Rob Manfred Admits Donald Trump's Role In MLB Decision on Pete Rose Reinstatement

Newsweek05-06-2025

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred surprised fans of the sport when he announced former star player and manager Pete Rose would once again be eligible for induction into the baseball Hall of Fame.
Rose had received a lifetime ban, which carried over into his eligibility for induction after it was revealed that he had bet on games as a manager with the Cincinnati Reds. But his case for earning induction as a player was clear-cut, as he was one of the most prolific performers the game had ever seen.
In May, Manfred removed Rose and several other deceased players from the ineligible list, explaining that a lifetime ban should not carry over after their deaths. At the time, speculation rose that President Donald Trump had played a large role in that decision, as Trump has long been a vocal supporter of Rose's case for the Hall of Fame. However, Manfred did not underscore any role the president might have played in the decision at the time.
Now, however, Manfred has detailed Trump's influence during a news conference tied to an owners meeting on Wednesday.

"The president was one of a number of voices that was supportive of the idea that this was the right decision," Manfred admitted, per Fox News. "Obviously, I have respect for the office and the advice that he gave I paid attention to, but I had a lot of other people that were weighing in on the topic as well."
Now that Rose as well as Shoeless Joe Jackson have had their lifetime bans lifted, a committee will decide if the players should be inducted into the prestigious hall. Given the recent reversal from the commissioner and strong interest from the president, that induction might be a foregone conclusion.

Giants pitcher Sean Hjelle accused of abuse by wife, MLB investigating

Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants said Major League Baseball is looking into allegations of abuse made by the wife of reliever Sean Hjelle. Caroline Hjelle made a post on TikTok on Friday of her with the couple's two children with a caption that said: 'When my MLB husband abandons us on Mothers Day a week after this (video was taken) once I finally found about his affairs and stopped putting up with his abuse, so I've been raising two boys alone.' The Giants said in a statement Saturday that they are 'aware of these serious allegations' and that MLB is handling it. Manager Bob Melvin said before Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox that Hjelle would be available to pitch. 'Obviously we're aware of it,' Melvin said. 'He told me about it last night. We talked to MLB. At this point, it's in their jurisdiction right now so I really can't comment on it further.' Hjelle took the loss in Friday night's game against the Red Sox, allowing a tiebreaking homer to Ceddanne Rafaela in the sixth inning. Hjelle is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA in six appearances this season. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Yankees righty Clarke Schmidt has a no-hitter through six innings against the Orioles

NEW YORK — New York Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt has held the Baltimore Orioles hitless through six innings Saturday. Schmidt threw 29 pitches in the first inning, when he issued consecutive walks to Jordan Westburg and Gunnar Henderson. He stranded a runner in the fourth after hitting Ryan O'Hearn with a pitch and easily finished the fifth. Schmidt breezed through a nine-pitch fifth and needed eight pitches to get through the sixth. Schmidt has thrown first-pitch strikes to 15 of 21 hitters, struck out five and walked two. Schmidt was at 82 pitches through six innings and held a 8-0 lead. New York has thrown 24 no-hitters in team history. The last was June 28, 2023, in Oakland when Domingo Germán threw the Yankees' major league-leading fourth perfect game. The Orioles have been no-hit 15 times in team history. Baltimore was last held hitless on Aug. 12, 2015, in Seattle by Hisashi Iwakuma. ___ More AP baseball:
