River Plate's Marcelo Gallardo says he made Cristiano Ronaldo Club World Cup offer

New York Times17 hours ago

River Plate head coach Marcelo Gallardo says he made informal contact with Cristiano Ronaldo over representing the Argentine side at the 2025 Club World Cup.
Ronaldo, 40, confirmed earlier in June he would not be at the tournament despite receiving multiple offers.
Gallardo, 49, previously coached Ronaldo when he took charge of a Riyadh All-Stars team for a friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in 2023. He explained the five-time Ballon d'Or winner considered his proposal to play for River Plate at this summer's tournament but turned it down to focus on next season.

'In mid-March, informally, through a mutual friend, I told him, 'Hey, I have a Club World Cup coming up, for a player like you, who defined an era… don't you have any intention of playing in it?'' Gallardo told ESPN.
'Not only did he feel recognised, but he evaluated it, thought about it, but then responded, 'I have to prepare for next season'.'
Ronaldo's Al Nassr did not qualify for the Club World Cup, but FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in an interview in May there had been 'discussions' and the Portugal international 'might play' for a team at the tournament. Ronaldo, however, later confirmed he would likely not be there.
'There have been a lot of conversations, but there are certain things that I see as making sense and not making sense,' he said at a news conference ahead of Portugal's Nations League final against Spain,.
'You can't go to everything, you have to think short, medium and long term. I've pretty much made up my mind not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had plenty of offers.'
Ronaldo did talk about the potential of one day play
Al Hilal CEO Esteve Calzada also said this month it would have been 'completely counter intuitive' for his club to sign Ronaldo on loan from Riyadh rivals Al Nassr for the Club World Cup.
River Plate beat Urawa Reds in their Club World Cup opener, and play Monterrey and Inter in their remaining group stage fixtures.

Inter Milan Striker Praises Brother: ‘He's A Beast' – Adds ‘There's No Competition Between Us'

Inter Milan striker Sebastiano Esposito says his brother Francesco Pio is a 'beast' but says there is 'no competition' between them. The 22-year-old spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, ahead of today's Club World Cup match against Urawa Red Diamonds. Advertisement Sebastiano spent last season on loan at Empoli. Meanwhile, Francesco Pio was at Spezia last campaign. However, the two loan deals end. Therefore, the pair of brothers are now at Inter playing together for the senior team for the first time ever. This is just for the Club World Cup. There is a sense that neither of the two brothers will be wearing the Inter shirt come the start of next season. Nevertheless, both Sebastiano and Francesco Pio will have their role to play for Inter over the next few weeks. Advertisement 'I already played with [his other brother] Salvatore for six months at SPAL,' he noted. 'And so doing the same now with Pio is great.' Meanwhile, Sebastiano said that his younger brother 'has grown a lot.' 'He's become a beast on a physical level,' said the 22-year-old striker. 'We're in the dressing room together. We always talk, and starting with the next match he should be available because he's recovered from his injury.' Then, Sebastiano joked that 'let's hope he can do the opposite of what I did against Monterrey – score a goal!' And as far as the relationship between the brothers, Sebastiano insisted that 'there's no competition between us.'

Ex Bayern Munich Star Declares Inter Milan 'Must Win' Vs Urawa Red Diamonds – Adds 'Chivu Has A Strong Communication Style, I Like Him' Yann Sommer feels that Inter Milan 'must win' in their Club World Cup group stage match against Urawa Red Diamonds today. The 36-year-old spoke to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInterNews. He also gave his thoughts on newly-arrived Nerazzurri coach Cristian Chivu. Advertisement Inter Milan take on Urawa Red Diamonds in the Club World Cup this evening. The Japanese team will be their second opponent of the group stage. The Nerazzurri drew 1-1 with Mexican side Monterrey in their first match of the group stage. Therefore, it is clearly important to record a win against Urawa Reds. Inter's final match of the group stage, meanwhile, comes against Argentine giants River Plate. That match next week could be a real marquee clash, and decisive for reaching the knockouts. Inter Milan certainly won't want to bomb out of the tournament at the group stage. The knockout rounds will be lucrative on a financial level. And furthermore, an important opportunity to send a message and bounce back after the Champions League final. 'With a lot of energy, as we've always tried to do this season.' Sommer called Urawa Reds 'a team with a lot of running.' 'They're also technically very high quality.' 'We aren't very familiar with them' Sommer admitted. 'But we're preparing well.' Sommer noted that Urawa Red Diamonds are 'dangerous.' 'But we have to play a great match. Both in terms of technique and energy.' Advertisement 'Hopefully everything goes well,' Sommer added. Meanwhile, the Inter goalkeeper stated that new coach Cristian Chivu 'has a very strong style of communication with the players.' And that is the case 'even on the pitch.'
