can't be impactful. Bill Barnwell of ESPN named the Bears receiver one of the best fourth receivers in the league today. "While Zaccheaus might have been something closer to the second or third wide receiver for the Commanders last season, he is expected to slot in behind DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, and rookie second-round pick Luther Burden III in Chicago," Barnwell said. "Don't be surprised if Zaccheaus is on the field more often than you would expect -- coaches love him." Advertisement It's easy for coaches to love what Zaccheaus brings to the table. Organizations love the veteran's blocking abilities. Zaccheaus isn't a player who complains about not getting the ball, either. It's a good reminder of how important a player like Zaccheaus is for teams around the league. And why the Bears came away with one of the better fourth receivers in the league on the open market this offseason. Saints sign three UFL players
The Saints made official the departures of cornerback Travion Fluellen and running back Xazavian Valladay, who were waived Friday. The Saints also announced three signings. Tight end Seth Green, cornerback Jayden Price and offensive tackle Barry Wesley are joining New Orleans on one-year contracts. Green, 27, played the past two seasons for the UFL's Arlington Roughnecks. In 2025, he caught 13 passes for 150 yards with a touchdown. Green played his college ball at Minnesota from 2017-20 before transferring to Houston in 2021. He caught 13 passes for 157 yards with three touchdowns in his last collegiate season before going undrafted in 2022. He spent two months on the practice squad with Cowboys in 2022 and also participated in Dallas' 2023 training camp and preseason. Price originally signed with the Falcons as a free agent following the 2024 draft out of North Dakota State but did not make the roster. He was a teammate of Green's with the Renegades this spring, recording 27 tackles and half a sack while adding 194 punt return yards and 337 kickoff return yards. In the fall of 2024, Price played one game for the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Wesley played for the Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL in the 2023 spring season coming out of Colorado State, where he played from 2018-21. After the XFL season, he signed with the Falcons and made the practice squad out of the preseason. After competing with the Falcons in the 2024 preseason, Wesley joined the UFL's Birmingham Stallions for the 2025 spring season. He started nine of 11 games played, seeing action at tackle and guard, and was a nominee for the league's Sportsman of the Year award.
