
Red Arrows make history with sustainable fuel flypast for King's birthday
Jets from the world-famous aerobatic display team were powered by a blend of sustainable aviation fuel, and used the vegetable oil to produce their trademark vapour trails.
It follows groundbreaking trials by RAF engineers and logisticians.
All nine of the team's British-built Hawk fast-jets were topped up with a high-ratio blend of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at the team's home base of RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire, before they set off, in what is thought to be a world's first.
The flypast is also thought to be the first time a renewable biofuel – known as hydrotreated vegetable oil – has been used to produce vapour trails.
Charles has been championing sustainability and climate action since before he ascended the throne.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the King was not involved in the decision but was 'delighted' because he has been encouraging use of the fuel on royal flights where practical and hopes the example will lead to wider use across the aviation sector.
Squadron leader Andy King, the Red Arrows' senior engineering officer who led the project, said: 'Ever since the Red Arrows' first display in 1965, the team has aimed to inspire future generations and represent the best of British. Using this technology is the latest example of our relentless pursuit of excellence.
'The flypast for His Majesty The King is the perfect opportunity to showcase this innovation.
'The vibrant vapour trails that we generate is what sets the Red Arrows apart and so to be the first aerobatic team in the world to move to a fully sustainable option is really exciting.'
Minister for the Armed Forces, Luke Pollard, said: 'The iconic Red Arrows are one of the world's premier aerobatic display teams and by adopting a more environmentally friendly sustainable aviation fuel, the Royal Air Force is blazing a trail as part of our work to combat climate change.'
The Red Arrows' 2025 season runs until October, with 60 shows planned across the UK and mainland Europe.

Experts over at Lonely Planet, who advise hiring a car through your accommodation provider, say having your own vehicle can give you 'full freedom' to explore the island - but warns there are certain 'drawbacks'. "The relatively short drives along the island's diminutive road network can be harrowing due to narrow lanes, cliffside plunges and incessant peak season traffic," they explained. "Parking is also stressful in Fira and at the beaches. Expect hefty fines if you decide to leave your car in an unapproved spot. A good strategy is to rent a car for just a day or two of exploration, thus saving yourself from the attendant hassles at other times." Parking in clearly-designated spaces - that may incur a small fee - is your best practice. You can always ask your hotel for recommended parking spots, or check Google reviews if you're unsure. According to reports, parking violations come with a fine of up to €80 (approximately £68.39), so it's never really worth the risk. "I have hired a car in Santorini and this evening got a parking ticket and my number plates taken away," one tourist wrote on Facebook back in 2023. "I know I have to pay a fine at [the] post office in Thera but how do I get the number plates back?" If anything like this happens to you whilst away, contact the company you rented your car from. It is still your responsibility to pay the fine, but staff may be able to help explain the process - and get your number plates back. Cycling is another popular way of navigating Santorini, which is a great way to avoid any steep fines. However, prepare for your thighs to burn as the island is filled with harsh inclines and twisty roads. "Add in drivers maniacally speeding to make up for time spent stalled in traffic and the challenges multiply," Lonely Planet added. "Still, you can easily rent a bike on the island from multiple sources. Starmer puts skills training at heart of industrial strategy plan
Sir Keir Starmer will set out his industrial strategy on Monday as he seeks to kickstart the stuttering economy and reduce the UK's reliance on foreign workers. The decade-long plan for 'national renewal' will include £275 million in skills investment to train Britons to do jobs in growth industries which might otherwise require imported labour. The strategy will include specific funding to train people for work in defence, engineering, digital and construction roles. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the strategy 'will help transform our skills system to end the overreliance on foreign labour and ensure British workers can secure good, well-paid jobs in the industries of tomorrow and drive growth and investment right across the country'. Monday's industrial strategy will be followed later in the week by a new trade plan intended to make the UK the best-connected country in the world to do business. The Prime Minister will launch the industrial strategy hoping it will help in his mission of delivering economic growth. The economy shrank by 0.3% in April, the biggest monthly contraction in gross domestic product for a year-and-a-half, as businesses felt the impact of global uncertainty caused by Donald Trump's tariffs and domestic pressure as a result of hikes to firms' national insurance contributions. Around one-in-seven young people are not in education or employment, and the number of people taking an apprenticeship has fallen by almost a fifth between 2016/17 and 2023/24. The Government hopes the growth sectors identified in the industrial strategy will create 1.1 million new jobs by 2035. The skills package includes capital investment from a £200 million fund which will support new facilities including 'technical excellence colleges' providing specialised training for local industries. The total funding is expected to train thousands more workers by 2029 including computer programmers, IT technicians, electrical and civil engineers.
