Afghan dry fruit traders concerned over continued closure of Attari-Wagah border

Kabul, June 21 (UNI) The closure of the Attari–Wagah border crossing, one of Afghanistan's key trade routes to India, has raised serious concerns among dried fruit exporters of Afghanistan.
The Kabul Dry Fruit Exporters Union has warned that stopping freight truck movement on this route could severely disrupt both fresh and dried fruit exports, Tolo News reported.
The union has urged Pakistani and Indian authorities to reopen the route permanently for Afghan cargo trucks.
Khalid Rahmani, spokesperson for the union, told TOLOnews, 'We hope alternative links through Wagah and Chabahar ports will open soon. Given the current political and trade tensions between Pakistan and India, we predict a decline in exports to both countries.'
After the Indian and Pakistani military tensions eased, the border reopened briefly on May 9, allowing about 162 trucks to pass, but it was shut again.
At least 12 Afghan export trucks remain stuck at the crossing.
With the fruit harvest season approaching, traders warn that continued closure could pose major challenges for Afghan exports. They are calling for diplomatic engagement to reopen this critical trade route.
Omid Haidari, head of international relations at the Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock, said: 'We urge the leadership of the Islamic Emirate, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to strengthen contact with the Indian Foreign Ministry so that our major trade route can be reopened.'
Merchant Mahboobullah Mohammadi, said, 'Our biggest export is dried fruit, especially pine nuts, which we mostly send to India via Wagah. But the decline in exports this year has brought significant losses. Our air corridors are still shut, and large amounts of pine nuts remain unsold in local markets.'
The Wagah border was closed after tensions escalated between India and Pakistan following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India, on April 22. The closure of the land border check post continues to cast a shadow over Afghanistan's regional trade.

Madurai, June 21 (UNI) With the key assembly polls in the Tamil Nadu political horizon, the BJP, which is leading the NDA helmed by the main Opposition AIADMK, will hold a Lord Murugan devotees conference in the temple town of Madurai on Sunday, which has become now become the political hot spot for various political parties The much-anticipated Murugan Devotees' Conference, which faced some hurdles and protests and the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court giving its nod, is all set to take place at Amma Thidal, near Vandiyur Toll Plaza in Madurai, from where several political party leaders have launched their foray, with the ruling DMK recently holding its key General Council meeting after a gap of 48 years. Though Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is scheduled to inaugurate it has cancelled it, it would now be inaugurated by AP Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. Though the BJP has been maintaining that it was an event to spread the message of Lord Muruga and has installed replica of his six abodes with idols inside--that was visited by thousands of Muruga devotees over the last few days--party sources told UNI tonight that it was purely a devotional gathering and there was no politics in it. The conference will bring the curtains down on the about week long event. TN BJP chief and Legislature Party Leader Nainar Nagendran repeatedly stressed it that it was an occasion to highlight the message of Lord Muruga. The BJP had earlier organised Vel Yatra and also undertook padayatra to six his abodes, especially in the context of therow that emerged over Tiruparankundram hills--one of the abodes--to invoke his blessings, in what was seen as a bid to consolidate the Hindu votes in the state and defeat the ruling DMK. Organized by Hindu Munnani and supported by the BJP Tamil Nadu unit, the conference is expected to draw more than five lakh devotees from across Tamil Nadu, other parts of India, and countries like Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Singapore. Mr Nainar Nagendran, addressing the media ahead of the event, urged devotees from all walks of life and political affiliations to participate. 'Lord Murugan belongs to all. This is not a political event. It is a spiritual conference meant to strengthen our religious and cultural heritage,' he reiterated. He also emphasised that people should not bring political flags or banners, and that the focus will be entirely on faith, devotion, and Tamil culture. The highlight of the event is the devotional exhibits replicating the six Arupadai Veedu temples of Lord Murugan. Inaugurated a week ago, it drew thousands of people to have a darshan of the six avatars of the Lord giving an opportunity to those who could not visit these abodes. Continuous chanting of Kandha Sashti Kavacham (Lord Muruga devotional song) by about five lakh devotees and special poojas are planned on the occasion. Artists and orators from across the state will participate in cultural programs that would reflect the legacy of Murugan worship in Tamil tradition. The police have made elaborate security and announced traffic diversions in Madurai anticipating a huge footfall. According to BJP sources, this conference is part of a larger cultural revival initiative aimed at protecting and promoting Tamil Hindu traditions, especially the widespread devotion to Lord Murugan, who is considered the guardian deity of the Tamil people. The organizers and BJP leaders have also clarified that religious unity and devotion are the central themes of this event, not electoral gains or political narratives. The conference will conclude with a mass prayer for peace, prosperity, and unity across Tamil Nadu and the nation. The BJP said "with divine blessings, a grand Muruga Bhakth Sammelan (conference) will be held on the auspicious day during the sacred Sri Visuvavasu (Tamil calendar) year. "This spiritual gathering will take place in Madurai, the land that has nurtured and celebrated the richness of culture and devotion for centuries", the BJP said. Nepal thanks India for evacuating nationals from Iran

Kathmandu [Nepal], June 22 (ANI): Nepal's Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba on Saturday thanked External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for assisting in the evacuation of Nepali students from conflict-hit Iran, calling it a reflection of the strong Nepal-India ties. In a post on X, Deuba wrote, 'Thank you External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar for India's swift assistance in helping to evacuate Nepali nationals from Iran. India's support in Nepal's evacuation efforts is a reflection of strength of Nepal- India ties.' Earlier, the Sri Lankan Government also extended its heartfelt gratitude to the Government of India for its timely assistance in evacuating Sri Lankan nationals from Iran amidst the Islamic Republic's ongoing conflict with Israel. The gesture, part of India's Operation Sindhu, underscores the robust and enduring partnership between the two nations, as the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka stated in a post on X on Saturday. 'Sri Lanka extends its sincere gratitude to the Government of India for the timely assistance to evacuate Sri Lankan nationals from Iran alongside Indian citizens,' the post read. 'This act of solidarity exemplifies the strong and enduring partnership between Sri Lanka and India and is deeply appreciated by the people of Sri Lanka,' it added. Earlier on Saturday, the Indian Embassy in Iran said that it had made efforts to evacuate citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka and noted that the efforts were made at the request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka. 'On request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Indian Embassy's evacuation efforts in Iran will also cover Citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka,' the Indian Embassy in Iran posted on X. The Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka had also issued a notice to the Sri Lankan nationals in Iran for the evacuation. 'Notice to Sri Lankan Nationals in Iran. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism informs all Sri Lankans in the Islamic Republic of Iran that the Government of Sri Lanka has made arrangements with the Government of India to assist Sri Lankans who wish to leave Iran by accommodating them in their flights,' the notice said. Meanwhile, another special flight carrying 290 Indians stranded in conflict-hit Iran landed safely in New Delhi on Saturday night, bringing the total number of people evacuated under Operation Sindhu to 1,117. This marks the fifth batch of Indians evacuated from Iran as part of the ongoing operation. In a post on X, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, 'Operation Sindhu gains momentum. 290 Indian nationals have returned home safely from Iran on a special flight from Mashhad that landed in New Delhi at 2330 hrs on 21 June 2025.' 'With this, 1,117 Indian nationals have been evacuated from Iran,' the MEA added. The conflict between Israel and Iran entered its ninth day on Saturday. The conflict started after Israel, on June 13, launched a massive airstrike on Iranian military and nuclear sites, dubbed 'Operation Rising Lion'. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a large-scale drone and missile operation, 'Operation True Promise 3', targeting Israeli fighter jet fuel production facilities and energy supply centres. I study medicine at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The situation in Tehran is critical. Other places are normal. I am thankful to the government (for the evacuation).' Another evacuee, Naveed, a second-year MBBS student, added, 'I am from Kashmir. I am a 2nd-year MBBS student. I feel very good now. I am thankful to India. They evacuated us.'Describing the fear they faced, one evacuee said, 'I feel very good. There were missiles firing. We were feeling very afraid there. We were stuck there for 1 week.' Momin Ushtaq from Kashmir praised the government's efforts, saying, 'I am from Kashmir. The situation is not good there. We are very thankful to the government of India, Kashmir, and the Embassy. They deserve a special thanks, as they evacuated us and brought us back home.' Gratitude was also directed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Parveen, another evacuee, said, 'I am very happy. I am thankful to PM Modi from the bottom of my heart. Our government helped us to get back here.' Indira Kumari added, 'We have returned. I am thankful to the Indian government and the Prime Minister of India.' Earlier on Saturday, a special flight from Mashhad carrying 310 Indian nationals landed in New Delhi at 4:30 PM. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes targeted a significant nuclear facility in Iran's Isfahan province, as reported by Al Jazeera. As per Al Jazeera, citing an Israeli military spokesperson, the air force struck the main complex as well as buildings involved in centrifuge production. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that a centrifuge manufacturing workshop was hit but clarified that no nuclear material was present at the site, so there were no radiological impacts.
