Govt selects 15 places for agri-tourism devpt
Bhubaneswar: State govt has identified 15 priority destinations for integrated rural tourism development under its Vision 2036 framework, marking a significant shift towards agriculture-based tourism.
The initiative, jointly launched by the tourism and agriculture and farmers' empowerment departments, aims to create a diverse range of experiences for tourists. Visitors can participate in hands-on agricultural activities, explore nature trails, witness creation of handicrafts and savour local cuisine prepared from farm-fresh ingredients.
The selected destinations are the tribal heartland of Koraput, crafts village of Raghurajpur, silk cluster of Gopalpur, organic farming hub of Kandhamal, coffee plantations of Daringbadi, pastoral landscapes of Bargarh, heritage village of Hirapur, mango orchards of Dhenkanal, rice fields of Sambalpur, spice gardens of Phulbani, palm groves of Puri, vegetable farms of Kendrapada, betel vine gardens of Jagatsinghpur, mushroom cultivation centres of Mayurbhanj, and traditional fishing villages of Chilika.
"The initiative will not only enhance tourism offerings but also create additional income opportunities for our farming communities and transform rural women from passive participants to active stakeholders in the tourism economy," said deputy chief minister Pravati Parida, who also holds the tourism portfolio. The programme is supported under the Mukhyamantri Krushi Udyog Yojana (MKUY), which will provide capital subsidies and training to agro-tourism entrepreneurs.
State govt is particularly focusing on involving women self-help groups and youth entrepreneurs in the rural tourism initiative, ensuring that the benefits reach the grassroots level while preserving local culture and traditions.

can showcase their traditional skills while generating sustainable income," said deputy CM K V Singh Deo, who holds the agriculture portfolio.
The implementation will begin immediately, with the first phase of SHG members' training scheduled to commence next month, official sources said.

BHUBANESWAR: A sudden travel advisory by the United States flagging security concerns in parts of Odisha and urging its citizens to be highly cautious while travelling has sparked an outrage in the state. Odisha is among 14 states where the US has advised its citizens to reconsider their travel plans. Reacting sharply to the development, deputy chief minister and Tourism minister Pravati Parida said Odisha is a peaceful state and the advisory was unwarranted. However, such an advisory would have no impact on tourism as very few travellers from the US visit the state. 'The state attracts more tourists from Europe, Arabian and middle east countries and Australia besides the Asia, mostly from East, South and South-East Asia. However, the Ministry of External Affairs will take up the matter with the US counterparts,' Parida, who is also the Women and Child Development minister, told TNIE. Minister for Science and Technology Krushna Chandra Patra also said Odisha is among the safest states in the country and any crime here is dealt with iron hand. Countering the grounds on which the US issued the advisory, he said, 'Is there no violence in America? The country too reports riots and mass shootings. Wasn't there an attack on Trump and the White House? How can they judge us and on what basis?'

Dy CM KV Singh Deo meets ex-UK PM Tony Blair, signs pact on sustainable energy solutions
BHUBANESWAR: Deputy chief minister KV Singh Deo on Thursday met former prime minister of the United Kingdom and executive chairman of Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI), Tony Blair, in New Delhi and discussed collaborations for implementing sustainable energy solutions in Odisha. The state government signed a tripartite letter of intent (LoI) with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and TBI. As per the LoI, Odisha will take the leadership for setting up a community of practice for energy ministers from various states of India. A conference of energy ministers of all the states is scheduled to be held in Odisha later this year. Praising Odisha for pioneering reforms in the electricity sector, Blair said the state has attracted significant investments in renewable energy in the last one year. He also noted that Odisha faces typical challenges because of mineral-based industries and thermal power plants, and expressed readiness for continued collaboration with the state to accelerate sustainable energy solutions. Singh Deo reiterated Odisha's commitment to a low carbon future and achieving net zero. The state will adopt a strategic approach aligned to best international standards, he said. The issue of distress migration, particularly from the western parts of Odisha was also discussed in the meeting. The TBI has supported the state government in formulating the artificial intelligence (AI) policy which has recently been approved by the cabinet. Country director of TBI, Vivek Agarwal, dean IIT-Kanpur Prof Sachidanand Tripathy and additional secretary in Energy department Debidutta Tripathy signed the agreement.
