MBBS, BDS application forms to be available from June 6
Application forms for admission to state quota seats in MBBS and BDS programmes will open up on June 6, Health Minister M. Subramanian announced on Wednesday.
The Minister held a consultation with the heads of private and government medical and dental colleges. The admission process would commence early to enable scrutiny of the applications diligently. In the previous years the government had waited until the declaration of NEET and as a result there was not much time to scrutinise the applications, resulting in errors, he explained.
Candidates must include their NEET registration number while filling in the applications. The final merit list will, however, be based on the results provided by the National Testing Agency. Candidates have been given the opportunity to wait till the declaration of NEET results. Such candidates must apply within five days of declaration of NEET results, the medical education has decided.
Mr. Subramanian has instructed private medical and dental colleges to be transparent about the fee structure, giving a break up of the various components, such as tuition and hostel fees and any other amount that is being collected.
Earlier in the day the Minister launched training programmes for health care workers. There is no reason to panic over COVID 19 infection, health minister M. Subramanian said here on Wednesday. Until Tuesday 216 persons have been diagnosed with COVID-19 infection and they are getting better. Those who have been infected are being monitored, the minister said. To remain safe people have been advised to wear masks in crowded places to avoid contracting infections.
A person who has been diagnosed with COVID 19 infection and dies is tested for various other parameters as well to identify the cause of death. 'We do all the investigations including for COVID 19. The person may have died of other underlying causes and COVID 19 infection may have been an incidental finding,' health department officials said at a media briefing here on Wednesday on the sidelines of launch of training programme for health workers in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and fatty liver disease.
The field workers will raise awareness about the diseases and those who have them would be urged to get screened at primary health centres. The health department has also planned to launch 'Nalam Kakkum Stalin' in a fortnight in Chennai, the Minister announced.
Under the scheme people can seek master health check-ups nearer to home. At the camps people can also get the required persons with disabilities certificates, persons can also get their cards under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. Across the state 1,256 camps will be held by December-end.

Congress names 40 district, city unit chiefs for Gujarat
After a process that lasted more than two months and saw senior Congress leaders visit 26 Lok Sabha constituencies, 182 Assembly segments, and 235 Blocks, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Saturday appointed 40 chiefs of district and city units for Gujarat under the the 'Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan' — a pilot project intended to empower the district units. The list saw only one woman leader, Sonal Patel, who will head the Ahmedabad City unit. Patel, a former vice president of the Congress Mahila Morcha was the candidate against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the 2024 LS polls from Gandhinagar constituency. She replaces former mayor and ex-MLA Himmatsinh Patel. 'Ahmedabad city president is a position that carries a lot of weight,' said a Congress leader. At least five of the DCC presidents were repeated — Rutvij Joshi (Vadodara city), Jashpalsinh Padhiyar (Vadodara district), Naushad Solanki (Surendranagar), Pratap Dudhat (Amreli), and Rajendrasinh Rana (Bharuch city). The party said the newly appointed DCC chiefs 'represent Gujarat's social and regional diversity and have been chosen for their grassroots connection, ideological clarity, and organisational ability'. At the AICC Session on April 9-10 in Gujarat, held in the state for the first time in about 60 years, district units were identified as key building blocks to build the Congress back-up. While this is a nationwide project, the Congress launched the pilot from Gujarat, a state where the party has been out of power now for 30 years and which is identified most closely with the BJP's rise post-Modi. The party on April 12 appointed 43 AICC and 183 PCC observers comprising senior leaders, including state in-charges, MPs, MLAs, and former PCC presidents, to oversee the appointments and make recommendations to the party high command. Health department will start siddha fertility clinic, says min Ma Su
Chennai: The health department will start fertility clinics under the department of Indian medicine on a pilot basis, similar to allopathic fertility clinics, at the Govt Siddha Hospital in Chennai, health minister Ma Subramanian said on Saturday. The minister, who took part in a yoga demonstration as part of International Yoga Day, said the state started three allopathic fertility clinics — one each in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Salem — recognizing the increasing prevalence of infertility and the need for improved access to affordable and high-quality fertility care, as well as further research into the underlying causes and effective prevention strategies. "I read an article by a doctor from this institution who said textbooks of siddha medicine, written centuries ago, prescribe drugs to solve infertility. We will soon start a siddha clinic for fertility on this campus," he said. The state is also working on legislation to set up a siddha university at Madhavaram. The Tamil Nadu Siddha Medical University Bill, 2022, which was tabled in the state legislative assembly, was earlier withdrawn. The govt said it will undertake fresh legislation in tune with the provisions contained in the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Act. In 2021-2022, the govt announced it would establish a separate siddha university. A bill passed by the Tamil Nadu assembly on April 28, 2022, was sent for the Governor's assent, but it was sent from Raj Bhavan for the assent of the President. The Centre said certain provisions of the Tamil Nadu Siddha Medical University Bill, 2022, are not in accordance with the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Act, 2020. "We will place the new bill in the coming assembly session," Subramanian said. Tamil Nadu is the only state where there are govt-run colleges for five streams of Indian medicine and homeopathy. The govt will fill doctor vacancies in this stream soon.

Four test positive for Covid-19
Four men tested positive for Covid-19 in the city on Saturday. The new cases include an 85-year-old from Telibagh, a 38-year-old, a 58-year-old from Mohanlalganj, and a 19-year-old from Chowk. With these additions, the total number of Covid-positive patients reported in the district reached 66, of which 35 are currently active.
