Karna Kadur maintains pace to extend lead in APRC
Chennai, Apr 26 (UNI) Bengaluru ace Karna Kadur came up with a mature drive to open a sizable lead in the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship promoted by Vamcy Merla which is part of the Indu Chandhok Memorial 48th South India Rally, here on Saturday.
With only four Special Stages to be run on the morrow, Kadur and his co-driver Musa Sherif have victory in their sights.
Kadur leads his Arka Motorsports team-mate and the Delhi-Himachal Pradesh combination of Harkrishan Wadia and Kunal Kashyap by over a minute.
In third place is their team-mate and former National champion Amittrajit Ghosh (Ashwin Naik) who nursed his patched-up Volkswagen Polo, a late replacement for his Mahindra XUV 300 which blew
its engine during a test run a few days before the event.
In the INRC category of the Blueband Fmsci Indian National Rally Championship Round-1 powered by Vamcy Merla, Kadur leads Ghosh with Suhem Kabeer (Vinay Padmashali) in third spot.
About his performance today, Kadur said: 'I was a bit conservative in the first loop, especially the
first Special Stage (AAVISA) which had some small rocks on the road. In the second run, I did not hold back since I knew the terrain would have been swept clean by the cars. So, I was able to make over a minute on my own time. Tomorrow is another day, but I will try to hold position and push only
if I must. The main goal is to bring the car home in one piece.'
Two of the front-runners in the APRC, Jason Saldanha and Chetan Shivram had issues with their respective cars and lost time that saw them drop down the order. The other big disappointment
was the retirement of Hyundai i20 which is making its debut in the Indian motorsports scene with Hyderabad's Jeet Jhabakh packing up with a driveshaft problem but he is likely to rejoin the rally
on Sunday, if the car is fully repaired.
Meanwhile, the competition in the National championship was as razor sharp as ever with positions changing by the minute while Bengaluru-based Tarushi Vikram displayed impressive pace to lead
the Women INRC class.

India's test against Belgium, as both men & women team take on hosts
Antwerp, June 20 (UNI) India's outing in the ongoing FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 hasn't gone as per the script. Finishing in top 3 and vying for a World Cup berth was on their minds when they left India for the European leg. "Our focus will be on finishing well, ensuring tighter defence and creating chances to score," he added. Meanwhile, the women's team will take on the hosts in Antwerp hoping to turn the tide against world no.3 Belgium. Speaking about the upcoming game, Women's Captain Salima Tete expressed, "While we had two close matches against Australia and took Argentina to a penalty shootout in our last match, it was our 1-4 loss against Argentina in the previous match that gave us most insight into where we need to strengthen our game further and that is what we worked upon in our last match and take forward for our match against Belgium." "Last year, during our previous encounter against the Belgium Team, we didn't give them any easy wins, and we're now taking our learnings from those matches and our recent encounters against Australia and Argentina to go all out against them again and hopefully win," she said. The Indian Men's and Women's Team will take on Belgium in a double-header on June 21 and 22. Srihari and Dhinidhi among the participants in National aquatics championships
Top swimmers of the country, including Paris Olympians Srihari Natraj and Dhinidhi Desinghu, Sajan Prakash, Aryaan Mehra, Kushagra Rawat, Shoan Ganguly and Hashika Ramachandra, will be seen in action in the National aquatics championships starting at the Kalinga Stadium Aquatic Centre here on Sunday. While Dhinidhi will return to the Nationals after skipping the last edition, to prepare for the Olympics, Srihari will compete in only one event, 50m backstroke, as he will train for next month's World University Games (WUG) in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany. 'The timing of the Nationals does not suit me as I am looking at peaking for the World University Games in two weeks. Had I competed in all five days, I would have lost a minimum of 10 days of training for the WUG,' said Srihari, who recently set the best Indian time for 200m freestyle. Following a sensational performance of winning 11 medals, including nine gold, in the Uttarakhand National Games in January, Dhinidhi will be brimming with confidence. Sajan, who made a comeback in the National Games after a break, wants to clock a sub-two-minute time in his main event, 200m butterfly. The championship assumes importance as it will serve as the last qualifying event (before the cut-off date of June 29) for the World championships to be held in Singapore next month. Besides, it will serve as a screening event for the selection of swimmers for the National camp leading up to the Asian championships to be held in Ahmedabad from October 1 to 15.

Pant joins elite club of hattrick of tons
Leeds, June 21 (UNI) Rishabh Pant etched his name in the record books yet again as he struck a blistering century against England at Headingley, helping India script a historic moment — the fourth instance of three Indian batters scoring hundreds in the same Test innings outside Asia. Pant's unbeaten century, brought up in trademark style with a one-handed six off Shoaib Bashir, followed sublime hundreds by young openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Shubman Gill. The trio's centuries marked a rare and elite achievement for Indian Test cricket abroad. This is only the fourth instance of three Indian batsmen scoring centuries in a single Test innings outside Asia. The previous occasions were in 1986, when Sunil Gavaskar, Kris Srikkanth, and Mohinder Amarnath achieved the feat against Australia in Sydney; in 2002, when Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Sourav Ganguly did so against England at Headingley; and in 2006, when Virender Sehwag, Dravid, and Mohammad Kaif repeated the milestone against the West Indies at Gros Islet.
