Sevilla appoint Matias Almeyda as eighth head coach in three years
Sevilla have appointed Matias Almeyda as their new head coach.
The 51-year-old Argentine, who played for Sevilla in the 1996-97 season, is the eighth Sevilla head coach since the start of 2022-23 and is the permanent successor to Javier Garcia Pimienta, who was dismissed in April.
Almeyda has signed a three-year deal at Sevilla, who finished the 2024-25 La Liga season in 17th, just one point and one place above the relegation zone. Their 12th-place finish the campaign prior had been their lowest since relegation in 2000.

FC Barcelona Star's Registration Deleted By La Liga
La Liga had to delete the registration of new FC Barcelona star Joan Garcia after mistakenly ... More including him in the Catalans' first team squad on Friday afternoon, a few hours after the goalkeeper signed his contract at the Joan Gamper CT. La Liga had to delete the registration of new FC Barcelona star Joan Garcia after mistakenly including him in the Catalans' first team squad on Friday afternoon, a few hours after the goalkeeper signed his contract at the Joan Gamper CT. Garcia became Barca's first port of call in the summer transfer window thanks to his breakout 2024/2025 season. It was a campaign in which the Blaugrana became treble champions of Spain, yet ended up seeking a new shotstopper thanks to leaking seven goals in the Champions League semifinals to Inter Milan which denied it the chance to get to the decider for the first time since 2015. It was important to pounce on the opportunity to sign Garcia while his release clause was still at a reasonable €25 million, and that value would have only risen in the near future had he made his expected Spain debut under Luis de la Fuente. Garcia's representatives deposited the required funds on Friday last week, ahead of the 24-year-old's signing being officially announced by Barca and him then penning a six-year contract at the Joan Gamper CT. "I'm very happy, I really wanted this day to come and it has finally arrived," Garcia said. 'My goal is to continue growing as a goalkeeper and win a lot, achieve very nice things with the team, that's why I have come.' 'It is a very exciting project, with a great team and very young players, whom I already know. I really want to start and be with them,' he added. Yet eagle-eyed outlets such as Mundo Deportivo spotted that Garcia was immediately uploaded to Hansi Flick's squad in error. The mistake was quickly rectified and Garcia only appeared there for a few minutes, but he was then swiftly deleted. While some clubs such as Real Madrid can have new signings like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen uploaded to its squad on the La Liga website and registered immediately, it's not as straightforward at Barca where for the past few summers President Joan Laporta and Deco have had to do economic gymnastics to get new signings cleared to lace their boots up while the club stays on the right side of Financial Fair Play (FFP). FC Barcelona will continue trying to make new signings Despite this predicament, FC Barcelona will continue trying to make new signings and has reportedly agreed terms with Nico Williams. It now remains to be see how and when Laporta and Co can raise the Euro 2024's $66.8 million (€58 million) release clause.

River Plate's Marcelo Gallardo says he made Cristiano Ronaldo Club World Cup offer
River Plate head coach Marcelo Gallardo says he made informal contact with Cristiano Ronaldo over representing the Argentine side at the 2025 Club World Cup. Ronaldo, 40, confirmed earlier in June he would not be at the tournament despite receiving multiple offers. Gallardo, 49, previously coached Ronaldo when he took charge of a Riyadh All-Stars team for a friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in 2023. He explained the five-time Ballon d'Or winner considered his proposal to play for River Plate at this summer's tournament but turned it down to focus on next season. Advertisement 'In mid-March, informally, through a mutual friend, I told him, 'Hey, I have a Club World Cup coming up, for a player like you, who defined an era… don't you have any intention of playing in it?'' Gallardo told ESPN. 'Not only did he feel recognised, but he evaluated it, thought about it, but then responded, 'I have to prepare for next season'.' Ronaldo's Al Nassr did not qualify for the Club World Cup, but FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in an interview in May there had been 'discussions' and the Portugal international 'might play' for a team at the tournament. Ronaldo, however, later confirmed he would likely not be there. 'There have been a lot of conversations, but there are certain things that I see as making sense and not making sense,' he said at a news conference ahead of Portugal's Nations League final against Spain,. 'You can't go to everything, you have to think short, medium and long term. I've pretty much made up my mind not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had plenty of offers.' Ronaldo did talk about the potential of one day play Al Hilal CEO Esteve Calzada also said this month it would have been 'completely counter intuitive' for his club to sign Ronaldo on loan from Riyadh rivals Al Nassr for the Club World Cup. River Plate beat Urawa Reds in their Club World Cup opener, and play Monterrey and Inter in their remaining group stage fixtures.

Barcelona transfer target makes fresh contact with the club over summer move
Manchester United star Marcus Rashford this week initiated contact with the board at La Liga champions Barcelona once more. That's according to Tot Costa of Catalunya Radio, who have on Friday provided an insight into the Englishman's ongoing attempts to engineer a Camp Nou switch. Advertisement Rashford, it is understood, remains nothing short of desperate to take his talents to Barcelona with a view to next season. Despite the Blaugrana focusing their efforts firmly on the signature of Athletic Club standout Nico Williams, the out-of-favour Man United man is of the opinion that he too could benefit the cause in Hansi Flick's squad. Rashford, through his entourage, therefore made fresh contact with Deco and co. over recent days. This came to reiterate both his eagerness to join forces, and willingness to remain patient over the weeks and months ahead. Barcelona, for their part, are open to a deal for Rashford under the right conditions, viewing the 27-year-old as a potential market opportunity. Conor Laird – GSFN
