Sime Darby Property ups minimum wage for B40 workers by 80pct to RM2,700
PETALING JAYA: Sime Darby Property Bhd has raised the minimum living wage for employees in the B40 income group by 80 per cent, from RM1,500 to RM2,700 a month, as part of its commitment to employee well-being and inclusive growth.
Its chairman Datuk Rizal Rickman Ramli said the adjustment takes into account the increased cost of living and aims to provide better financial support for lower-income employees.
"This initiative highlights our commitment to financial stability and the well-being of our workforce, particularly those most impacted by rising living costs," he said in the group's integrated annual report 2024.
The wage hike is part of Sime Darby Property's wider workforce development efforts under its SHIFT25 transformation plan.
In 2024, the company recorded a 43 per cent increase in employee training hours and introduced new programmes in areas such as artificial intelligence, sustainable development and urban biodiversity.
Rizal said these measures come as the group looks to upskill its workforce in line with evolving industry demands and growing environmental, social and governance expectations.
Sime Darby Property's new minimum wage of RM2,700 exceeds the national statutory floor by RM1,000.
Under the government's revised minimum wage policy, the monthly wage floor was raised to RM1,700 beginning February this year for employers with five or more workers. Companies with fewer than five employees have until August to comply.
Non-compliance is an offence under the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011 (Act 732) and may result in penalties.
The new national rate, announced in Budget 2025, is expected to benefit over 4.3 million workers across the country.

But The Wall Street Journal is reporting that, according to the company, Alabama will be one of three states where the phones will be made. A spokesman for the Trump Organization told the Journal that 'manufacturing for the new phone will be in Alabama, California and Florida.' The Trump Organization did not respond to a request from for more information. Eric Trump did say Monday that the first wave of phones wouldn't be built in the US. 'You can build these phones in the United States,' he told podcaster Benny Johnson. 'Eventually, all the phones can be built in the United States of America. We have to bring manufacturing back here.' The Journal is a bit sceptical that any American-made cellphone will show up soon. Earlier this year, the newspaper quizzed supply-chain experts on how quickly a completely US-made phone on the order of the iPhone could appear. They projected years and a multi-billion dollar commitment to build the infrastructure necessary, which would result in a phone more expensive than the iPhones made in China. The Journal's deputy tech editor Wilson Rothman said in the Journal's 'Tech News Podcast' that there are currently phones that resemble the specs of the T1 phone at this price point that are made in China. 'The thing about manufacturing phones in America is you have to have an infrastructure,' Rothman said. 'You have to have a workforce. You have to have things that you can't just snap your fingers or even throw US$500bil (RM2.13 trillion) at. It's not a problem that can be solved just with money. It really is a decades-in-the works kind of project.' Regardless, Rothman said the Trump phone could do well in capitalising 'on the frustration of people (with) their wireless plans.' And despite being advertised as an American-made phone, 'it is likely that this device will be initially produced by a Chinese (original design manufacturer),' Counterpoint Research analyst Blake Przesmicki wrote in a June 16 note, according to Variety . 'Max Weinbach, an analyst at research firm Creative Strategies, in a post on X, said the T1 Phone is likely being made by Wingtech, which is owned by Chinese company Luxshare. 'Same device as the T-Mobile REVVL 7 Pro 5G, custom body,' Weinbach wrote in the post, Variety reprted. 'Wingtech, now owned byLuxshare, makes it in Jiaxing, Wuxi, or Kunming China.' – News Service

Retiree loses over RM530,000 to Facebook investment scam
JOHOR BAHRU: A private sector retiree lost RM535,766 after allegedly falling victim to an online investment scam promoted via an advertisement on the Facebook application. Seri Alam District Police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the police received a report from a 57-year-old local man on Tuesday, who claimed losses exceeding RM500,000. He said the victim had come across a share investment advertisement on Facebook on March 13 that promised lucrative returns within a short time, and clicked on the provided link out of interest. 'Subsequently, the victim made 26 payment transactions into five different bank accounts between March 13 and June 5, totalling RM535,766. The victim was also asked to make additional payments to withdraw the so-called 'investment profits', but those requests were never fulfilled,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Sohaimi said the victim only realised he had been duped after repeated attempts to recover the investment funds proved futile. 'Preliminary checks via the CCID's 'Semak Mule' platform found that all five accounts involved had a total of 22 police reports linked to investment scams,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and police are also looking into the possible involvement of mule account holders.

Gurdwara Sahib Miri gets RM500,000 Unifor boost for renovation works

MIRI (June 21): Gurdwara Sahib Miri has received an allocation of RM500,000 from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to support its ongoing renovation works. The cheque was handed over by State Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting during a brief ceremony at the temple yesterday. In his remarks, the Piasau assemblyman also reminded recipients to utilise the allocation without delay and to ensure that all costs and expenditures would be properly documented. 'Make sure to use the funds and report what has been done, so there is a proper record. 'If everything is in order, it will be easier for them (Unifor) to consider future applications,' he advised. The Sikh community in Miri has roots dating back to the 1880s, with the original 'gurdwara' (Sikh temple) built in 1919, and the current building completed in 1975. Today, it continues to serve as a place of worship and learning for the Sikh families in the area. According to the project director Gurvir Singh Sandhu, the current upgrading initiative was approved in 2021, with physical works kicking off in 2022. 'The renovation works are now about 80 per cent complete and are expected to finish by early July,' said Gurvir. Among the new features being introduced are Dayak-inspired motifs on the glass panels by the entrance, reflecting the community's appreciation for local cultures and Sarawak's multi-ethnic landscape. Ting also noted that the Sikh community here had received a total of RM2.6 million in Unifor funding over the years for various phases of upgrading works on the temple. 'In recent years, the temple has undergone various improvements including upgrades to the 'langar' hall, kitchen facilities, and space expansion to accommodate major religious events.'
