Kuala Lumpur: A delivery driver has been sentenced to one year in prison by the magistrates' court for conspiring with an accomplice to defraud a bank into approving a micro loan to purchase a phone. Magistrate Illi Marisqa Khalizan also sentenced Salman Abdullah to one stroke of the rotan after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 420 of the Penal Code involving cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property.

The offence took place on Feb 1 at the bank's Jalan Peel branch, where Salman conspired with a 32-year-old woman to deceive a bank officer into approving a loan for RM8,329 for the purchase of an iPhone 16 Pro. Salman admitted to submitting falsified identity card details and forged payslips as supporting documents. Earlier, lawyer Edwin Tomas from the National Legal Aid Foundation told the court that Salman was remorseful of his action.

Retiree's RM535k gone in Facebook 'investment' scam
JOHOR BARU: – A private sector retiree lost RM535,766 after allegedly falling victim to an online investment scam promoted via a Facebook advertisement. Seri Alam police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said police received a report from a 57-year-old local man on Tuesday, who claimed losses exceeding RM500,000. He said the victim had come across a share investment advertisement on Facebook on March 13 that promised lucrative returns within a short time, and clicked on the provided link out of interest. "Subsequently, the victim made 26 payment transactions into five different bank accounts between March 13 and June 5, totalling RM535,766. The victim was also asked to make additional payments to withdraw the so-called 'investment profits', but those requests were never fulfilled," he said in a statement yesterday. Mohd Sohaimi said the victim only realised he had been duped after repeated attempts to recover the investment funds proved futile. "Preliminary checks via the CCID's 'Semak Mule' platform found that all five accounts involved had a total of 22 police reports linked to investment scams," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and police are also looking into the possible involvement of mule account holders.

Armed men on motorbikes kill 34 Niger soldiers, ministry says
NIAMEY (Reuters) -Several hundred armed men, many on motorbikes, attacked a Niger army base near the border with Mali, leaving at least 34 soldiers dead and 14 wounded, the Defence Ministry said. The attackers - described as "mercenaries" by the ministry - used eight vehicles and more than 200 motorbikes in the raid on the base in Bani-bangou on Thursday, according to the statement read out on state TV. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack on the army base in a statement on its Telegram channel on Friday. Niger, like other countries in West Africa's Sahel region, is battling Islamist militants linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State. Troops carried out aerial and ground search operations to secure the area after the attack, the ministry said without going into more detail on the assault. 12-year-old disabled girl rescued after car theft in Penang
BUTTERWORTH: A 12-year-old disabled girl was rescued unharmed in Butterworth after the vehicle she was left in was stolen from her father's workshop in Penaga late yesterday afternoon. Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abd Rahman said the incident occurred at about 5.30pm, when the girl's mother briefly exited the car to deliver engine oil to her husband's workshop. He said the vehicle's engine had been left running with the child inside. "Upon returning, the mother was shocked to find the car and her daughter gone. "A search was immediately launched by the family with help from a friend. "Unable to locate the vehicle, the mother used the Life360 app to track her mobile phone, which was with the girl, and traced the location to Bagan Lalang, Butterworth. "Police from the district's Criminal Investigation Department, assisted by officers from the Butterworth police station, responded swiftly and successfully apprehended a male suspect in his 60s," he said in a statement at midnight today. Anuar said, fortunately, the girl was found safe and uninjured. "She was immediately brought to Kepala Batas Hospital for a thorough medical examination," he said. Anuar said preliminary checks revealed the suspect had a record of seven criminal offences and eleven drug-related offences. The case is being investigated under Section 379A (theft of a motor vehicle) and Section 363 (kidnapping) of the Penal Code. Authorities are continuing their investigation to complete the case file.
