'I didn't recognise him at first'
'It was very tough because I was only 11 years old,' Zayed recalled. 'I remember when he was finally brought to the hospital after a month—I was dying to see him.
My mother said, 'Go say hi.' There were two beds in the ICU, both with burn victims. I passed the first bed thinking he was in the second, and suddenly, from behind, a hand raised and called out, 'Zayed.''
What followed was a moment etched in Zayed's memory forever. 'At first, I didn't recognize him. His head was swollen like a football, his skin literally melting into the sheets. He hadn't even seen himself in the mirror yet.
He held my hand and asked, 'Zayed, are you scared?' I couldn't say a word. Then he said something impossible in that moment—'Before you know it, I'll build a better hospital than this so that people like me don't have to come here… and you don't have to see me like this.
I'll make Tipu Sultan again, and we'll have a great time together, my son.''
Zayed said that while the doctors had given up hope, his father's inner strength defied all odds.
'He was made of steel—his soul and heart were something else entirely.'
A triumphant return after 74 surgeries
Two years later, Sanjay Khan proved the doubters wrong. 'He got back on a horse after undergoing 74 surgeries,' Zayed revealed. 'He completed Tipu Sultan, and then took me to Bangalore. He bought land there, handed me the first brick—the foundation brick—and asked me to name it. I named it Golden Palms. And later, he built a hotel there.'
On the work front, Zayed Khan is currently gearing up for a comeback with the OTT film The Film That Never Was.

I used to have her picture in the locker room. When I heard the script of the film and learned that Aishwarya is in the film, I quickly asked where do I sign on. I had a wonderful experience working with her.' He added, 'She really knows how to play with you. There are actors who take time to come on set and there is drama and actual work is suffering, that's the worst situation to be in. But with Aishwarya, I thought it would be tough to break my fan moment, but she so naturally just said 'hi' and asked me if I want to do rehearsals first. She is so beautiful, it's like porcelain, it's not possible. Today people do filters and all, but she had a natural filter.' Zayed's career in the film industry was relatively short-lived. Despite starring in various high-profile projects, his career took a downturn after the failure of the 2009 film Blue. He was last seen on the big screen in 2015's Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene.

We got better cars again once we came out of the situation." You know what? That's what a modern family is all about, man, right now. Look at where you're living. You're not living in Dalhousie, for heaven's sake. You're living in Mumbai. Look at the people that you're interacting with, the kind of jobs that you're doing—this and that. I mean, there are so many variables at play right now. So many variables. So when there's something emotional, which is the highest point, yes, there are sounding boards. We all are each others sounding boards. We love to say what other people can't. Simple as that. Your best friend also won't be able to say it. Your brother, your sister will say it. Your father, your mother will say it. And it's the ugly truth. And hear it. Okay, man, now you know. Now you're making a known decision. You're making an informed decision.' Recalling a tough moment, he shared: 'They said to me that I haven't even given 20% to my career,' he admitted, adding how he responded, 'That y'all have too many opinions. I mean, I have to say, when we're at the dining table, everybody has a very strong personality. So, you know, to get across, 'I'm right, I'm the best, I know it all', it's a tough battle between everybody.' Zayed also spoke about how both Sussanne and Farah have maintained amicable relationships with their ex-partners, Hrithik Roshan and DJ Aqeel, respectively. According to him, it all comes down to shared values and emotional maturity: 'If you take everything else out of the equation, what's the most important thing that you have with your partner? Trust. Understanding. And compatibility, in some sort of way. If you haven't taken that and put it on a higher pedestal than everything else, then there's something just blatantly wrong. I mean, did you get married for fame? Did you get married for money? If you got married for all of these things, then you're bound to have massive, massive problems, especially at the time of a divorce. But if you met your soulmate, right? You married your soulmate. Okay. And things went on. Water went under the bridge. Your soulmate is still there.' He continued: 'I don't know about everybody else. But for us, we are highly evolved in understanding such situations. And quite honestly, I don't care what anybody else thinks. We are. We are happy that everybody is happy. We were a good family. We have children to look forward to. We've got so many better things to look forward to than all this' When asked about Sussanne's current partner, Arsalan, Zayed had only positive things to say: 'He's a cool kid, man. I think he's a sweetheart guy. He's full of life and energy. He's always smiling and happy, and he wants to do fun things. Yeah, man. He's good. Of course, he's younger to me, but he's good.'
