
Yoga day celebrations in educational institutions
Alagappa University, under the theme 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health,' celebrated 11th International Day of Yoga on Saturday.
The importance of celebrating International Yoga Day is to create an awareness about yoga among individuals across the world.
In his presidential address, G. Ravi, Vice-Chancellor, emphasised the holistic value of yoga highlighting that it nurtures not only the body but also sharpens the mind and enhances social harmony.
'Yoga is part of our ancient culture, dating back over 2,000 years. Practicing it daily for at least 20 to 50 minutes leads to peace of mind, productive work and community well-being,' he said.
He added that since 2016, the university has been offering yoga training to university fraternity and general public. In 2018, the university established the Centre for Yoga Education which offers B.Sc., Yoga Course.
Mepco Schlenk Matric Higher Secondary School commemorated the yoga day by practicing yoga and speaking about its importance.
A. Subash, one of the staff members, appealed to the students to practice yoga regularly for the betterment of physical and mental health.

Yoga brings healing touch to Nari Bandi Niketan inmates
1 2 Sambalpur: To improve the mental and physical well-being of inmates, Nari Bandi Niketan — the only women's prison in the state — has introduced weekly yoga sessions in collaboration with district health officials. Marking International Yoga Day , 30 women inmates took part in a special one-hour yoga and meditation session on the jail premises from 5:30 to 6:30am. Superintendent Runibala Dei said a yoga instructor also conducts daily sessions from 7 to 9 am, and every Friday, yoga inspector Dini Nayak offers a guided class to deepen the practice. "We have asked the yoga instructors to build rapport with the inmates and make the class an enjoyable activity to reduce stress among the prisoners," she added. To support holistic mental health, the prison also organises daily dance and music classes for inmates.

Mandya: Yoga brought global recognition to India, making the entire world turn its gaze towards this country, said deputy commissioner Kumara. Speaking at the 11th International Day of Yoga celebration held at the PET Cricket Ground here on Saturday, the DC said India is indeed the global guru of yoga and called upon the people to adopt yoga in their life before illness strikes.
