The New OceanGate Documentary Dives Into the Depths of the Titan Submersible Tragedy
Two years ago, OceanGate's Titan submersible imploded in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland. Now, amid ongoing investigations by the U.S. Coast Guard, Netflix has a new documentary that proposes—citing sound evidence and on-camera interviews with sources that were formerly close to OceanGate—just what went wrong on the ill-fated journey to the site of another prolific sea disaster, RMS Titanic. Much of it has to do with OceanGate's eccentric late CEO, Stockton Rush, one of the five victims of the 2023 incident.
On June 11, Netflix released the documentary Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster, which documents the circumstances behind the June 2023 incident that spawned countless memes and endless speculation. While the movie dives deep (ahem) into the specifics of the Titan's implosion, including pointing out the submersible's carbon fiber construction that was vulnerable to deep-sea water pressure, the movie points a finger at Rush, who is described by subjects in the movie as "arrogant" with a major "temper."
"I worked for somebody that is probably borderline clinical psychopath. Definitely a narcissist," said Tony Nissen, a former engineering director at OceanGate in the movie. "How do you manage a person like that who owns the company?"
In the movie, Stockton Rush is described as having a "privileged background" originating from generational wealth; his family tree includes two signers of the Declaration of Independence. Subjects in the film recall Rush hoping to fashion himself as a billionaire explorer like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, with his eyes set on Earth's oceans instead of Mars. "Big swinging dicks" was a term Rush liked to say out loud and often, and being a "big swinging dick" himself was an explicit goal. (Rush was not a billionaire, but he had money to burn nonetheless.)
Joseph Assi, a videographer hired by Rush to capture OceanGate's expeditions, says that one of Rush's personal philosophies was that "accessibility is ownership." As Assi says in the documentary: "If there's a small island in the middle of the ocean, and you're the only one you can access it, it doesn't matter who owns it, you have ownership over it because you have the accessibility to get to it. And he truly believed in that."
Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster makes a belabored point that OceanGate's failings leading to the implosion stemmed from Rush's leadership. His short temper and arrogance permeated in all his efforts to build a business around deep-sea commercial tourism. This included trying to skip critical testing conducted by third parties—which is standard practice in the industry—and cutting costs where possible, such as in the aforementioned use of carbon fiber materials which cannot sustain oceanic pressure. Rush also verbally stated he could and would "buy a congressman," which alarmed many OceanGate employees.
Rob McCallum, a consultant, recalls in the documentary: "Stockton said that he decided that he saw no need for classification, for third-party oversight. I stood up and said, 'I'm sorry I can't be part of this conversation, nor can I be associated with OceanGate or this vehicle in any way.' And I left. He had every contact in the submersible industry telling him not to do this. But once you start down the path of doing it entirely yourself, and you realize you've taken the wrong turn right back at the beginning... You have to admit you were wrong. That's a big pill to swallow."
Rush is also described as having a callous attitude towards employees, refusing to take accountability for his failures. For example: In 2016, Rush and OceanGate hosted an expedition to the SS Andrea Doria. The trip nearly ended in disaster after Rush brought their sub into a dangerous spot; David Lochridge, OceanGate's Director of Marine Ops and a more experienced pilot, took over controls and got everyone aboard safely to the surface.
Though Rush thanked Lochridge, the CEO turned cold towards him, later excluding him from important communications. Rush eventually fired Lochridge, in a tense meeting heard in the movie via audio recording. Later, Rush suggested promoting another OceanGate employee, Bonnie Carl, to take over Lochridge as the next lead pilot. But Carl was an accountant who headed the HR department, and had no experience as a submersible pilot.
Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster is a cut above typical straight-from-the-headlines Netflix documentaries, as a level-headed if straightforward deep dive (again, ahem) about a disaster that dominated the news cycle two summers ago. But while the ins and outs of a deadly trip into the sea have morbid appeal, it's the movie's interrogation of one man's toxic hubris that makes Titan a worthy watch.

The second and final season of Arcane is poised to shake up the 2025 Emmys. There are 38 submissions this year in the Best Animated Program category, which means there will again be five nominees. The comedy about the denizens of Springfield most recently prevailed in 2023 for "Treehouse of Horror XXXIII," but was beaten last year by Blue Eye Samurai, which is not currently in the running. This time around, the season premiere, "Bart's Birthday," is being entered for Emmy consideration, which serves a meta take on the show's eventual series finale. Love, Death + Robots has a near-perfect track record at the Emmys, winning 13 of its 15 nominations through the years. It won Best Short Form Animated Program for each of its first three seasons in 2019, 2021, and 2022, but is now competing against the big dogs up in the main Best Animated Program race. (There is no short form animation category this year, possibly due to a dearth of eligible submissions.) Season 4 of the anthology series streamed all 10 episodes on May 15, right at the tail end of the eligibility period. The third episode, "Spider Rose," has been submitted, and focuses on a grieving woman hellbent on revenge at the end of the galaxy. In fourth place is Bob's Burgers, a 13-time nominee in this category and two-time winner (2014 and 2017). Season 15 was split into two parts, with the first part airing at the end of 2024 and the second part airing now and through the summer. The eighth episode, "They Slug Horses, Don't They?," is being put forward for Emmy consideration, in which Tina and Louise get into an argument that escalates across several increasingly graphic "apology" cards. Invincible comes in fifth place for a nomination. Emmy voters will be judging the sixth episode of Season 3, "All I Can Say Is I'm Sorry," where a powerful new figure challenges Markus "Mark" Grayson/Invincible (voiced by Steven Yeun), and helps him to explore the concept of right vs. wrong. The superhero series streams on Prime Video, and received its first Emmy nomination last year for Sterling K. Brown for voicing Angstrom Levy. Days of Our Lives Recap: Xander and Sarah Clash Over Victoria originally appeared on Daytime Confidential. On today's Days of Our Lives recap: Titan/DiMera: Stephanie arrives to see Alex. She wants to see if he can head out, but Alex says he has to cover with both Xander and Philip out. He promises they will soon make up for lost time. The couple begin to make out and he leans her over the desk. As they are about to go full press, Kate arrives, and Stephanie makes a quick exit. Kate tells Alex what she walked in on could have been a page out of 'One Stormy Night.' She admits she is loving the book but has misplaced it. He can't imagine what he's going to tell the author. Kate apologizes and says she's been distracted with Philip and John. Alex understands and Kate goes on to say how worried she is someone will take the manuscript and use it as their own. Kate promises to keep looking and Alex says the job offer is still open to her. She says she still has to decline the offer because she couldn't possibly work for Xander. Kiriakis Mansion: Maggie and Sarah are sipping tea and discussing John's funeral. Maggie says dying a hero was fitting for him as it's the way he lived. Maggie remembers Sarah being hit by the car the year before and how John's intuition told him Brady was always innocent (Can we please get Xander's mother back?). Sarah talks a bit about Xander and feels so foolish to have believed he had changed (I don't like the Xander is to blame narrative here). Sarah says she loves Xander but realizes love might not be enough. She can't believe she wasted time feeling so guilty for keeping the secret when Xander did exactly what she thought he would (Again, that doesn't mean you are free and clear Miss Sarah). She talks a bit about their last confrontation and Maggie thinks Xander is trying to blame Sarah for something he has already done. Sarah worries as Xander wants to see Victoria. She knows he would never hurt her nor Victoria but is concerned she'll get sucked back into his orbit. Sarah considers taking Victoria and going on the run. Maggie begs Sarah to be careful. She knows Xander is likely to go to prison, but a judge can rule on a custody battle in all kinds of different ways. Knowing Xander would never hurt Victoria, why in the world would Sarah ever consider going on the run. Horton Square: Xander has bought a dress for Victoria when EJ walks up to give him the business about the hospital vote. Xander tells him to piss off and walks away. Salem PD: Jada and Belle discuss John. Belle says she needs to be distracted and wants to get back to work on Philip and EJ's cases. Jada can't believe Xander was granted bail. Belle says she is deadest on prosecuting him. Shawn Douglas arrives and tells Belle he's there to support her. She has no time and quickly exits. Jada inquires and he says they are just awkward around each other. She says she is sorry for his loss and asks what's up. Shawn D apologizes for lying about being sick the other day. Jada admits she knows the entire story and is thrilled Bo is on the mend. Shawn D is thrilled as well but is devastated by John's passing. He starts to go into the details of the mission, but she stops him, so she has plausible deniability. University Hospital – Philip's Room: Kayla enters, and Kate asks about John's wake. Kayla says it was a perfect celebration of John's life. Kate says she would have been there but needed to be near Philip. Kayla understands and says his labs show much improvement. Kate doesn't want to leave as she fears her son's life is still in danger. She can't wait for him to wake up so he can identify Xander as his attacker. Kate mentions her misplaced manuscript and says she hates she can't read more to him, even though it's somewhat inappropriate. Kate begs her son to wake up so they can catch up. She kisses him on the forehead and exits the room. Brady Pub: Outside, Xander runs into Kayla. She goes off on him and Xander assumes Sarah has poisoned the water. Kayla is furious that his inability to control his anger may have ruined his life for good. With that, she storms off. Xander is sitting on the bench when Sarah calls asking him to meet up. Horton Square: Belle is chatting with Claire about her grandpa John's funeral. She says she is going to wrap up some cases and pay her and Theo a visit. She hangs up but then spots EJ and pretends to still be talking. Just then, EJ walks up and catches her in the midst of pretending. He asks her to be honest if she doesn't want to see him. Belle says she doesn't know if she can deal with their relationship at this point in time. EJ understands but wishes he could be there to support her. With that, he exits. Shawn Douglas walks up and finds Belle alone and asks to talk. He says he just spoke with Claire Bear and learned she is headed soon to South Africa. They agree they could be trusted to visit their daughter at the same time. University Hospital – Lobby: Kayla walks in and doesn't realize the manuscript is on the desk. Jus then, Stephanie arrives to talk to her mother. She asks about her father and closing down Black Patch. Kayla says she is just as concerned but selfishly wants him to lead a safer existence. Stephanie asks if she could host a special dinner to celebrate her father to life his spirits. Kayla thinks it's a great idea and Stephanie makes her exit. Kiriakis Mansion: Xander arrives and wants to talk about Victoria. Sarah says she won't even consider joint custody. He asks what she's considering, and Sarah says he can have supervised visitation at the mansion. She says she will agree to her terms or do nothing and Xander agrees. Xander wants to go upstairs to see his daughter but Sarah gets all kinds of shouty and says she makes the rules now because he tried to kill his brother (Again, this narrative drives me insane). Xander says Sarah is responsible for setting the tone for everything that's happening now. Sarah counters his violent tendencies will be responsible for him missing his daughter's formative years (Ugh). Stephanie's Place: Stephanie arrives home and asks Jada if she's willing to attend a dinner for her father and his retirement. Jada agrees and just then Alex arrives. He begins to undress before he sees Jada behind him. She decides to run an errand and says she will meet up with them at The Bistro later in the evening. University Hospital – Kayla's Office: EJ arrives to see Kayla. He says how much he is looking forward to working together. They go back and forth, and Kayla reluctantly agrees to work with the hospital's new owner. Endings Kayla tells EJ about Bo's miraculous recovery via Versavix. Ej admits to being excited about the money-making potential but also wants to make sure the hospital survives. With that, he presents her with a plan, including changes, that will help the institution move forward. Stephanie tells Alex about the upcoming dinner/celebration for her father, after which they can celebrate. Belle tells Shawn Douglas she is confused about her feelings. He admits he is confused as well. Shawn D says he wants to support Belle in whatever way he can. She gets it and knows she dan count on him. With that, they embrace… just as EJ arrives on the scene. Sarah tells Maggie how much she hates Xander even though she really loves him. Xander arrives in Philip's hospital room… Kate tells Roman she will be home soon. Charlie from 'Love Island USA' on Hannah and Pepe: 'How can I watch that?'
"Love Island USA" Season 7's Charlie Georgiou says the women were too loyal to Huda to vote her out of the villa, calling himself an "easy target." Charlie Georgiou is still reeling from being dumped by his fellow "Love Island USA" cast members. "It's savage; it's brutal," he tells USA TODAY. Since his villa roommates voted to oust him over the controversial Huda Mustafa and Taylor Williams, Charlie has been in a Fiji hotel room watching Netflix — and also catching up on the dozen Season 7 episodes in which the actor/model appeared. But the season's first male bombshell isn't eager to follow the most recent episodes, in which the woman he'd hit it off with, Hannah Fields, is happily moving on with Pepe Garcia-Gonzalez a day after uncontrollably sobbing over Charlie's departure. "When I was watching the episode of my departure, I saw that the next day, obviously they sent Pepe and Hannah and all the new couples on dates. And I was like, 'I can't watch that, man.' How can I watch that?" Charlie says. "Any human being wouldn't want to watch someone that they've just been establishing connections with go off and get to have this intimate experience with someone else." He adds, "Yeah, I don't want to watch the (newer) episodes. It's not a nice feeling. ... I'm just a bit worried I'll see something that makes me feel a bit (bad)." Charlie says he was the 'easy target'; the women 'weren't about to dump' Huda In Episode 12, viewers for the first time had their say in who couples up. When Hannah was paired with Pepe, Charlie was left on the chopping block alongside Taylor and Huda. Chelley, Cierra and Amaya's votes sealed Charlie's fate. This "disappointed" Charlie, who'd thought he had formed better friendships with the women. "Amaya, I always looked out for her. She cried in front of me. Me and Hannah looked after her and made her feel better, and she confided in us and we consoled her," Charlie says. "So for her to be the final executor of my time there ... the irony of it. I was like, 'No way, man, I can't believe it's you that's done it." As for Cierra, her vote to dump Charlie "let me down because ... we went in this game together. We went into the villa together. We'd have one-on-one conversations and check in on each other. He'd hoped he would sway his fellow islanders by giving his "last-ditch effort" pitch that he and Hannah had just found a new lease on their budding love. "And even that wasn't enough," Charlie says. "So I think I was always going to be the easy target." The women's loyalty to each other was the nail in the coffin, Charlie believes. "I just feel like the girls weren't about to dump (Huda)," he says. "They're not going to dump their girlfriend that they're upstairs with. They're watching her cry. They're not going to do that. They're going to go for me."
