‘Smash' abruptly announces final show after Tony Awards drama in Broadway shocker

New York Post11-06-2025

Behind every musical is a hot mess.
'Smash,' the Broadway play that opened at the Imperial Theatre on April 10, has abruptly announced its final show date after struggling at the box office and suffering a 2025 Tony Awards shutout.
Executive producers Steven Spielberg, Robert Greenblatt and Neil Meron made the closing announcement on Tuesday. Playbill confirmed that the comedy's final show date will be June 22 after a total of 32 previews and just 84 regular performances.

Inspired by the canceled NBC series of the same name, 'Smash' is a musical about the making of a musical.
Directed by Susan Stroman and featuring music by Marc Shaiman, it follows a group of theater artists as they try to create a Broadway production about Marilyn Monroe called 'Bombshell.'
But the box office numbers were not in the play's favor, and the New York Times reported that the meta musical's weekly grosses were down from $1 million at its peak to $656K the week ending June 8.

The outlet also reported that $20 million was invested to bringing 'Smash' in Broadway to life, and so far, that money has not been recouped.
This marks the first Broadway production to shutter after leaving empty-handed at the 2025 Tony Awards on Sunday.
Although 'Smash' was nominated for Best Choreography and Best Featured Actor, it didn't win either.

Spielberg, Greenblatt, and Meron's decision to close the musical after less than three months of regular performances comes after some behind-the-scenes drama unfolded at the Tonys.
Both 'Smash' and 'Boop! The Betty Boop Musical' were left fuming because the award show's producers refused to let either play perform during the three-hour broadcast on CBS Sunday night.
'It's bizarre,' one Broadway producer said, although neither 'Smash' nor 'Boop!' was nominated for Best Musical this year.

The Post exclusively confirmed that both productions were willing to pay the $300K that a Tony Awards appearance costs but were still rejected by the award show's producers.
Spielberg, Greenblatt and Meron first announced that 'Smash' was heading to Broadway in 2020, seven years after the NBC series ended in 2013 after just two seasons.
The trio also served as producers of the original show.

''Smash' is near and dear to my heart, and it was always my hope that a musical inspired by the show would eventually come to the stage,' Spielberg, 78, said in 2023.
'We think we've come up with something the die-hard series fans will love but that will also be exciting for people who never saw an episode of the show,' Meron, 69, added.
'And above all else,' he continued, 'it will be a valentine to the Broadway musical and the exhilarating rollercoaster ride of bringing one to life.'

Anthony Ramos calls out Madonna for being on iPad 'the whole time' during one of his 'Hamilton' performances

Anthony Ramos did not throw away his shot. The 33-year-old former Hamilton star recently recalled Madonna giving him quite the fright when he spotted her in the audience during one of his performances of the acclaimed show on stage. "The most terrifying was Madonna with her iPad in her face," Ramos said during his Thursday appearance on Watch What Happens Live while host Andy Cohen peppered him with a string of "scary questions." "She was like this the whole time," Ramos continued, mimicking someone staring down at an iPad. "I'm like, 'Damn, shorty, if you're not enjoying it that much, the door's right there. You ain't gotta stay here.'" Ramos was part of the original cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning Broadway musical, playing the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton from July 2015 until November 2016. After leaving Hamilton, Ramos took on the lead role in the film adaptation of In the Heights, Miranda's breakout 2008 Broadway hit, which also earned widespread critical praise. Ramos continued building his career, nabbing a starring turn in 2023's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, 2024's Twisters, and several other TV and movie projects. The original Broadway cast of Hamilton reunited on June 8 during the 78th Annual Tony Awards to celebrate the musical's 10th anniversary. Since its Broadway debut in 2015, the show, inspired by the life of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, has become a cultural phenomenon, shattering box office records and earning a record-breaking 16 Tony nominations and winning 11 trophies, including Best Musical. Ramos did not say when Madonna attended the Hamilton performance. However, in 2015, Playbill reported that creator and star Miranda banned Madonna from visiting the cast backstage after an April 18 performance of the show when it was still Off Broadway due to her poor theater etiquette. In a now-deleted tweet, the Pulitzer Prize–winning lyricist wrote, "Tonight was the first time I asked stage management NOT to allow a celebrity (who was texting all through Act 2) backstage. #noselfieforyou." The Playbill story also reported that Madonna had arrived late to that night's performance and that she was seen using a phone throughout the show. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

Steven Spielberg says he thought Jaws would be the ‘last movie I would ever be given to direct'

Steven Spielberg may be one of the most recognisable directors today, but he thought his career was over 50 years ago. At 78 years old, Spielberg has made iconic films such as Schindler's List (1993), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and The Post (2017). Among other prizes, he has won three Academy Awards, including two accolades for Best Director for Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Schindler's List as well as the Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award in 1987. In a new interview, as per The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker reflected on one of his earliest hits, Jaws, telling audiences that he thought it 'would be the last movie I would ever be given to direct'. Released in 1975, the shark thriller became a classic, but the disaster-plagued production left a mark on its maker. 'In most circumstances, summer in the Vineyard is a dream,' he said in reference to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts where Jaws was filmed. 'But when you are over budget and over schedule and when I am over my head, that summer of 1974 was a bad dream before it ever became the dream of a lifetime.' Spielberg made the comments as part of a video message to an audience in Martha's Vineyard attending a National Geographic world premiere for Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story on Friday (20 June). He had been a 27-year-old director at the time and chose to shoot in Martha's Vineyard because he wanted his mechanised shark to swim in real waters. Speaking about Jaws @ 50, he continued: 'It details how young and unprepared all of us were for the challenges of shooting in the Atlantic Ocean with a mechanical shark that was more temperamental than any movie star I have ever worked with since, and how in the wake of running over schedule and budget, I truly believed that Jaws would be the last movie I would ever be given to direct.' The film budget ultimately tripled to $9m, with the schedule stretching from the originally planned 55 days to 159. Jaws proved so troublesome to produce that Spielberg said he had a 'full-blown panic attack' after the film wrapped. 'I couldn't breathe, I thought I was having a heart attack. I couldn't get a full breath of air,' he said. 'I kept going to the bathroom and splashing water on my face. I was shaking. I was out of it – completely out of it' Spielberg said it was thanks to cinema-goers that he was able to work again, recalling how theatrical audiences threw him a 'life preserver' in 1975. 'Fifty years after its initial release, making Jaws remains a seminal experience for every single one of us, and five decades has done nothing to dim the memories of what remains one of the most overwhelming, exciting, terrifying and rewarding experiences of my entire career,' the director concluded. Jaws went on to earn over $475m at the box office, becoming the first true summer blockbuster. It won three Academy Awards and has gone down in cinema history, but the experience left Spielberg with 'consistent nightmares' for years. Directed by Laurent Bouzereau, Jaws @ 50 will air on National Geographic on 10 July before it is later released on streaming services Disney+ and Hulu.

Tom Sandoval surprises during 'America's Got Talent' audition

Two years after "Scandoval," former "Vanderpump Rules" star Tom Sandoval is taking on "America's Got Talent." The ex-Bravolebrity — who became a "Pump Rules" pariah after an explosive cheating scandal — is slated to audition for "AGT" with his band the Most Extras on the upcoming June 24 episode. "My name is Tom Sandoval, I was the most hated man in America," Sandoval quips in an "AGT" teaser posted on the show's official Instagram account. "This is the chance to show who I am as a musician." In a separate clip, Sandoval and his band perform the '80s hit song "Take on Me" by A-ha on the NBC reality TV variety series. During the audition, judges Mel B, Simon Cowell and Sofía Vergara and Mel B looked uneasy about Sandoval's "AGT" attempt. When does 'America's Got Talent' 2025 start? What to know about the premiere, judges Later, though, Cowell smiles as Sandoval dramatically dances on stage and surprises the audience with his vocal ability. Last month, the landmark 20th season of "America's Got Talent" kicked off, offering amateur and often unknown acts the chance to win a $1 million prize and performance in Las Vegas. Mel B returned as a judge alongside comedian Howie Mandel, Cowell and Vergara. The "Scary Spice" Girl replaces former judge and supermodel Heidi Klum, who joined the group in 2013 and judged on Seasons 8-13. Actor Terry Crews reprised his host main hosting role on the show. Tom Sandoval is one of the biggest reality TV villains in history Sandoval's role in the aptly coined "Scandoval" cemented him as one of the most infamous reality TV stars in history. In early March 2023, tabloid reports began circulating that Sandoval cheated on his longtime girlfriend Ariana Madix with their co-star Raquel Leviss, who is now known by her legal name Rachel Leviss. The controversy catapulted Madix, now split from Sandoval, into superstardom with stints as Roxie Hart on "Chicago" on Broadway and as a finalist on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars." Last year, reality hit Sandoval and his former castmates when Bravo announced that "Pump Rules" would return with a brand-new cast following the hit show's 11th season and Madix's individual success as host of "Love Island USA."
