Soundproof booths and mental health days needed for employees, HR experts say
A new report has revealed the changes that need to be made in the workplace to accommodate the needs of the upcoming generation.

HR specialists are encouraging employers to introduce sound-proof work booths and designated mental health days off to cater for the needs of the emerging generation in the workplace.
They recommend creating an environment where everyone can thrive. It includes offering flexible work schedules, promoting regular breaks, and implementing mentorship programmes.

The study commissioned by Benenden Health, which surveyed 500 HR professionals, revealed that a staggering 77% are taking steps to ensure their workplaces are suitable for neurodivergent individuals.

These recommendations were part of a report aimed at highlighting how employers can better support Generation Alpha as they join the workforce.
Benenden Health's Chief People Officer, Mike Hay, stated: "It is important to understand and support neurodivergent individuals, including those within Generation Alpha, who will make up a growing part of the workforce."
"Communication is key," he further added, "creating space for open, two-way conversations where employees feel safe to disclose their needs is essential, especially for those who may have faced stigma in the past."

Dan Harris from the organisation also commented: "Autism diagnosis has increased by almost 800% in 20 years and other neurodivergent diagnoses are also on the rise. Businesses of the future need to adapt to this and are set to fail if they don't bring in measures to support these individuals."
These measures include fostering open dialogue, advocating for regular breaks, and endorsing flexible working schedules.

Mike commented: "In the next five years, the workforce will be the most diverse it has ever been, and we need to acknowledge that it takes time to learn and adapt our workplaces and leadership styles to support everyone's needs."
A substantial 81% acknowledge the significance of these adjustments, suggesting a universal need for every individual to feel supported in order for productivity and creativity to truly thrive.

Over two-thirds have seen an increase in employees asking for reasonable adjustments in the workplace over the past year to meet their needs.
This view was echoed by those aged between 13 and 18, as a survey of 500 teenagers showed six out of 10 know with someone who is neurodivergent. Meanwhile, a fifth speak to their parents about neurodiversity on a regular basis.
More than half of parents believe this openness is attributed to a growing awareness of what neurodiversity is and what adjustments may be needed.

Mike added: "This report is more than research. It is a starting point for meaningful change."

The 49-year old cyclist was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer in 2023 and was told last year that it has spread to his bones and is terminal. ‌ NHS guidance says men over the age of 50 are at highest risk of developing prostate cancer, but Sir Chris wants to help men get screened earlier. ‌ He said: "I was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer at 47. By this age, my prostate cancer was advanced and could have been progressing from when I was 45 or even younger. "With prostate cancer, the earlier you find it, the easier it is to treat. We need the system to change to enable more men to get diagnosed earlier, and stop them getting the news I got." One option is a PSA blood test which checks the level of prostate-specific antigens in the blood, A high reading may be a sign of a prostate condition. Article continues below NHS guidance says these tests are not routinely used as they are not reliable, but men over 50 can ask GPs for one. Sir Chris's comments came after Prostate Cancer UK urged the UK Government for an overhaul of NHS guidelines to encourage GPs to proactively speak to men at high risk from 45 years old. According to the charity, around one in eight men in the UK will get prostate cancer, which occurs when cells in the prostate start to grow in an uncontrolled way and, if not detected early, risks spreading. ‌ Sir Chris added: "I believe men at highest risk, for example men with a family history like me or black men, should be contacted by their GP earlier on to discuss a simple PSA blood test that can check for signs of prostate cancer. Then if there are any issues, they can get it treated it at an earlier stage. "I've told my story to help raise awareness about the most common cancer in men and get more thinking about their risk and what they can do, but it shouldn't all be men's responsibility. "I've faced many challenges in my life, and going public with my prostate cancer diagnosis was certainly one of them. ‌ "I've been incredibly lucky to have so much support from my family, friends and the general public. The kindness has lifted me up and given me a sense of purpose, and I'm committed to taking that forward and using my platform to raise awareness of the most common cancer in men and help more men at risk to come forward and get tested." The Scottish cyclist has launched his own charity cycling challenge, Tour de 4, with the aim of changing perceptions around stage four cancer. The challenge will take place on September 7 in Glasgow with a final registration phase open for riders to sign up. ‌ Speaking about Sir Chris, Laura Kerby, chief executive at Prostate Cancer UK, said: "His bravery and tireless work to raise awareness has already made a huge impact. "In just a few months after Sir Chris went public with his diagnosis last year, over 286,000 people used our online risk checker to learn more about the disease, find out their own risk and learn what they can choose to do about it. "His bravery has inspired so many men to take action, and he has undoubtedly saved lives. Article continues below "One in eight men will get prostate cancer. The earlier it's found, the easier it is to treat - but there's currently no screening programme in the UK. So if, like Sir Chris, you have a family history of the disease, or if you're black, we strongly encourage you to speak to your GP about testing from the age of 45. "We don't think it's right that the responsibility is all on men's shoulders, so we're calling on the Health Secretary to overhaul outdated NHS guidelines so that GPs are empowered to actually start conversations with these men at highest risk." U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has approved waivers for Arkansas, Idaho and Utah - joining Indiana, Nebraska, Texas and Iowa - to amend the statutory definition of food and drink which is eligible for purchase under the program (Picture: Getty Images) SNAP - which stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and which was formerly known as food stamps - is currently claimed by 41.6m Americans on low incomes. Recipients can use their benefits at selected grocery stores and restaurants. According to the USDA they can be used to buy any food for the household, including meat, poultry and fish, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, breads and cereals, snack foods, non-alcoholic drinks and seeds or plants which can be used to produce food. They cannot be used to purchase alcohol, tobacco, vitamins and supplements, pet foods, cleaning supplies or any food which is hot at the point of sale (Picture: Getty Images) However the new restrictions will prevent people from using SNAP to pay for products such as candy bars and potato chips. Sodas and sugary drinks will also face a clampdown, with any non-alcoholic drinks made with water that also contain more than five grams of added sugar, or any amount of artificial sweetener, will be off-limits. Milk-based drinks and fruit juice will not be included in the ban (Picture: Getty Images) The rules will, however vary from one state to the next. In Nebraska, for example, only soda and energy drinks will be banned, whereas in Iowa snacks, candy and sweetened drinks will all be unavailable to purchase with SNAP benefits. Those who claim them will still be able to purchase the items for the time being - as the waivers in Utah, Idaho, Nebraska, Indiana and Iowa will take effect from January 1 2026, while the new rules will apply in Arkansas from July 1 2026. Rollins said in a statement: 'The Trump Administration is unified in improving the health of our nation. America's governors have proudly answered the call to innovate by improving nutrition programs, ensuring better choices while respecting the generosity of the American taxpayer' (Picture:) Meanwhile Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr has advised all state governors to follow suit and eliminate sugary drinks from the SNAP program, saying 'Taxpayer dollars should never bankroll products that fuel the chronic disease epidemic' (Picture:) It follows Kennedy Jr's push to have synthetic dyes removed from US food, in his bid to make the nation's diet healthier. The politician said in a press release: 'For too long, some food producers have been feeding Americans petroleum-based chemicals without their knowledge or consent.
