NC demands restoration of J-K's
Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 21 (ANI): The Jammu & Kashmir National Conference on Wednesday reaffirmed its 'unwavering commitment to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's special status' and condemned the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people, including a young resident.
The party's Working Committee met under the chairmanship of party president Farooq Abdullah at the party headquarters and unanimously adopted seven resolutions addressing political, security, and civil rights issues.
'The Working Committee unanimously reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's special status. The Committee reiterated that this is central to the aspirations and dignity of the people and must be addressed without further delay and we will continue to fight for its restoration,' the the resolution on the J-K's special status issue reads.
In August 2019, the Central Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, repealed Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, effectively ending the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcating the state into two Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Condemning the terror attack in Pahalgam and continued cross-border shelling, the first resolution expressed deep sorrow over the loss of civilian lives and paid tribute to deceased party workers and activists.
'The Working Committee strongly condemned the horrific Baisaran attack that claimed the lives of 26 innocent individuals, including a young Kashmiri, Syed Adil Hussain Shah. It also denounced the continued cross-border shelling that took the lives of 23 innocent civilians The Committee expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the bereaved families. It also paid heartfelt tributes to the Working Committee members and party activists who have passed away since the last meeting, acknowledging their invaluable contributions and unwavering dedication.'
The Working Committee also demanded immediate restoration of statehood, referencing assurances made in Parliament, 'The Working Committee also urged the Government of India to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir immediately, as promised on the floor of Parliament and repeatedly echoed in the public domain and also as committed by the constitution bench of the Supreme Court.'
The Committee also welcomed the announcement of a 'ceasefire' and called upon both the countries to 'uphold peace and explore long-lasting, peaceful solutions to end violence.'
The resolution mention that the party also reiterated its commitment to its manifesto, vowing to 'uphold justice, peace, and people's rights through democratic means.'
Acknowledging public solidarity, the committee praised the people of Jammu and Kashmir for showing compassion to stranded tourists and unequivocally rejecting violence.
It warned the government against actions that could deepen alienation, such as 'arbitrary arrests, harassment of youth, targeted use of bulldozers, and intimidation of media.'
It further cautioned that 'arbitrary arrests, harassment of youth, targeted use of bulldozers, and intimidation of legitimate media voices will only alienate the very people who have stood firmly for peace and against violence.'
In its final resolution, the NC condemned the harassment of Kashmiris across India, particularly students and traders, calling on state governments to protect their rights and ensure their safety.
'The Working Committee expressed serious concern over the reports of harassment faced by students, traders, and residents from Jammu and Kashmir in various parts of the country. It strongly condemned their selective targeting in the aftermath of recent events. The Committee called upon all state governments to ensure the safety, dignity, and protection of the lives and property of all people from Jammu and Kashmir living or working in other parts of India,' the resolution read. India Will Not Run Short Of Fuels Due To Middle East Tensions: Hardeep Puri
New Delhi: Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Sunday allayed fears over any disruption in oil supplies to Indian consumers due to the Israel-Iran war and further escalation in geopolitical tensions in the Middle East because of the US bombing of Iran's nuclear sites. "We have been closely monitoring the evolving geopolitical situation in the Middle East since the past two weeks. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have diversified our supplies in the past few years, and a large volume of our supplies does not come through the Strait of Hormuz now," the minister said. He pointed out that the country's oil marketing companies (Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum) have supplies for several weeks and continue to receive energy supplies from several routes. "We will take all necessary steps to ensure the stability of supplies of fuel to our citizens," the minister assured. Iran is situated on the northern side of the Strait of Hormuz/Persian Gulf, through which 20 million barrels of oil per day flow from major exporting countries such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Iran had threatened to block this route if the US intervened in the conflict with Israel. A wider Middle East conflict is expected to have an impact on oil supplies from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait and the UAE, which would lead to a sharp spike in oil prices. Shipping could also get hit as Yemen's Houthi rebels have already warned that they would resume their attacks on ships if the US attacked Iran. India imports around 85 per cent of its crude oil requirement, and a surge in oil prices leads to an increase in its oil import bill and pushes up the rate of inflation, which hurts economic growth. The larger outgo of foreign exchange also leads to a weakening of the rupee vis-a-vis the US dollar. However, India has diversified its oil sources by increasing imports from Russia as well as the US and building resilience through strategic reserves. Highlighting the infrastructure milestones in the oil and gas sector, Puri had earlier said that the country now has 23 modern operational refineries with a total capacity of 257 million metric tonnes per annum to produce petroleum products. The minister also highlighted the ministry's initiative in setting up storage facilities for strategic petroleum reserves, on which the country can fall back in times of emergency and which assume importance during times of geopolitical uncertainty. These reserves can also be dipped into at times when global prices skyrocket to provide a cushion to the national oil companies. The minister mentioned that the storage capacity at Pudur is 2.25 million metric tonnes (MMT), the Visakhapatnam facility has the capacity to store 1.33 MMT of crude oil, while Mangalore has a storage capacity of 1.5 MMT. Besides, another strategic reserve facility is being built at Chandikhol, which is also on the coast.

Israel-Iran Conflict: India has debunked the claims that its airspace was utilised during the US' Operation 'Midnight Hammer', which targeted key Iranian nuclear facilities, sparking heightened tensions between Israel and Iran. Amid escalating regional conflict, India has maintained its territorial integrity, refuting any claims of involvement or facilitation in the operation. As tension simmers across West Asia, on June 22, the Government of India stepped in and doused the misinformation. Viral posts on social media claimed that US bombers used Indian airspace to reach Iranian targets. The claim quickly snowballed, dragging India into the storm. But within hours, the country's official fact-checking wing, the Press Information Bureau (PIB), issued a denial. In a post on the social media platform X, PIB Fact Check informed that Indian Airspace was not used by the US during the Operation to strike Iran's nuclear sites. The clarification did not only aim to clear confusion. It was also a signal that India does not want to be perceived as playing any role, direct or indirect, in the spiraling conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel. In the wee hours on June 22, American stealth bombers targeted three nuclear installations deep inside Iran. That attack was quickly dubbed 'Operation Midnight Hammer' and has sharply raised the temperature in an already volatile region. With global air routes under scrutiny and military flight paths being tracked by amateur sleuths, speculation began to swirl. Some claimed that the most logical route for US aircraft involved passing over Indian skies. But aviation experts pointed out early on that long-range bombers like the B-2 Spirit have enough fuel and support infrastructure to operate from bases like Diego Garcia or American carriers in the Arabian Sea, without needing Indian airspace at all. Israel-Iran Conflict The conflict between Israel and Iran began when Jerusalem launched 'Operation Rising Lion' on June 13, striking Iranian military and nuclear sites. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister expressed India's deep concern at the recent escalations and conveyed that New Delhi is on the side of 'peace and humanity.' PM Modi emphasised the need for immediate de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy as the way forward. The Politics Of Perception In the age of satellite trackers, open-source intel, and viral disinformation, perception can become reality within minutes. A misleading tweet or doctored flight map can be enough to cause ripples on the world stage. India's public denial is, therefore, more than a bureaucratic formality. It is a firm effort to stay out of the war narrative building around Israel, the United States, and Iran. And it reflects how quickly digital misinformation can threaten to redraw geopolitical lines. As the Middle East inches toward deeper instability, India intends to stay out of the line of fire.

US, on early Sunday, carried out 'massive precision' strikes on Iran's three nuclear sites -Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow- and warned of further retaliation if peace is not achieved. Rafael Grossi, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said that an emergency meeting would take place on Monday in light of the developments taking place in West Asia. The IAEA confirmed that there has been no reported increase in off-site radiation levels following the recent strikes on three key nuclear sites in Iran, including the underground enrichment facility at Fordow. 'Following attacks on three nuclear sites in Iran -- including Fordow -- the IAEA can confirm that no increase in off-site radiation levels has been reported as of this time. IAEA will provide further assessments on the situation in Iran as more information becomes available,' the agency said in a statement. Iran condemned the attacks, calling them a violation of international law and vowed to continue its nuclear program. A statement issued by Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) confirmed that early on Sunday morning, Iran's nuclear sites were 'subjected to savage aggression--an act in violation of international laws, particularly the NPT.' 'This action, which violates international regulations, unfortunately took place under the indifference--and even complicity--of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),' it said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the US military action under the leadership of Trump, stating that Trump's bold decision to target Iranian nuclear facilities will change history. Meanwhile, India continues its evacuation efforts for Indian nationals in Iran, with multiple flights planned to bring back Indians from the conflict-hit region. (ANI)
