Yunus acted without consulting parties: Ex-Indian envoy on Bangladesh polls

Former High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Veena Sikri said that the announcement of elections in the first half of April, next year by Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh is "controversial" and said the decision was taken without consulting the parties.
Sikri told ANI a day earlier, "I think this announcement is controversial due to some reasons -- some political parties have opposed it, even BMP themselves wanted it earlier by December. He has taken this decision without consulting the parties. He has talked about reforms, but he is not a constitutional government, so there is no reason for such a government to do reforms"
The former envoy said the neighbouring country must have early elections and that the Bangladesh Army has yet to react to the announcement.
"They must have early elections, and then the elected government will look at what reforms they want. The Army has not said anything so far about the decision. The most important thing is how the elections will be conducted, as he cannot head the caretaker govt because in his govt there are political party representatives, including representatives of Islami Andolan Bangladesh."
On June 6, the Bangladesh interim government announced that the national election would be held in the first half of April 2026.
"I am announcing to the countrymen today that the next national elections will be held sometime in the first half of April 2026. Based on this announcement, the Election Commission will provide you with a detailed roadmap for the elections in due course", said Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh, in an address to the nation through state television, BTV, on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha.
The announcement of the national election is a major development for Bangladesh politics after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in August 2024.

MoS Shri Pabitra Margherita received 285 Indian nationals evacuated on a special flight from Mashhad that landed in New Delhi at 2330 hrs on 22 June.' "With this, 1,713 Indian nationals have now been brought home from Iran," the MEA added. Meanwhile, MoS Margherita, in a post on X, expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing operation, stating, "Warmly welcomed 285 Indian nationals at the Delhi airport who were evacuated from Iran under Operation Sindhu. With this, 1,713 Indian nationals have been brought home safely from Iran.' The evacuated Indians thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian Embassy for the safe return and recalled the grim situation in Iran. Suja Ali told ANI that the embassy brought them to a safe zone. Ali said he went to Iran on June 11, and the attacks started on June 12, while he was in Qom. The embassy later brought them to a safe zone 1,200 km away. 'When the attack happened this morning, we were at the airport and we thought that Iran might close its airspace. But it is PM Modi's diplomacy and the Indian government's arrangement that we reached here safely," he added. Another evacuee, G Alama Jaan, said, "The situation was worsening there. The Indian embassy brought us here. Now we will go from Delhi to Srinagar by bus. I am grateful to the government for bringing us here safely," reported the news agency.

That nation (Israel) has shut down schools and taken hospitals underground. Israel is standing firm, saying, 'If our way of life is disturbed, we will fight.' On April 22, in Jammu and Kashmir, 26 people were shot dead simply because they followed the Hindu religion. We launched an attack in retaliation. But for some people, even this has become a problem,' the former BJP president said. He said that the primary purpose of this conference is to inspire every Hindu to rise and follow the way of life practised by our ancestors, while adding that Hinduism is the majority religion in only two countries. 'Through the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, 44,000 temples in Tamil Nadu are being managed. Not only that, there are 340 temples that are over a thousand years old. Udhampur (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 23 (ANI): Rainfall in Udhampur's Chanthal village revived the hope for the growth of paddy crop in the farmers. Local farmer Ganesh Sharma expressed his joy and said the rain would benefit them. 'The rain is fine, and now we are planting paddy. We grow a lot of paddy and vegetables, and the rain that we have received has also benefited us... We used the canal water as well as the rainwater,' the farmer told ANI. Meanwhile, locals of Sangyal village in Udhampur district have been using horses to fetch water from faraway places due to water scarcity in the village. Officials said that work on a water supply scheme is delayed due to a lack of funds and local disputes, but efforts are being made to solve the issues and finish the project. Speaking to ANI, the Executive Engineer of the Udhampur division said, 'We had a scheme, the Darsoo Gudhar Water Supply Scheme, which was incomplete. The work is going on, but a few contractors have stopped working due to a lack of funds. The concerned area has two sources of work is still lingering due to several disputes there. We are sorting out the connection pipe is there, as soon as we sort out the contractors start working, we will complete the work...' Meanwhile, on Monday, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha asserted that any terrorist attack in the state will now be treated as an act of war,' which is a tougher approach towards cross-border terrorism.
