Car claims female pedestrian's life on Mohali's Airport Road
A woman lost her life after being hit by a car while attempting to cross the road near Arjantha Hotel, TDI City, on Airport Road on Monday morning.
The car driver fled the scene after briefly stopping and seeing the victim lying in a pool of blood.
According to police, the accident took place around 8.45 am, when the victim, Babita, a resident of Adarsh Colony, was standing on the roadside with her husband and nephew, all labourers. They were heading to their worksite, when a rashly driven Alto car (PB12-F-1625) hit Babita.
According to the complaint filed by her husband, Raj, the impact was so severe that Babita sustained a critical head injury. A few passersby rushed to help and called an ambulance. She was taken to the civil hospital in Phase 6, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Raj told police that the driver briefly stopped the car, looked at Babita lying unconscious, and then fled the spot without offering any help.
Police have lodged an FIR under Sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash and negligent driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police are working to trace the absconding driver based on the vehicle registration number.

Dehradun: Police in Dehradun's Garhi Cantt registered a case against the head of a temple's caretaking committee after the 14-year-old son of a retired Army Colonel allegedly suffered an electric shock when he came in contact with metal stairs to which a live wire was attached. Police said the incident took place at Durga temple in Dakra market in Garhi Cantt on May 23, but came to light after a complaint was lodged on May 27, which was converted into an FIR on Thursday. Sub-inspector Mohan Negi of Cantonment police station, who is investigating the case, said a complaint was filed by col Nishith Thakur (retd) who went to visit the temple with his wife and two sons, aged 6 and 14. "He (Thakur) alleged that while entering the temple through metal stairs, his son suffered an electric shock as someone negligently attached a live wire to the stairs. His son collapsed on the ground after losing consciousness. He was rushed to hospital and admitted to the ICU. Col Thakur then lodged a complaint against the temple caretaking committee head, Tarsem Lal Rana," said Negi. The SI added that based on the complaint, a case was registered under BNS section 125 (b) (act endangering life) against Rana. "He was questioned on Thursday during which he denied his involvement in the act, saying it is the responsibility of visitors, too, to take care of the temple. A probe is on. No arrests have been made so far," said Negi.

Rural policing and surveillance initiative has been well received by public in Kanniyakumari
The Rural Policing and Surveillance initiative launched by Kanniyakumari District Superintendent of Police R. Stalin in April has gained widespread appreciation among the villagers. The initiative was introduced with the objective of reducing crime rates and improving public access to police services. As part of the initiative, two surveillance cameras have been installed at the entry point of the village or hamlet. Additionally, a police personnel from the station under whose jurisdiction, the village falls has been assigned as the in-charge of the village. These officers were directed to visit their assigned villages thrice a week and receive petitions from the public. A total of 764 constables have been assigned as in-charge officers for the villages and they will be supervised by sub inspectors, inspectors and Deputy Superintendent of Police of the jurisdiction. As of June 19, 1,164 villages have been selected for the programme and 415 villages have already been equipped with cameras, while remaining villages were assigned with police officers and camera installations are under way. Though the initiative was launched a couple of months ago, it has already received positive feedback from the public. Raj, from Theroor highlighted the improved accessibility between the public and the police. He mentioned that the initiative has made several processes easier including passport verification, clearance certificates and others. 'We often hear about crimes targeting elderly and women in rural areas across the State. But initiatives like this can help reduce such incidents,' he noted. Bhaskar, a resident of Pulluvilai, said that the initiative has instilled confidence among the public. He added, 'A few weeks ago a two wheeler went missing from our village. But we contacted our in-charge officer Rajkumar and the bike was recovered within a short span of time.' He emphasised that the initiative should continue to remain as effective as it is now. Speaking on the public response Mr. Stalin said, 'I was born and brought up in a rural area and I have experienced the lack of access between police and public in such regions.' He added that the initiative was introduced to bridge the gap between police personnel and villagers. To support this effort, car services have been provided for officers visiting remote tribal hamlets in Pechiparai, Arukani, Pathukani etc,. The SP further noted that in addition to surveillance cameras installed in shops and on roads, setting up cameras at the village entry points has significantly reduced crime rates. It has also made it easier for people to reach out their assigned police personnel directly on their mobile phones. This has also helped in preventing several crimes and facilitated timely tip-offs in cases related to ganja and other illegal activities, the SP said.

Delhi Police apologises for wrongly identifying journalist as suspect in criminal case
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police has apologised for wrongly identifying a Noida-based journalist as a suspect in a criminal case, an official said on Friday. A team from the Prem Nagar Police Station in outer Delhi, comprising a sub-inspector, a head constable and a constable, was investigating a case registered under sections 318(4) (cheating involving valuable security) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, he said. "The team was tracking the location of the accused identified as Rahul, a resident of Bahadurgarh, through his mobile phone," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said. It led the team to a petrol pump in Sector 38, Noida, where they found a man in a car with his wife, whose description matched the suspect, he added. "When the team asked him to produce an identity card, he reportedly refused and entered into an argument. The man later identified himself as Rahul Shah, a Noida-based journalist," the DCP said. Upon realising the mistake, the police team apologised and returned to the police station. "No misbehaviour or force was used during the incident," the officer said. The confusion was due to the similarity in facial features and the name, the DCP said, adding, "As soon as the team confirmed that the individual was not the accused, it expressed regret and disengaged from the interaction." An internal note has been made regarding the incident, and no further action is being pursued.
