Family identifies 22-year-old woman as motorcyclist killed on University Bridge crash in Saskatoon
Family have confirmed that 22-year-old Speirious Prokulevich was the woman killed May 29 in a motorcycle crash on Saskatoon's University Bridge.
Dustin Prokulevich says his younger sister died on her birthday.
"It was her 22nd birthday, yep. We had a barbecue on the 28th for her, so it was nice to spend one last day with her before the tragedy happened," he said in an interview Monday.
Dustin said that Speirious loved riding and had recently upgraded to a new bike.
"She passed away doing what she loved."
The crash between a car and the motorcycle happened at around 7:30 a.m. CST and led to the shut-down of the University Bridge at the peak of Saskatoon's morning commute. Traffic restrictions on the bridge and access streets stayed in place until late afternoon.
The crash happened near the downtown end of the bridge, with Prokulevich's bike sliding about 100 metres to a curb on 25th Street. Police are still piecing together all the details of what happened.
Dustin said his remaining siblings — two brothers and two sisters — are still coming to terms with their loss. They met at the hospital after the crash.
"My family was surrounded around her, we just spent the last couple minutes with her … it was incredibly sad."
He said Speirious was working to become a licensed optician and excited by her career prospects and the future. He said she'll be remembered most, though, for her love of family.
"She had a special relationship with every single one of her siblings," he said.

‘Father did not resurface' after pushing daughter to shore in Lake Erie

'She was in a panic, and everybody was looking for him,' says Alida Cordeiro, a mother and former lifeguard who was on the beach at the time. 'There was a lot of shock, and they couldn't contact family members that were still not at the beach or at home. It was a really, scary situation.' According to Cordeiro, the girl was looking for her phone after getting out of the water to call for help. Another witness said the father helped push her toward shore before going under. 'It breaks my heart,' Cordeiro added. 'I'm here with my kids and my husband was here, and we're probably the same age.' 'When we got here today earlier this morning [the waves] were about a good solid metre and a half, and I noticed that the water was really cold. It's a bad mix for people going out there getting too cold and then getting extra tired. Where when the waves are warm, people can swim out there longer without getting as tired.' Decorte echoed that sentiment, 'With the water not being warm yet, it's hard to swim in,' he said. 'So maybe that played some of the part too in the waves.' Early in the evening, OPP brought ATVs to use on the long stretch of beach as the search continues.

Woman charged with breaking into Tecumseh home after call from concerned citizen

Officers were dispatched to a suspected break and enter on Centennial Drive at 5:40 p.m. on Friday. When an officer arrived on scene, they located a person matching the description, the individual attempted to flee on foot but was taken into custody. Police search for suspect believed to be involved in string of Halifax break-ins
Halifax police are looking for a suspect in a string of break-ins. (Source: Halifax Regional Police) Police in Halifax are searching for a man they believe is involved in a string on break and enters. According to police, several residences in the 2500 block of Summer Street were broken into and had items stolen between June 13 and 16. Police describe the suspect as a man wearing eyeglasses, a dark jacket, a white hoodie, dark pants, black and white shoes and a white baseball cap or bucket-style hat. The suspect is believed to be the same suspect involved in another string of break-ins in the 200 block of Waterfront Drive in Bedford between June 6 and 8.
